The fact that the explosion went off ahead of time, increases the probability of the bomb being detected/tempered with in an unsuccessful attempted of being disarmed. Love the fact that Julian doesn't have to feign anymore.

@@IMDARKFIRE007I think Rom beats him out on that one. If it wasn’t for his self replicating mines the war would have been over before it even began. The dominion fleet would have stormed the alpha quadrant. I think the Romulans would have entered the war eventually anyway. The Federation/Klingons struggled against the dominion forces without the reinforcements. Had that fleet made it across it would have been the end of the war.

Of course the wormhole aliens get the final victory for making that fleet disappear, but had the minefield not stalled the dominion for so long they never would have had a chance to retake the station or get into the wormhole for the aliens to wipe them out so yeah, Rom saved the alpha quadrant but Garak is a close second in speeding up the Romulans entry to the war.

The fate of humanity often falls on a handful of people in a lab running seemingly innocuous tests. Food scarcity, air quality, drinkable water, cultivable soil will determine how long we have. And geologists, botanists, microbiologists/virologists, environmental scientists will determine how long humanity has.

It's interesting to think about what went wrong here. Did the station flag the unusual weight because of one of the canisters being willing, that being why they put up the security net? Did it go off early because of some fault, or did they try to disarm the bomb and fail? Interesting to think about, but it's definitely one of those situations where it makes sense they had no clear answer.
@holmesw256 ай бұрын
I'm thinking that Sisko and his crew underestimated the automation of the storage facility's systems; this is a quadrant-spanning empire's logistics system that keeps in line their primary military force, it's going to have robust safeguards, not just be some guys in a warehouse checking over each and every barrel with their eyeballs. My theory is that the field kicking in wasn't even a security measure but a logistical one. The canisters were beamed directly on to weighing scales to determine everything was proper, and when one was off-weight, the system uses the field to stop ships from entering or leaving until the mismatch is identified. I imagine with transporters it's very easy to accidentally beam down a full canister when you meant to beam an empty one, or vice versa, and the Dominion can't afford a White resupply ship rocking up to a Jem'Hadar outpost only to crack open their only empty canister. This is why the storage facility doesn't go on alert or immediately accuses a security breach. To them, this probably just happens once every few months, and they didn't want a ship to leave with improper cargo. As for why it explodes early, who knows. They may have tried and failed to defuse it, but even the Chief isn't perfect. After all, the problem with bombs is that you can't truly test them.
@stevensanderson28176 ай бұрын
You have to realize that these are drugs to keep their troops obedient, they form an addiction and the changelings continue to give them their fix as long as they stay loyal. So they face the same issues as any dealer would with an addict, things like trying to steal the drugs or trick the dealer into giving them more. In this case it could have been something as simple as the system knowing the weight of each container when its full and when its empty. If I call in that im dropping off 80 containers that should weigh lets say 80 pounds and suddenly im reading 95 pounds at drop off then ive got a problem, there should be 95 containers there and yet im only reporting 80. Now I have to think that maybe someone is trying to trick the system into sending 95 containers of full ketracel instead of the 80 that ive been allotted. Plus whenever they transport something it has a distinct pattern in the buffer which has already been shown to be able to isolate and remove alien pathogens and also detect and disable weapons before they are rematerialized. So it would be a very simple thing for the transporter to flag an explosive signature when its expecting empty steel barrels, the only unbelievable part of this is that the transporter should have held the pattern in the buffer and never materialized it, the timer would have been stuck indefinitely until the odd signature could be identified. Then they would have finished the transport and instantly beamed it out into space far enough away to not do damage.
@commenter48986 ай бұрын
@@holmesw25 That explanation would make sense in modern day logistics, but with sensors and the ability to analyse transporter patterns, they must have way more advanced ways to check what is being transported. I mean, even Garak observing from afar could tell whether the canisters were empty. Given that, O'Brien must have already used a bunch of ways to hide the bomb. Something as obvious as weight must be the first thing to spoof. For example he might remove a part of the canister to account for the bomb's weight.
@mammutMK26 ай бұрын
Hard to say 7f the sensors could detect it or if he just was listening to the communication. But even with sensors it may have looked like a full canister, before causing more chaos with teleporting the canisters back and forward again (that would have been hilarious thinking about it , garak saying "they made a mistake during transport, they are sending our casters back to check what we received) they maybe just send a guy to that one canister to check and that caused the explosion.
@mistermonologue24426 ай бұрын
@@holmesw25while that was well thought-out their systems would be too sophisticated to pick up the wrong canisters and the jem'hadar are so overly professional no doubt they have a regulation on the empty cannisters of white and keep it in the same place every time.

