Zwei grandiose Sängerinnen, was für ein Zusammenklang. Vielen Dank 🎼🎹🍀

My first Arabella, when I was 13, was with Della Casa and Rothenberger at the Old Met. These two voices were sheer perfection in this music, separately or together. And they had a rare sister-like quality onstage. Unforgettable.

Charming Miss Rothenberger! One of the most elegant and greatest singers of the 20th century! I am sure that all lovers of operas and classic songs will miss her tender and graceful appearance. This piece here is perhaps one of the most typical and gorgeous roles of her. Good bye, Anneliese Rothenberger, and thank you so much for sharing your voice with us!

Exquisite. Musical perfection. In this duet Della Casa and Rothenberger create distinctive characterizations in inflection and gesture. When they come together, they are sublime. This is the stuff of operatic legends.

I used to think that Rothenburger had spent her considerable talent on lesser works. I was wrong. This is simply splendid singing. But for me this the discovery of Della Casa. Seamless almost effortless sound. I would have loved to hear her "live".I'm a new and devoted fan.Her other U-Tube offerings are equally as good. A major 20th century fully realized performer.

If a tape of the complete Arabella is around it deserves to be released commercially in spite of the technical deficiencies and that is the only place where there exists a deficiency. Della Casa's interpretation is supreme and the role suited her perfectly. Who cares that it is in black and white?

@rlee1976 You are so right, singer or not, we KNOW this lady can sing, indeed. I was lucky in having written her a long letter a couple of years ago and she responded with a wonderful (shorter but in English!) letter. This comforts me now she is gone. She will not be gone from the collective memory, that's for sure. What an artist, what a lady! Thanks for putting us back on the track!

@Chazzan805 Yes, there is a wonderful DG Salzburg Festspiel Dokument from 1960 [453 200-2] with Della Casa as the Marschallin (my favourite too), Hilde Gueden as Sophie (she's lovely but Rothenberger's was ravishing in the film), the wonderful and almost only Octavian of the era, Zena Jurinac (aged 88 and still driving!), the necessary Erich Kunz as Faninal and a wunderbar Otto Edelmann as Baron Ochs. It's MONO and we don't care. The sound is great. Good luck!

@mckavitt My only regret is not having heard many of these great German singers live-Janowits, Jurinac, LDC and especially Wunderlich. I have been a Met opera goer since the early 60s and missed them all. I was scheduled to see Wunderlich's debut two weeks after his untimely death.He was to have performed in Don Giovanni. I have been tracking both LDC and Rothenburger and have built playlists of both along with Janowitz. Let me suggest you take a look at Janowitz in Brahm's Ger. Reqiuem

Yes to Rothenberger's refined and animated artistry in ARABELLA , but i prefer her as Zdenka, and LDC as the lady herself. Sublime singing.

The both sound like boy sopranos. It’s a quality with all of this music that can go this way easily. It’s not my favorite way but it has the effect of making them she two singers sound like one weird twisting ethereal voice. With no text or context just beyond the clouds.

I had a bad quality live performance of Della Casa singing the Countess. I used to cry, but I lost it a few years ago. Does anyone have any information on live/pirate recordings of her as the Countess? I would love to find it again one day.
@Chazzan80514 жыл бұрын
@mckavitt What a mistake! I actually meant the Marschalin. On the words "silberne rose," right on the word "rose" she went up to the most beautiful pianissimo and held it longer than is usually done in that phrase. If you know about a Rosenkavlier live performance let me know. But thanks for the other info.

@bobb60 Oh, how i understand you. When i discovered Wunderlich, he had been dead for several years! I have never seen one of the singers you mention LIVE, but i wrote to Rothenberger and she hand-typed a lovely response--i walked on air for some time and am saddened, really sad, that she died, in my opinion, too soon. Have you visited the Lisa Della Casa Fan Club (on fb) yet? Welcome!

Lisa Della Casa was vocally ideal for Arabella but her acting is little more than pleasant here. Rothenberger is ravishing as Zdenka. It took time for me to get used to her looks, which by the 1970s was fluctuating between Dr Joyce Brothers and Zsa Zsa. Yet there's something nicely straightforward about her. The coy charm is lathered on too thickly, unlike Schwarzkopf.

@tightlygagged yes, softer, but shorter too, letting LDC keep it going several seconds longer. How sweet. I adore the interpretation and even their acting seems credible to me. A more heavenly duo has yet to be heard, in my estimation. They recorded a duo album together, apropos, on ROSENKAVALIER duets.

@FoggyRoad81 Not i. I prefer the buzz in the Rothenberger/Della Casa harmony. Plus, i don't believe the latter would've taken to Battle (appropriately named if the rumours i hear are true), whereas she loved Rothenberger--but only half as much as AR loved her! Te Kanawa is scrumptious--with Battle, with any really good lyric soprano.

When can we see Arabella again at Covent Garden? Maybe we need another Kiri?
@mckavitt14 жыл бұрын
@Chazzan805 Are you perhaps referring to the Met version of the 60s with Erich Leinsdorf conducting and Giorgio Tozzi as Figaro? I prefer it to the sanctified version conducted by Erich (slow on the uptake) Kleiber. The recititatives are an agony in that one. It is available on amazon and other cd sites. And i intend to get it!

To profgv I am sure that in Europe there are many films that will never see the light of day. Houses were heavily subsidized and as a result many of the performances were televised. A few have made it, e.,g., the German Barber with Wunderlich, for openers. There is also a German Jenuf with Varnay that is apparently being released; it is in color and the wrong language, but Varnay is is good voice--clearly the best Kostelnichka. Money or the lack of it is usually the reason.

Sublime singing from both. And, as perverse as this MIGHT sound, there is a certain erotic element between the two women, fully intended by Strauss, i believe, as AR is, for the moment, 'wearing the pants."
