I remembered you mentioned you wash loose without braiding and banding. The bunching could be a result of stopping too early. Everyone is different but I braided and banded beyond when I needed to and used the starter shampoo for a little longer and I feel like that gave my locs more maturation time.

You know what - that’s a good point. Perhaps I did stop braiding and banding too early. Lord help me. Thanks for bringing this to my attention, bc I didn’t think about that.

I’ve been thinking about cutting my locs for some of the same reasons as you. My stylist advised I wait until I make 3 years because of concerns that the cut locs would start to unravel. Trying to hold out for the next several months but I’m really antsy.

You should look into knotted locs with Melissa Blake. No painful retightenings or having to worry about if the ends of your hair are too thick. I can absolutely relate to what you are saying about that.