The science nerd in me can't help thinking how lucky they are to be so close to a starbase, since on a galactic scale, 17 light years is nothing, and they can't even be that close as full impulse won't be light speed.
@Rakonat6 ай бұрын
Distances in Star Trek aren't quite as far as we like to think they are, at least not during the TNG/DS9/VOY era. Bajor is at the edge of Federation space, and is only 52 light years from earth (this number fluctuates a bit but usually is around 50), so depending how deep into Cardassian/Dominion territory, we could be talking distances only 3-5 light years. Impulse engines are sublight though we get wildly different numbers for just what different ships can attain, but we generally see anything from .01c or 1% the speed of light up to .75C for some ships, but these numbers themselves are meaningless since there really isn't a maximum speed in the vacuum of space apart from C though I'm sure the technobabble would go on how they can't go faster than certain speeds without deflectors or space dust would pulverize the hull. If we go with the .25C being what they can safely sustain then that would put them roughly 4.25 LY from the nearest Federation Station, assuming they had enough supplies to last 17 years.
@scottmatheson33466 ай бұрын
the federation is 8000 lightyears across, but bajor happens to be just 50 lightyears away? i think there's no actual consistency to be used here.
@Rakonat6 ай бұрын
I have no idea where you're getting info that the Federation is 8000 light years across. Qo'nos is only 4 days from Earth using Warp 4.5, and Risa in TNG is canonically stated to be 90 light years from Earth, the furthest any human colony had been at the time. UFP is surrounded nearly on three sides by Romulans, Cardassians and Klingons so they don't have much room to expand, ontop of Warp Engines not being nearly as fast as people seem to think they are. Inconsistent as the warp scale is, warp 5 could on average do 2-4 light years per day, while Warp 8 speeds seem to hover around 6 ly/day and Voyager being the fastest canonical ship couldn't even accomplish 10 ly/day. I'm not sure where you're getting this 8,000 light years across the federation, given it would take years for a ship to travel from the border to earth in the center of the UFP. @@scottmatheson3346
@resiplayerz6 ай бұрын
Presumably the Ketracel-White Storage Facility would be hidden but close to major shipping routes as all dominion ships from all over the quadrant need to regularly resupply.. Naturally federation starbases would be in those same high traffic areas to cater for the restocking and maintenance needs of federation ships.

Competent enough to detect the bomb in transport, but not competent enough to defuse it without setting it off early.
@brianmonks86575 ай бұрын
Why try to defuse it when you can just store it in the transporter buffer and transport it into space whenever you want to, assuming you can't just erase the information in the buffer?
@battleax865 ай бұрын
@brianmonks8657 It depends what kind of range their transporter has. The station's purpose is to beam up canisters of ketracel white to ships right above them. The bomb's blast radius is 800 km, stronger than the largest nuke that's ever been invented. Beaming it away might have still gotten them killed.
@brianmonks86575 ай бұрын
@@battleax86 Then just keep it stored in the buffer until they can get an expert to disarm it, or just erase it from the buffer. No need to rush and materialize it.
@battleax865 ай бұрын
@brianmonks8657 That opens the question of how much space they have in their buffers. Would they be able to hold the bomb indefinitely and still conduct resupply operations? Do their buffers even have a function that allows them to delete things? Dominion technology isn't necessarily designed with safety in mind. If I'm the station's Vorta commander and my options are to shut down my entire operation for an indefinite period of time...which could get a lot of Vorta killed by rabid Jem'Hadar...or attempt to disarm the bomb, I just might choose the second option.
@brianmonks86575 ай бұрын
@@battleax86 Compared to blowing up in minutes, the question of if they can hold the bomb indefinitely and still conduct resupply operations seems pretty unimportant. I doubt they can still conduct resupply operations after blowing up. I'm pretty sure that replacing the old transporter buffer with a new clean one is a lot cheaper than replacing the entire base.

