I’ve exhausted this topic to the point of driving my Wife insane. But I come back periodically to make sure I didn’t miss anything. Feels good that I have all these bases covered. One thing to talk about is hardening doors with 3” deck screws and locking mechanisms such as night locks, clamp locks and door armour products.

Love this stuff on being proactive to protect your castle from undesirables. Would love a longer session on this subject! The best criminal interactions is the ones you avoid. Just make your house less desirable than than your neighbors, the same advice my LE detective brother gave me years ago!! Never make it easy or opportunistic for a criminal. I am prepared not paranoid, just like a having a spare tire in my truck I am not paranoid about flat tires!

There used to be a show called "to catch a thief", where a reformed thief went around testing people's security systems. One of the things he would always say was, " Everybody thinks they don't have to worry about thieves in nice neighborhoods. Nice neighborhoods are where theives like to go to steal things because that's where they can get the nicest stuff, and nobody has security systems."

Great info. One easy thing people can do is spend $5 and a couple of hours to install long ass screws in all their exterior door hinges and strike plates to make kicking in the door that much harder. You can buy door armor too, at around $100 per door, and it's that much better, but the screws are easy, cheap, and enhance the "default door" by 100%. I live in BFE Idaho with the closest neighbor 1/4 mile away. When I first moved in, the previous owners, were like most everyone here, never locking their doors and they had no keys to give me because they just lost them and forgot about it. I came from where you lock your doors, and by habit, on the first day, locked myself out of the house at 2200. Instead of calling a locksmith who might not even come out from the city, I decided to try to shoulder a door. I'd never done it before and was expecting to fail. I barely threw any weight into it and blew out the frame, easy peasy.

Knowing your neighbors, and being neighborly is a good way to build a community. We watch each other's stuff. Know what vehicles are supposed to be there, and when. Having nosey neighbors, though a hassle at some times, is fantastic. . Around here, you should have a ground camera, near your door, pointing upwards. Folks these days wear hoodies to cover their face AND they keep their heads down. Even if an overhead light comes on, they keep their heads down. They're getting more savvy around here. Having one down low increases your chances of getting a good image.

I find a great way to keep the "accompanying the AC guy" situation from being awkward is to ask tons of questions. Most people who enjoy what they do, or are experts at it, love to be asked questions (as long as you're not hindering them doing their job.) Like Pat said, you might learn something, and it keeps you from just breathing down their neck the whole time.

I live in a court, and I was up at 5 am on a Saturday to work on my car. There was a car sitting against the curb, idling with two people in it. I called the police non-emergency number to report it. It's unusual for people to be hanging out at 5 am on a Saturday, especially when there's no through traffic. It turns out it was the friend of a tenant in that house. Worst case, I've wasted someone's time. If it was a bad actor, the police might've caught someone with a warrant, or a drunk driver. It may even just contribute to statistics that prompt police to patrol the area more often. They were idling, which is illegal where I live. I made sure to take a picture of the plate, which I was afraid might've started a fight, but better safe than sorry.

My old man who is a retired cop always told me a few things about home security from a young age: 1. Always keep the doors locked; 2. Always keep the lights on at night and when you leave the house during the day keep the radio/tv on to make the home appear occupied; 3. Never open the door for anyone you are not expecting, even the police. Speak through the door and if anyone asks you to open your door, even the police, keep it closed and locked, no matter what. If the police have the right to come in via a search warrant they will bust the door in. Otherwise, tell them that whatever they have to say to you they may reduce to writing and send it through the mail. And home alarms and cameras are great if you can set that up.

Another thing robbers have found out is a high powered laser pointed directly at the camera will literally blind and mask out the camera. If done long enough they can get in and out with what they want while someone just blinds the camera. I’ve tested this on mine and it does work but you have to be still as a fly.

cool. sounds like i'm at about 80%. do the nightly lockdown procedures before i go up to bed: check garage, lock the deadbolt to the door, check the front and back doors; but wasnt checking car locks. wife's car already alerts if the doors are unlocked for too long, but my truck does not. got cameras on the front of the house: Ring at the door that sounds an alert on a "chime" speaker in the house when someone enters the zone of protection i set. got a Wyze cam pointed at front yard to record 24/7 since Ring only records events. got cameras throughout the downstairs of house. so i can see what is happening downstairs from my phone. No cameras at back of house though, but gotta get through locked 6 ft fence to get into back yard. need to leave lights on outside at night though. been meaning to get some smart bulbs that turn on at sunset and turn off at sunrise, so i dont even need to think about the lights. HAD a dog, but he died last year, we're planning on getting another dog in December. so, feeling pretty good about our setup.

Can you put razor wire or even just barb wire coils across your fence top to deter invaders as well as slow down their retreat When your canine ambushes them? I put loose barb wire around my yard , near the house, at night to catch and snag on trespassers' legs. Makes it difficult to creep around. I've used bailing wire to attach soda pop cans containing a few gravel pebbles to make rattles when they get snagged up.
@rawfotra926 Жыл бұрын
@SoldierAndrew will do... at the furthest back fence. Where there is an old abandoned building (crack head haven) we used plywood and drywall screws along the fence. Was worried about the pups getting to it. Turns out theyre smart enough to avoid it. Sometimes i think theyre smarter than me lol... but if L.E sees it I'll have to take it out. Some razor wire is the best option. I'll call my buddy. He may have some laying around his barn.

#1: German Shepherd. Nobody can sneak up on your house. Period. Bad guys will pick a different target. #2: A simple plan to defend your house in the event someone is determined enough to break into your house, get past your dog, and shows intent to do further harm. Take advantage of Smarthome systems, like Apple HomeKit. Sensors and cameras are super cheap. Security automations are only limited by your imagination.

He barks at it. If we go outside and my wife's vehicle is not there. He barks. If he sees a limb lying on the ground he birddogs it. Lawnmower in the yard instead of the shed. Birddog.
