So much admiration for Jake for sharing his past with us! I can’t begin to imagine how difficult that time must have been for him, and it’s such a relief to hear he recovered. I remember when you first started to include him in your videos and he was so reluctant to be identified, now he’s talking so openly about very personal experiences 🤍 You’re both such beautiful souls and I hope you and your loved ones are always healthy & happy!

Huge respect for Jake for opening up like this on a public platform. I suffered from ED myself so I can imagine how hard it was for him to talk about it. I love how we can see that you were hurting when he was sharing his experience, I love you two together, the amount of love you share and how visible it is. So glad Jake recovered, keep growing together. Love you 💚

I'm turning 32 next year and in retrospect, 25 feels soooo young. At that age, I felt like a total adult because I finally got the responsibility and freedom that I wished for when I was younger. But looking back, I feel like I matured even more between 25 and 30 than I did between 20 and 25 ..... Maybe in 5 years you will look back and feel the same way? Who knows :)

Hey Sissel I have a recommendation for your extra beauty and makeup products. Freelance Makeup artists that work on their own as well as makeup artist students that are building up their makeup kit. Also women/teens in the safe-houses who ran away from domestic abused families/situations, female teenagers in foster-care/orphanage system can use these gifted products. I’m sure this would be super useful to them and they would tremendously appreciate your help.

I'm continually impressed by the depth and diversity of thoughts and ideas in your content. To simply label them as 'vlogs' would be an injustice, in my view. Your videos represent an entirely unique genre, shedding light on issues and topics that often go unspoken. What sets you apart is your ability to address these matters in a truly insightful manner. Watching your latest videos feels like revisiting your older ones, yet there's a noticeable evolution in your perspective and approach to content creation. I'm genuinely excited by what I see and can't wait for what's to come. Keep up the exceptional work Sissel

I always enjoy your take in the different aspects of life. For instance, I myself have lived in 4 different countries over my 25 years of life and it is really overwhelming having to adapt to the differences in culture and then feel whole, but I love how you always acknowledge the things you don't necessary like, about Korea in this case, but also respect the fact that it's part of the culture and you have to adapt to it to the best of your abilities and comfort, which where I live now not at lot of people have the ability or even care about trying. So THANK YOU for always brining that positive more optimistic point of view to life. Much love to you and Jake 💞💞

I've been working in fashion industry for more than 13 years already and I can say how triggering it may be. Same as in Korea, sometimes people are too straight-forward about models appearances and they aren't being delicate about bringing some points. It's especially cruel when they're talking to really young girls who may think that there's something really wrong with them. I'm glad that the industry is changing and is more open to variety/diversity of looks, yet this problem still exists. And same in Korea for sure. And I hear it a lot from my clients (I'm a model coach and photographer) that random people are often pointing on their weight and appearance. I personally haven't experienced this while living here, but I can say even though I understand that there's just this cultural aspect here, it's still uncomfortable and hurtful sometimes. Thank you for bringing this topic Sissel! And thanks to Jake for talking about his ED past. I know some people are ashamed of this things, especially guys, but bringing awareness is crucial! Sending hugs and love 💞

I definitely think the beauty standards are extreme in Korea. Most of the KZbinrs I follow in Korea (majority are foreigners) have all had some incidences when in Korea about their look or in particular their size being of a negative nature. I appreciate yours and Jake’s honesty with this topic as it’s for sure a work in progress issue.

