Six Color Urban Sketching Palette from M Graham Watercolors

Someone asked me what 6 colors I would pick from the M Graham Watercolor range for an urban sketching palette and here is my answer!

Hi Alice! love your color choices, but I think a brown like burnt sienna would make better grays than the raw sienna ;)

I didn’t include it cos i thought i could make one with raw sienna and perm alizarin crimson. But I did consider it at first!

My base limited palette for landscape/urban is yellow ochre (go for a transparent), burnt sienna (or trans red oxide), ultramarine blue, and quin magenta. It's easier to tone down colors than try to brighten dull ones and this gives you gorgeous greys either warm or cool. It's also an inexpensive palette, none of them are rare and all are available in any brand. If I have room I like to add sepia or burnt umber, cad red and yellow (you could do transparents if you wish), and cerulean blue. One more that I find very useful is davy's grey, it's concrete/tin in a tube.

@@eurekawanders The yellow is the ochre (PY42 or 43.. 42 tends to be more transparent).. it mixes green unlike raw sienna. I love raw sienna in a sky (nothing else gives those glowing, backlit clouds that are so gorgeous) but it's just not as versatile. You can use the ochre in a sky you just have to be a bit careful not to mix it directly with the blue wet in wet... but you can't get green from raw sienna unless you pull in something super strong like phthalo blue and even then it's iffy. That base palette will do all the hues, just in a muted, soft version. The ultramarine and magenta are pure enough to give pops of purple, pink, blue for foliage or colorful dawn/dusk skies. Ochre and b. sienna give a gold hue, ochre and magenta an earth red through peachy orange, sienna and magenta almost a perylene maroon shade. It's very easy to work with as it never produces colors that clash yet you can paint almost anything with it, I've even done florals and animals.... portraits are beyond my skill but it would do that too with tons of beautiful skin tones producible. The burnt sienna and ultramarine are mixing complementaries so you can go from a cooler brown to warm grey, neutral grey, blue grey, indigo, etc through the spectrum... and depending on your pb29 lots of granulation is possible. I use the WN Davy's (it contains the traditional slate pigment) but several other brands are making it these days, you can mix it to try with white, black, and a tiny touch of green. It's a bit of a pain to mix, and I don't keep white typically, so the tube is convenient if you paint a lot of concrete or tin.

I think I would choose Hansa Yellow Deep, Quinacridone Rust, Permanent Alizarin Crimson, Azo Green, Indian Yellow, Phthalocyanine Blue (Green Shade)....but it is so hard for me to pick just 6....though these are some of my very favourites!
