I was very interested in this video because it is from an orthodontist. I am a board certified pediatric dentist. In research studies done at the college and professional level, only thermoplastic custom made mouthguards effectively prevent dental impact injuries. Vacuum formed and "boil and bite" mouthguards performed very poorly in protecting the teeth. This alternative will allow for shifting teeth, but I would be cautious in recommending it. If it is comfortable and worn properly, no chewing, it may serve as a partially effective alternative to a custom fitted mouthguard using a dental model.

I am going to have braces and then I buy one off these mouthgaurds (I play soccer) to protect my braces because one of my team mates hase braces and got hit at his jaw with a ball and then his braces broke and he screamed of the pane because a metal piece of the braces was cutting him in his mouth and now he can't play soccer or any contact sport anymore until his braces are not needed anymore

My daughter has a pretty small mouth for her age (10). I read that if modeling with braces we should use the adult size but I’m afraid it’ll be too long in the back. Can we still use her youth size one to mold over the foil and brackets?

I think you could cut the mouthguard before the fitting it to her size, and then mold it. Ask the orthodontist too though!

Nope, you can, but they're only required for extreme contact sports, (lacrosse, football, wrestling, etc), soccer and basketball don't require them, and running doesn't either.

You run the risk of getting the mouthguard stuck on your brackets. We highly recommend having the ortho do it, but it can be done if you cover the brackets in dental wax before fitting.

That's understandable since not every orthodontist are familiar with this guard. They are most likely worried about you ripping off the brackets when you take impressions for a dentist-made one. SISU gives you a custom fit without impressions. To prevent the SISU material from getting too tight and latching on to the brackets, you need to cover them with wax or foil during the fitting. It's not as easy as a boil and bite, but it's worth it since you'll be able to talk, breathe, and drink easily. You'll also be able to remold it as your teeth are shifting.