I love your glasses! They look so good on you and they're the perfect colour hehe Styling them with a hair pin looks so cute 💚💚 As a person who's experienced both Scandinavian and Korean culture my whole life, it was so refreshing to learn how to give comments to people based on their outfits/items instead of getting comments about weight/ appearance in a negative way. Personally I see the western/foreign culture of that being more healthy for me but at the same time I know Koreans don't always have bad intentions regarding their comments so I have to relate to it becoming quite messy mentally hahaha love u

It's something I'm struggling with in Italy now, because it seems like so many interactions I'm trying to brush/laugh things off I wouldn't have to normally like weight...so it feels good knowing I'm not alone and remembering every culture has its own things like this. So true and relatable. I just saw some Koreans ladies here in London and they looked so dolled up for everyday/travel this morning when I went to work! You can see the effort they put into the outfit for sure. Then you have British people going out on weekends…. Not sure I like that look (not all) either haha. Like you said, culture play a massive role 🤎☝️ Also thanks for sharing perspective Sissel and also Jake for personal past story. I am more petite but got boobs and hips and a bit over the standards of Asian thin and beauty standard and my partner don’t mind at all, but my mum think I am getting round and Asian standards I must be fat 😅 but I am not (just not workout fat)but they have standards and seem to like the stick look which I dislike…. It’s just different and I think as a women we should always change if we want to and dress things that we feel good in and fit 💚 It’s so true with being open with talking about weight compared to the west and I agree it’s not negative in Asia as in the west just can be awkward and uncomfortable especially depending on the tone and words haha this is the longest comment written hahahaha x

I can relate the vid. Before I move to here I was exposed to all the videos describing SK as a scary dystopian world with toxic culture only. I realized many of them were pretty exaggerated after living here. I mean if you are scared to travel to Korea due to your weight after watching too many videos about Korean beauty standard, it is time to stay away from internet. I can say this cause I was the one who watched EVERY videos talking about Korean beauty standard. What I can tell you is, no one cares about the weight of traveller. Now I look back how I was naive to take all the contents so seriously. Now I understand such scary videos attract more views and make more money! There are toxic beauty standard but it is exaggerated in this online world!

I usually enjoy Sissel's videos but this one in particular comes off extremely deluded. For many reasons. First, she seems to imply at the beginning that the stereotype that Korean beauty standards are incredibly harsh is not true, but gives zero explanation as to how Korean beauty standards actually differ in harshness from what she was expecting before she came to Korea. Second of all (I want to add here that I am happy for Jake for becoming healthier, I commend him, but) he implies that Korean standards have now loosened up and Korean people are now into "being" healthy because they go to the gym. As someone who has been living in Korea for almost three years now, I absolutely love it here and am planning on settling down here, and I am all for clearing up wrongful stereotypes about Korea. But let me tell you, the beauty standard stereotype is not exaggerated in any way, shape, or form. Sissel and Jake seem to be surrounded by kind, well-meaning, happy, and healthy people, which could contribute to this opinion. However, make no mistakes, this is their small (and might I add, financially privileged) social circle, and does not reflect Korean society. Every single one of my Korean friends has been told that they should get plastic surgery BY THEIR OWN PARENTS. It starts there. When girls post a picture to Instagram, people have no problem at all publicly commenting things like "wow your cheeks are so fat" "cover up, these clothes are not for your body type" "not pretty" and even harsher things. These are all comments I have seen myself under my friends' pictures. It also seems like Sissel at the end of the video attempts to suggest that these comments are well-intended. Come on, seriously? There was a recent k-drama "mask girl" which touches on this very issue. People who are considered ugly in this society are treated like second-class citizens, and therefore most people struggle viciously to fit the beauty standard. They even get discriminated against in job interviews. I have lived in 5 different countries and never have I witnessed a society that is as obsessed with appearance as South Korea is, it's not the plastic surgery capital of the world for nothing. When it comes to Jake's comment, we must make a distinction between "being" healthy, and "looking" healthy. Koreans are now obsessed with muscle bodies, yes, and they want to look healthy, but they could not care less about actually being healthy. They do not exercise for the health benefits, and still heavily restrict their diets to achieve a certain look. Orthorexia is still an eating disorder. Not only this, but Koreans are the biggest consumers of luxury goods in the WORLD. They might not be able to afford rent, but rest assured they WILL walk around in Balenciaga shoes and a Chanel purse. This further comes to show that their outward appearance and how they are perceived by others is very high in their priorities list, and oftentimes higher than health. Please do not be deceived by this video and come to Korea expecting any less than extremely harsh beauty standards. I feel like this comment is very messy because I wrote it quickly in the heat of the moment, but yeah, this is my opinion.

