It's the push button start. There's wto functions with two different wires. One wire powers tge solenoid and other the cdi. Your not get constant power to cdi. When pull starting ur bypassing the power output from starter button. I'm betting cleaning contacts or new button problem solved
@sparkyinanissanАй бұрын
Hi Matt. The only difference between pull start and electric start is the load on the battery. The voltage is going to drop significantly when the starter is engaged, and the the volts go up when dissengaged hence the spark when you come of the starter button. You might be able to prove this by jumping the smaller battery with a BIG battery so the volt drop is smaller. Maybe a low output from the pickup coil on the stator, or a poor ground etc.

The "jump" is the inductive kick coming off the motor coils. It isn't from the battery. When you kill power to a coil, be it a transformer, choke, motor, relay/solenoid/contactor, the collapsing magnetic field generates a spike of power in the coil and it will back-feed the circuit. The solution is to put a reverse diode across the coil terminals to short the reversed voltage spike back to itself to protect the switching contacts or transistors.

Hi Matt, I manufactured and sold some Yamaha CDI's for about eight years, under the business name DynoTronix LLC. I mostly made them for the late 70's and 80's Yamaha dirt bikes. Although I didn't make one for your quad, I can tell you a few things about CDIs. Most of the failures in the CDIs of this vintage are related to broken solder connections on the internal circuit board. In all of the models that I have reversed engineered this was a common occurrence. I can also tell you that most of the chinesium CDIs are not faithful reproductions of the OEM units. In fact, I have a friend that replaced the CDI on his quad with a China unit, and it would kick-back hard and smack the operator in the shin while kick starting. I ended up repairing the OEM unit for my friend and the quad now starts and runs smooth. Without looking at the wiring diagram, and a little more investigation, it's possible that there is something in your china CDI that is causing the electric-start issue. It's also possible that you have a low voltage issue with the CDI while cranking, as other people have commented. In any event, if you'd like, I'd be happy to help you if I can. I live just north of Pittsburgh.
@TylerDuysenАй бұрын
i believe this is the issue on my 86 ktm 2 stroke it has no spark at the plug but if you hold the hotwire that would go to the kill switch you get zapped so the stater is working but the cdi has failed internally

low voltage issue was also my guess, as soon as the starter is turning it seems the ignition system does not get enough power. Or something somewhere in the electric circuit around the starter motor, from switch to whatever else is involved, causing such an issue. Although by sound I would say, the starter itself sounds fine and does not seem slow or anything as you might expect in such a situation.

That date code tells me that battery was manufactured in 2003 on a moderately overcast and unseasonably chilly Wednesday September afternoon by a middle aged chap named Gary Harnish. Gary was really looking forward to clocking out and going to his in-laws for their weekly family roast beef dinner. Man she made good roast beef dinners with Yorkshire pudding and all the fixins! And always enough left over for him to have a nice thick roast beef sandwiches for the rest of the week at work. But Yeah, Gary loved his job and made the hell out of those batteries.

Hi Matt, over here in Australia we have plenty of Yamaha 3 wheelers and Moto 4 four wheelers. The problem you had is the same issue we have had with all those Yamahas ever since I started collecting and riding them as a teen. We found that the stator was to far away from the magnets in the flywheel to keep a strong spark up during electric starting, so we would drill the 2 x 5mm holes on the stator out to whatever the next size up drill bit we could find was and get the stator closer to the flywheel magnets. It worked plenty of times and got us going for years. Another well known problem was the cam flogging out in the head journals and causing more rattles then you would hear at a kindergarten, so we would swap heads over from machine to machine and even from the Yamaha XT200 or 225 if we found a good one. Funny little machines the Yamaha 3 wheelers and anyone could quickly learn how to wheelie them for days with their engine being so far back. They were all great until the rear axle and floating disc finally gave up the ghost on the spline from riding the rear brake constantly whilst wheel standing in which it was then time to find another one. Great content once again and honestly I was expecting the issue you got before I even got to your first attempt at starting it, so it just proves how reliable the Yamahas were at all having the same problems world wide. 😂

