I was raised by a Korean war veteran, I hit about 11 years old all the sudden this routine started in our household that had me mystified because it was like the Presidential fitness campaign on school on steroids and it was at 5:30 every morning. When three military branches showed interest in me upon graduation after my ASVAB test three family members came to me and said they did not want me to invest or go into the services that it was nothing like it was when they were active and that the country was going to s*** this was back in the mid-90s..... I had a laminated ranger handbook on my kitchen table that a family member left for me and I'll never forget the tools they left in place because they had the foresight to see this s*** show coming

Awesome info Pat. My father always taught me to observe when entering any parking spot and always back in if possible. When second's count and you need to exit you already have the jump. I still to this day park way out in the parking lot away from everything and have a 360 view. Always observe your location in a parking lot, I.E. Always have a reference point of where you parked. Same when your in traffic, leave room between yourself and whats in front of you, dont get boxed in. This has become Engrained after 62 years. 😮

As a former firefighter, still current paramedic and safety guy who spent nearly 7 years in Iraq, I struggle with my response to the "paranoid" label from the flaccid and gelatinous types, even people who should definitely know better. The flippant part of me just wants to embrace it and say "yeah, absolutely". But words mean things. Definition of Paranoia: unjustified suspicion and mistrust of other people or their actions. The key word there is "unjustified" and with enough experience, you know that a reasonable suspicion is never unjustified. IYKYK. So, now I just tell people its not a matter of being paranoid, its simply the result of lived experience.

As a Honduran I agree, it definitely depends on the city and your relationship with your community but it is incredible how much a little extra attention does. In fact last week a drugged guy started getting too close to me, probably for some money but point is I was aware of him, took distance which allowed me to see him ACTIVELY going after ME so had time to respond accordingly. Everything was fine.....

Just wanted to add that It's sad how expensive it is to own a legal firearm, 5 times the price of the US, some cases 10 times the price......in one of the poorest countries in the American continent. The license you get by bribing the officers. Let's not even mention how self defense laws are here, you add all these things together and you get that most gun owners have their guns illegally.

When a stop light turns green I always look both ways to make sure someone isn't running a red That TOO has saved my ass ! Lastly as far as having a plan always remember If you have to hit something hit something moving the same direction you are going, next would be something is NOT moving and the LAST thing you ever want to hit is something moving in the opposite direction.

People watch videos all the time of random stuff like a vehicle tire that came off of a vehicle and is just rolling down the road and up onto the sidewalk at a high rate of speed and then BAM! It takes someone or something out!! But then those same people say “That sort of stuff doesn’t happen!”….. like really?!?! You just watched a video of a random runaway tire taking someone out that wasn’t paying attention whilst walking down the sidewalk!!!

"Boss didn't tell us the procedure to alleviate our fears dummy. They did so to protect us, themself and everyone else in the Bldg." Also told owner of the firm & Offc Mgr mainly because my office is right next to the front door and I'm primary gatekeeper but when I'm not there, (sick, vacation, taking a piss et cetera), Complacent Guy was my backup. 9:07 part of the reason for this is that many people get locked into the "pedestrian has the right of way" mindset, so in their self righteous indignation, they forge ahead into the crosswalk (if they even use the crosswalk) without looking both ways, because they have the right of way. Yep they're right, and one day they will be "dead-right". Unfortunately, too many people drive the same way.