What I never understood about this scene is that the Dominion had apparently no registry of ships that were either lost or being captured by the enemy. Surely the Ketracel facility should verify every incoming vessel and not blindly acknowledging the request. Also they should have picked up the canister filled with the 90 isoton explosive; we have seen it happening before when a transport is in progress, at least with Starfleet transporters they can detects weapons even before they de-materialize.

No noise in space.
@johnwang99143 ай бұрын
The calculations implied they would be at warp judging by what Dax was saying. If they were FTL, then there would be no way for the explosion to reach them as the explosion would all be sublight. The greatest danger would be if some debris got caught in their warp bubble and hence traveled with them. Indeed the calculations should've been for how long they could wait before the explosion and debris reached them not what the earliest time the shields would drop and as they are probably quite some distance away from the base (it's not like our ISS is next to the ground), chances are the explosion wouldn't reach them anyways. Remember those transporters are usually used from orbit to reach the ground so there's no need to be close enough to the base for the explosions to affect them. Remember, the distances in space are vast...

As this exact scene shows, distance is relative to drama on Star Trek

Why didn't they just go to Warp instead of using Impulse Engines? The explosion was premature so the Security Net was down.
@ThePathStrider4 ай бұрын
Maybe for security and safety reasons, everyone approaching the facility has to have minimal power to their warp engines. There probably wasn't enough time to power up the warp core once the explosives went off.

without looking it up, I think they ended up crashing on the planet with a squad of Jem'Hadar low on Ketracel-white, and their Vorta made a deal with Sisko to save his own skin, and hand them over a broken Dominion communicator, which O'Brien managed to fix and call for rescue. One of the cooler episodes.
@epiendless11286 ай бұрын
nitzky8936 is right. They crash into a planet inside a nebula. Fun fact - the closest known nebula to Earth is 700 light years away, so how that was easier to get to than a Federation base is something of a mystery.

"Turning over piloting controls to the main computer." Finally... always annoys me when they try to show that humans (or Vulcans) are better pilots than the computer. (Just a shame they still had to manually invoke it when the explosion went off early; seriously, couldn't you have tied the detection of the explosion into the computer as a start signal too?)

I've come to really appreciate the writers of the older Star Trek shows, Garret has become one of my favourite characters, its a shame he wasn't apart of the cast, his throw away lines like "of course it does, they think alike, the show runners did an excellent job putting him into the show, by the last season, the characters some that we thought were villains, became heroes. it was a shame they threw away the actress that played dax, she shouldn't have replaced her, they should have put carrot into the main cast after that, I know paramount, they stole my script for a new show, I was developing a series like picard season 3 episode 5, they stole ideas like a force field arounfd the warp core and voyagers episode where they put holograms into space as a fleet of ships. all back in 96, but with new cast, they stole all my ideas and sprinkled them into voyager, the films and ds9. however I can prove the ideas in the shows are mine, I still have the Ad and script copyrighted and the Ad paramount from the Star Trek magazine, issue 2. and I copyrighted all the ideas, but how do you prove an idea is your idea. if the real creator of ds9 had a job, I've got no chance , he went onto to create basbylon5. how many ideas did Star Trek show runners really steal. we'll never know. but the writers did an outstanding job nevertheless.

It's a Jem'hadar warship. Bare-bones, Spartan, it only carries the essentials, which means no backup power matrix.

It doesn't have any of those things. They're in a stolen Jem'Hadar warship. No Federation/Starfleet luxuries, very spartan, and the Dominion treats those ships as practically disposable.

Maybe emergency forcefields activated in the facility muted the blast enough to save their lives.
