What a great actress and there are so many things right with this performance and this pick. First of all, Ms Spacek was perfectly cast. That natural twang in her voice and her feistiness belonged to Loretta Lynn as well. Who else could have convincingly aged from thirteen to middle age? Who could have brought the depth of emotion and the changes to this character from naive mountain girl to overwhelmed music legend? And who else could have done her own singing well enough to do honor to the real life woman? Nobody else. A virtually unparalleled triumph.

Sissy gave a real tour-de-force performance in a terrific movie that was built around her. There was no competition. MTM was competitive because of her veteran status. Thank God the Academy didn’t get suckered into that.

That was a tough field. Five utterly amazing actresses all deserving of that statuette. Can’t deny that Sissy Spacek gave a knockout performance in that amazing movie.
