Wow. Fantastic insight on this raag but also playing technique as well. Wish I'd seen this when working on Ahir Bhairav. Do more ragas!

Very fine and expressive playing there. Are you a student of Ustad Imrat Khan perchance?

Thanks.... no, a student of Budhaditya's

Well, you learned well. I play sitar and surbahar but nowhere as nicely as you do.

Thank u for your very kind words. I actually officially gave up playing sitar in 2006 after 17 years of practicing. Now I very rarely play anymore. It was a hard decision but I decided that sitar was a bridge for me "to Indian music", and finally my path is to play another instrument.

So surbahar then is your instrument now? That would make sense to someone serious about North Indian classical music, since the elaboration of the raga really happens in Alap, Jor, and Jhala. I have only had my surbahar for three years, but I'm thoroughly enjoying having it for the reasons just mentioned. I'm sure that Budhaditya is a great teacher. I met him years ago in England when we were both young. I'm 72 now. Your explanations of the progressive elaboration of ahir bhairav are first rate by the way.

Thanks again. BM taught me that stuff well. No I have never seriously played surbahar or even owned one. My main instrument now is one that I designed and built myself > a combination of an oud and sarod > called a Ragmakamtar. I am orginally a guitarist (played professionally for many years before taking up sitar), so ultimately I found I feel more comfortable with something more from the guitar family. Also I wanted to find my own voice - my own identity... afterall I am not Indian.

Very exquisite and expressive playing...my friend...all the best to you....Who has made this Surbahar? J.K.Sengupts?

I don't know the maker of this instrument > it is not mine.... It needs really a lot of work... taraf strings don't respond.
