Thanks for your videos Stacy - we got a Bernese mountain pup this year and we're IN LOVE - he's my first dog - very intelligent, very sweet and affectionate (we get compliments on his good behavior from everyone) - and handsome!

Such an honest, factual, and educational video. I have always been impressed with how many BMD breeders care about their breed. Wish more people did the same. BMD, are, indeed, wonderful dogs.

I have a rescue that I would swear has some berner in her! She is sweet, cuddly, goofy, and wonderful!! She’s Black and Tan with a little white on her chest and the tips of her toes. Same kind of coat. She’s never lost her puppy fur. If she’s not got any berner in her, I don’t care! But man, does she ever have the spirit of one!

the whole time i just watched the puppy like major heart eyes!! and i truly am 100% convinced that BMDs are the best breed in the world! We got our first BMD in the fall and she is the best thing in the entire world, the smartest, the goofiest, most emotional, the lovey-ist, and prettiest dog in the world! we previously had a westie and boy! are they night and day-- quite literally! they are completely opposite but i love them both, we had a white grumpy old man westie and now we have a silly young black girl berner! I love your videos and they are so helpful as we are looking for a sister friend for our baby girl, Aspen!

Yes, they are a very special breed! Just make sure you find a reputable breeder who is doing all the right things (hip, elbow, heart and eye clearances in Bernergarde) to stack the deck in favor of you getting a healthy puppy!

Stacy, I’ve seen a couple of your informative videos and want to thank you for taking the time to make them; they are really helpful. I personally have never seen one in person but videos and nuances I’ve learned about the breed have me and my wife loving them. The issue is.. we haven’t seen them and I think it’s due to our location, (North Texas). Do you know how the breed does in warmer climate? Or if it’s even recommended, since they do have joint and other health issues.

Hi Pablo, There aren't many great breeders in Texas because the weather isn't conducive to the breed, however I do know many owners who live there. I would suggest looking at traveling to get your puppy and contacting the Texas Bernese Mountain Dog Club website to see who they recommend as well as Arizona. Your area is the largest without a lot of breeders. This website will give you the contacts to try: www.bmdca.org/rcc/Regional_Clubs.php I'm happy to answer any questions you might have, to help out in your decision.

I know this is an older video, but I’m currently researching the breed and I have a few questions. How big of a deal is line breeding? How do the lines differ? I’ve noticed a huge variation in orthopedic scores even in the same litter, is it mostly genetic or do you think it has more to do with environmental factors? Berners are confusing me, my main breed is Beaucerons and it seems genetics work very different in those breeds 😂

I'm happy to chat with you, please feel free to email or dm me. I don't mind a little line breeding, but it is important to know what they are line breeding on. Orthopedics in Bernergarde give you some of the story, looking at aunts, uncles other litters produced by the sire or dam are also helpful. Very little of ortho clearances are actually environmentally influenced.

I wanted a dog with hair too. I like it...lol....we've had an Old English Sheepdog and there is one thing about that much grooming. It creates an incredible bond between you and the dog. However, we are somewhat older now and THAT amount of grooming might be a challenge. We've had a Great Dane too. I think a Berner would be good for us at this stage. We're experienced dog owners, don't mind hair, we LOVE big dogs. I really don't want a little dog no matter my age. There are teeny tiny people who are younger too. I think it's more down to the health of the person too!

Happy new year! I have a newfoundland, he is 10 years old, I want him to live healthy and happy as much as posible but in the future I was thinking about having a berner mountain dog, I love the newfoundland breed but I must admit that they drool too much, does the berner drool as much as the newfy? The good part of the newfy is that he doesn't lose many hair, what about the berner? Thank you!

Thank you for such an informative video. Do you think Bernese Mountain Dogs are suited to smaller gardens or would that be inappropriate?