I'm a sparks Matt I have installed a large Gantry crane about 6 years back and it was fine, pretty easy when all is said and done. You'll have a 3 phase rotary isolator on the wall or whatever, which will go up and feed your bus bar on the horizontal rail on one side. There'll be a control box on the crane span beam and you have a 3 phase plug from the control box which has brushes on springs in it, and will slide into the bus bar. This will feed your control box and allow the crane to run up and down the length, the brushes in the plug coming from the control box to the bus bar will contact the bus bar and slide. You may already have a good grasp of this but these things are not obvious to anyone that hasn't seen it. Love the channel bud. Cork City Ireland.

My assumption is that while using the starter, you have a short to ground. Take a Multi meter to the engine bloc and see if it is getting voltage during crank, this would break ground that the spark plug is using. Thus the spark when you disengage starter and why the pull start works so well. Might need to trace service the starter to see if it is an internal short.
@WiresgaloreАй бұрын
I've seen a lot of comments regarding the no spark during crank issue, most of which suggesting to check battery voltage before/during crank, grounds, switches, etc. but CDI ignition systems 99/100 times on these small engines have nothing to do with the 12V starting/accessory power system. They use their own coil(s) on the stator, separate from the 12V charging system, to generate the AC voltage the CDI module uses to store energy then fire pulses into the ignition coil. They will typically only have a couple wires for stator power to CDI, one or two sensor wires to CDI, a wire from CDI to coil, and a kill wire from CDI to ground through some switches. That being said, a lot of systems also use a hall effect or similar style pickup, that reads a tone ring, magnet, slot, what-have-you, that determines the spark timing much the same way a magneto style ignition depends on the position of the magnet in the flywheel, or a points system uses a cam lobe in a distributor. I've seen situations where a weak or mis-aligned hall sensor can be affected by the proximity to the starter motor. Starter motors are primarily permanent magnet style motors, but can still produce a "noisy" magnetic field around them since a lot of current passes through the rotor in an alternating fashion to create rotation. Changing CDI modules may seem to produce different results, just purely by manufacturing differences and component tolerances in the tuned circuit that reads the hall effect sensor. Without service information for this specific setup its hard to say where exactly to dig in to or what meter readings are within tolerance to troubleshoot it externally, but I believe that would be a good place to focus on next.

Hubby says electric starter has to have something out of adjustment if you're only getting the occasional spark from it. I'm impressed with how many likes you get. Around 4k when I started watching and over 9 now!

Battery nut problem : Small piece of cardboard or like we did back in the day. (90's) a cigarette butt will work to hold the nut up high enough to engage the bolt. He had a problem with it starting. Note: the fire. LoL I have confidence that you will get it started. 🎉 Thanks for sharing 👍🏼

My brother had a bigger 225 that was blue with the gold rims. We jumped it a bit much for the transmission and it finally broke. It sounded just the same so listening to this brings back all the memories of going over the handle bars and getting the concussion back in 1986 or 87 and being lucky to survive due to finding marks from it rolling for 120 feet after coming off of it. You are indestructible when you are 15 or 16 you know.

Clean all the ground contacts. It makes a big difference if all connections are good. I have a 94 yamaha timberwolf that had the same problem and the whole time it was a ground connection.

Hey Matt, I haven't read through all of the comments to see if this has been mentioned yet or not, but something that may help you out. I agree with it being a low voltage situation to the cdi causing your problem with the electric start, but there may be a simple solution. I've had some ATVs and motorcycles need a relay added that applies power directly from the battery to the cdi box. A lot of times the 12v positive wire feeding the cdi is run through the key switch and the entire harness before it gets to the cdi. After years of corrosion through connectors and possible bad connections through the main switch, you'll get a voltage drop on that power wire when cranking. By adding the relay to that circuit, you eliminate all of those current draws and apply full battery power. I always used the original power feed as my trigger for the relay. Hope that might offer a simple solution.

