It's funny how every 14 year old in the world understood Ace Ventura but professional critics didn't "get it" until he was a massive star.
@Cujobob4 ай бұрын
Critics are trying to be objective and to enjoy these films, you have to take off the reviewer hat and just enjoy yourself. Slapstick comedy is so tricky. Myself, I love Ace Ventura and loved The Mask when I was younger, but Dumb & Dumber was always too cringe for me.

@christhornycroft3686 Жыл бұрын
@@seanchukwuezi3079obody had seen a performance like Carrey’s before in Ace Ventura. Jerry Lewis’ Nutty Professor comes close, but in terms of physical comedy, even the 3 Stooges doesn’t reach Ace Ventura levels. So it was a kind of comedy they weren’t used to and older people, especially older guys, like what’s familiar. They say they want something new, different and interesting, but in reality, they just want a lot of the kind of thing they grew up with - the stuff that got them into movies. When you hit 40, “they don’t make movies the way they used to” is one of the lines that is constantly on the tip of your tongue. I’ve gotten that way already, but there are some new things I enjoy. But these guys had the old man affliction early on. If something reminded them of their childhood or had eye candy in Ebert’s case, it was most likely good in their eyes.

“Ambitious fantasy.” Funny, we call it “reality TV” today and that really got going literally a year or 2 after this in America, so this movie was prophetic. I think Eternal Sunshine and The Majestic are better movies, but Truman Show is an excellent film and all 3 still hold up in 2023, perhaps better than they did upon release. The fact that Jim has never been nominated for an Academy Award is highway robbery. Robin Williams started his career as a goofy, over the top alien in Mork and Mindy and he got his first nomination in 1987. He ended up with 3 and 1 win. Jim has proven he’s in that league.

Ebert was often way off. Carrey’s role in “The Cable Guy” was not a more serious one, but a darker one. Truman was pure or in a critic’s mind, “serious”.

Media critics are pointless. Just say whatever you want: if you're right, people listen. If you're wrong, you just backpedal or ignore it and nearly everyone forgets within moments.
@zxbc12 жыл бұрын
That's not even remotely close to how critics behave. Most critics don't backpedal on unpopular opinions. S&E also almost never change their minds. The only times I can remember them changing their opinions are on a very few masterpieces where their initial assessments were too extremely negative. They have reviewed thousands and thousands of films and they have "backpedaled" on less than a dozen together. Also, they're just like other human beings, and can change their minds after watching a movie multiple times. I don't know what gives you the moral high ground to criticize them doing something completely normal.