Do you know anyone personally who lives in Florida or Georgia that you would highly recommend? I know I can look online at the websites you show, I was just wondering if you knew anyone personally. I currently have a border collie/ Great Pyrenees rescue and I’m looking for a sibling for him! My biggest concern is health and supporting breeders who CARE about the longevity and health of the breed, who will want updates on the pup even once it’s bought and taken home.

Hi Alexis, I don't give out specific breeder information publicly except to direct you to the local club as they can help you find good breeders. Your local club is found here: www.cvbmdc.org and I would connect with them for their breeders. You can also go to the National club site for more breeders on their breeder referral. (www.bmdca.org/olbr/) I also suggest going to a local dog show or two to meet breeders and their dogs. There are some great breeders in your area who you can verify their health clearance claims on Bernergarde.org and work hard to produce better Berners!

I have a question, so I have seen a breeder that had a litter of 14 bernese mountain dogs. so does that mean that the litter/parents were unhealthy or were bred irresponsibly and does a big litter mean that it is unhealthy?
@SitStaywithStacySlade
@SitStaywithStacySlade 3 жыл бұрын
The size of a litter doesn't mean anything in regard to the responsibility of the breeder. Having verifiable health clearances on Bernergarde.org on the mom and dad for hips, elbows, heart and eyes is what makes a breeder responsible. Also, not breeding a dog two heat cycles in a row after a large litter like that and also not having more than four litters with any one female. Happy to answer any questions.

@@SitStaywithStacySlade thank you for the response, I appreciate it, how large is a large litter though? and does the health of the study also get bad after frequent breeding, like I saw 1 stud bred twice in the same month. and some dogs also have some weird names like KUMNC HERSHEY'S REESE'S PIECES , or SCIURUS VALLIS YOYO. is this normal?
@SitStaywithStacySlade
@SitStaywithStacySlade 3 жыл бұрын
@@gurshandhillon5051 Boys can breed multiple girls in a month, no biggie. It is more important that the girls get a break after at least two litters. Names are given differently in different countries. In the USA we have a kennel name that generally starts a name, in some countries they are at the end of the name. This is a great way to follow breeders whose dogs you like. It's a bit of a trademark, like my kennel name is "Sevens" so when you see a dog in a pedigree with my kennel name you would know that those dogs are from fully health tested, performance and show dogs with good temperaments. Certain kennels are "known" for certain things, or lack of things. Hoping this helps...

Hmmmmm. We have three year old Bailie and 8 month old Brodie both, of course, BMDs. Bailie is incredibly jealous of any attention Brodie gets no matter how much we make Bailie “first”. Any suggestions on how to calm some ruffled feelings? They are the best dogs and do become your life the instant you lay eyes on them.

I would continue to have separate time with each dog and do training classes separately. Eventually they will learn to share but making sure that they each have undivided attention time!

Hi Stacy am a new subscriber knew about your channel because am considering getting a bernese mountain dog.. my question is i live in an apartment with a backyard.. are they suitable for apartments or it has to be a very big house? Thanks
@SitStaywithStacySlade
@SitStaywithStacySlade 4 жыл бұрын
I have seen some people manage it, however considerations you need to think about are, what if you get a dog who barks, how will you exercise an energetic dog every day, and can you potty train a puppy in your set-up easily.
@GhadaFayek

SitStay with Stacy Slade thanks for your reply.. actually my backyard garden is quite big and potty training wont be an issue.. am from Egypt and i live in a compound that is under construction and am one of the first residents to move there literally i have 5 neighbors in 8 buildings.. not expecting to have more in at least 2-3 years.. and believe it or not we only have one berner breeder in egypt 😃 can i send you his facebook page maybe you can give me your opinion of his dogs.. i would be grateful.. thanks you and stay safe

is this dog naturally protective of the owner?
@SitStaywithStacySlade

MADELAINE677 Not really. I know a few who can be a bit protective, more aloof toward strangers. However, most are very friendly and happy to meet people and are not protective. They were bred to be a general farm dog, not necessarily a protector or guardian.