You scored a beauty of a quad. I'm leaning team Yamaha for durability after seeing Hondas (while very high quality) suffer from malfunctions of their own newer technology. Yamaha just kept it simple for decades and have been very easy to maintain bc of their simplicity.

Like Sparky says, electric start pulls energy from your battery. Or the start switch on the bars is fubar. IE not sending juice everywhere it needs to go. But it runs great and should be a good little machine for motoring around the woods.
@jimmyraymond67Ай бұрын
A trick i learned for putting the leads on those batteries. Single use ear plugs. Stick them under the nut and let expand and it holds in place
@bobpowers9862Ай бұрын
When you use the pull start, you have 100% of the available battery voltage to the spark module. When you are cranking? You likely have less than 10v and that is below the threshold for spark. Put on a good jump pack to test. Alternatively, use a jump pack direct to the starter's terminals, bypassing the OEM battery-to-starter circuit. If it cranks and starts? It's your battery, too weak, too small, or insufficient crank-amps. You could freshen the battery terminals (sandpaper, then dielectric grease). Nice video, though. Worthy of Mustie1 ..! :)

Battery has nothing to do with it. The cdi doesn’t run on the battery. It gets power when the engine turns it’s spinning a magnet around a coil of wire and creating ac power for the cdi. There’s a separate coil that sends a trigger pulse to the cdi. The ignition system is not tied to the battery in any way. Pull the kill wire right at the cdi. I almost guarantee it will start via electric start. You have a short somewhere causing the kill wire to be grounded when the start button is pushed.
@ni_wink84Ай бұрын
@@michaelpreston2392 absolutely agree with this, stator makes power any time it’s spinning fast enough to do so! Giving plenty of spark, something is grounding out in the electric starting circuit

Air filter flange: zip-ties make a good ‘brazing’ filler material to build up that melted flange. If you have a matching diameter pipe, you could wrap it in aluminum foil, insert it into the filter housing and use it as molding surface to build up the flange.

I haven't ridden much, but I like the old 80s stuff better than the new stuff for pure fun factor. When i was 15 I found out why people called the 3 wheelers unsafe, I came to a turn way to hot, braked hard and rolled that Honda. I jumped off, grabbed a little Birch tree to stop myself... And split the entire seam of my pants 😂😂
@PrinceWesterburgАй бұрын
Electric start: I'm sure someone has covered this in the comments BUT; When the starter runs the system voltage drops and thus no spark. This could be a knackered battery or a smoked regulator (If it has one but it has that fancy electrical spark circuit so...) Its worth unplgging and spraying the connectors with WD40 or switch cleaner too as they will have oxcidised over the last 36 years. Great video and lovely to see the forest in autumn! P.S. If you really want some answers, talk to NoNonsenseKnowHow who are also in PA
@michaelpreston2392Ай бұрын
Incorrect! The ignition system is in no way connected to the battery. It’s an AC CDI ignition. It gets its power from the charge coil in the flywheel. There is a short causing the kill wire to be grounded start button is pressed
@joshualester2735Ай бұрын
@@michaelpreston2392 I've had this issue on a bayou and a regulator fixed it. but those bayous absolutely need a battery for spark. and a good one at that. you get under 12v and they start running rough.

Hey Matt my dad and I inherited almost the same old red Yamaha moto 4 from my great grandfather the only difference being wider more cover on the fenders front and back along with a winch with original plow and mount and tool box behind the rear light, he used it to log for fire wood and we still use it to plow our driveway, they are absolute units.

Ha I spent several months in a cast and still have problems to this day from the exact same thing. Had muddy boots I thought I would wash off as I drove through a wide narrow stream. Boots were looking great until I met a large rock. My foot changed directions when the peg met my heal and then flipped on its side to make it over said rock and under the peg. I was in Alaska and just had looked at trail cam footage of a large Grizz in the area. I’m sure if he was any closer he would have really liked watching me flopping around on the ground before he ate me.