We are all in our own bubble. It is natural that we have different experience. It is not like one is deluded while one is realistic. I am living in SK too and none of my Korean friends were recommended to have plastic surgery. How did I know? Cause I heard the streotype and asked about it 😂 She is referring people like me who literally believed EVERY STREOTYPES that they read online. Since this country is in the middle of a lot of attention, there are actually many exaggeration. Before I come to this country I watched several videos such as 'why Koreans skinny' and most of comments were full of 'cause everybody starves to fit in' 'eating disorder' blah blah. But the reality wasn't like that. My coworkers actually don't really care and eat more than me 😂(Now I think Korean are eating too much. You don't need such heavy brekki and lunch EVERY day. their obsession to full meal is too much imo) How about the surprise when I realized the eating disorder is more prevalent in my country than SK regarding the statistic? She is talking about such sterotypes and I really can relate to them. I don't think this video misleads viewers. I hate unhealthy beauty standards here too! I never hesitate to tell Koreans that I will never raise my kids here because of that. It is toxic and It is also true that it is often exaggerated in this online world. I once saw a traveller doing a street interview in Myeongdong saying 'I heard everybody does plastic surgery here and actually most of them were normal people!'. Because of this type of exaggeration, I saw lot of people even worry about their weight when they are just visiting for travelling. Reality is most of Koreans don't give a sh*t about travellers. I sometimes laugh out how I naively believed EVERYTHING online and how the reality was different. This vid will be helpful to people like me.

My family is very Austrian but we live in the US and for some reason all of the women in my family always has some sort of comment on appearance when they see you. I’m the only one that never mentions or cares enough to say anything. It drives me crazy. It’s not just weight, it’s hair or skin or clothes. Something has to be mentioned every time I see any of them. I have never understood why my family insists on doing this so it’s interesting to hear it’s common in Korea too.

My comment is not about korean beauty standards it is just a general observation concerning modern beauty standards and work out in specific, The good thing about the new trend to work out is that it is so much healthier than to just get as skinny as possible. Nevertheless, I have the impression that this trend hasn't really started for health reasons, but simply because of a change of taste: being skinny isn't en vogue anymore, being muscular is. So, the gym it has to be. Working out is the new requirement to make your body presentable, to make it fit into the new standard. Being a sporty person is great. 'Self-Optimization' on the other hand can be like a drug, and going to the gym for hours several times a week, in order to look and feel more beautiful is not that far away from dieting yourself away for the same reasons... Like I already said: it is more healthy than the skinny trend, which I like. But I'd like it even more if it prooved not to be just a new beauty-standard. People without a four times a week work out routine aren't necessarily unhealthy nor unfit, they just don't have a work-out-body.

I hope more people just try and live a healthy life and not worry about size so much. As a kid and teen I was skinny. Then as I aged I just naturally started to fill out a bit. Now I have had three kids. My body will never be the same. It’s not a perfect body but it’s a body that produced three beautiful kids. They are healthy and happy. So I might not be a size 6/8 any more but I’m ok with that. Now I just want to be healthy and strong enough to live a good life.

I don't know how to explain or discrip it, but if your "real/ true me" is awakening, because your view of the life had changed. You had learned or understand sth. your personality will completly change to the person/ me to have to be . In some moments you feel, the life ist different, maybe a little bit easier and sometimes hard to be steadfest in the new situation. Thats what happend to me, since i got my little sweet daughter. I hope you can understand what I mean.

Visually you do have very Korean aesthetic even down to style of your brows. Asian cultures tend to copy rather than have an individual outlook on beauty standards. Fitting in doesn't always mean conformity to general consensus for healthier life style & good well being.
