Sit Out, Turn In by Jon Morrison
fanaticwrestli...
This wrestling training video demonstrates the Sit Out, Turn In by Jon Morrison technique.
Fanatic Wrestling, like it’s sister site BJJ Fanatics was founded by a pair of grappling fanatics dedicated to bringing you the best wrestling competitors and coaches in the world to learn from. They both realized they were missing an entire section of the grappling community so the idea for Fanatic Wresting was born.

We called it sit out and spin. The move that helped me win a state championship. You need to understand how your opponent reacts when you sit out. If he has his arm around your waist at the hips you will have a hard time completing it because he will be too far back on your after the spin and you can not clear your head out and he can block your spinning it with his left hand. You say throw your left arm up so he can not come back but no, that is your 2 point arm that you throw up and over him to get your points. A real good wrestler is able to recognize exactly what you are doing as soon as you start your spin. He is going to use his arm that was around your waist and hook your right arm pit and while you are pulling your head out he circling around you and now is still in control only on the opposite side of where he started and you are left figuring out what happened. When doing this or any move you have to know exactly how your opponent might respond reacting on instinct. When you do the spin and your head hits the mat you have to feel if your opponent is slipping off and trying to circle around you and that is where you throw up your right arm, not your left, to slow him down so you can catch up to him and get your arm around his waist before he gets it around you. Like 2 dogs chasing each others tail lol. As I was sitting out I would take my right arm and wing his arm that was around my waist and slide it up to my armpit. That way when I did my spin his arm was way up by my shoulders and it gave me plenty of room to clear my head out. Also as I said your left arm is your 2 point arm you want to get around his waist but your right arm still has a job to do. As you are pulling your head out you take your right hand and place it right above your opponents right arm just above the elbow to keep him from reaching back into you and it will also help push you back and in control of him. When learning moves you need to understand both sides of the move. You need to know how to counter the move when it is done to you and also so you know how your opponent is reacting when you are doing it. The hardest thing for kids to learn is just because a move is there does not mean it will be there the whole move. Kids too often get in trouble because they keep trying to force something that is no longer there. The old "you got to know when to hold them".

At the HS level, I'm seeing two things: 1. Not turning in. Sometimes they get their weight out and think they can just run straight out, and either their opponent hooks the head and pulls back for an exposure/back points, or they just cover the rear leg and ankle ride straight into a breakdown. Other times the bottom wrestler will turn _out_ instead of in, I guess thinking they can just get a reversal despite not being in the "switch" position. Again, even mediocre wrestlers just cover, and this almost always leads to a really bad spot, especially with leg riders. 2. "Reaching" for the Peterson. We were always taught to suck it up and keep spinning, and to only use the Peterson a. if the guy on top spins with you really quickly but doesn't keep his weight back (which puts the leg in position for Peterson, and also puts their weight in a bad position to defend against it) or b. Late in the third when you're down by a ton and desperate for points. I'm not seeing _pausing_ for the Peterson so much as _reaching_ for it instead of either continuing to circle or popping the head. Which, of course, exposes cross-face ride to that side, or, worse, having top just sit through and set up a stack.
