This is my home park and I feel lucky to have such a great collection. I'd also recommend for everyone to get food outside of the park. There are a ton of options available nearby and I usually end up going to the Gurnee Mills Mall which is nice and has a good food court.

It's one of the most well rounded lineups anywhere. Underrated, but because there are only 3 coasters over 2 minutes long out of the 15. Great flats too. Focus on getting water rides back up to snuff and food options I'd say. Dream addition is a vekoma Bermuda blitz or wildcat. But Bull ops are elite, Superman not so much.

We made our first visit on Sunday and Memorial Day and fell in love with the park. It was shockingly not crowded either day & we easily rode all 15 coasters with multiple rerides on the Big 4. The only negative was that the drop tower & several other flat rides were down. I respectfully disagree about Goliath being one of the worst RMCs, we loved it and I put it ahead of several RMCs. And Viper was the surprise hit of the trip. I wasn't expecting much but thought it was the 5th best in the park.

Great review! I've been going to this park since the early 80s when it was Marriot's Great America. The American Eagle, the Whizzer, and the Demon have been there as long as I can remember. Batman is still a great coaster. Raging Bull is probably my fav, with X-Flight getting pretty close. Goliath was pretty intense and enjoyable. I did miss the Orbit, a great spinning ground ride that eventually gets you upside down. The Lobster is still there, which has a special place in my heart, and I am thrilled that my son (who visited for the 1st time yesterday) says it was his favorite ride. Speaking of our visit yesterday, no need for a Flash Pass for us. Skipped Superman (not my fav), The Flash/Vertical Velocity (another I'm not too fond of), and The Joker (not sure about those 4D coaster things). The park definitely wasn't at full operation capacity as lots of the kiosks, games, and food areas weren't operating, but a vast majority of rides were operating, aside from the water rides and the kids coasters. I agree with your assessment of the kids areas. There were some, but when I was a kid, there was a fairly large Looney Tunes themed area that has since disappeared. I also think they need a revamp of their water rides. They weren't running yesterday, but the Loggers run (I do enjoy it), and the Yankee Clipper (now named Aquaman-something, I guess), and the Roaring Rapids have been there for a looong time. Perhaps there are some new water rides out there.

I think it's one of few Six Flags parks where a giga would make sense, if they could afford it and find space for it. Ideally it would be from Intamin since they already have a B&M hyper. This would not only be a standout, but also a high-capacity attraction, which this park needs.
@CanobieCoaster2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't mind a B&M giga since the layout would be a lot different than Raging Bull, but I doubt Six Flags would spend all that on just one ride.

8:44 Yep, the back row on Raging Bull is the only row worth riding. Visited SFGAm on Frday 6/24/22. Solid ride lineup + appreciated being able to ride a B&M Wing at Six Flags, but experienced disappointing ops relative to the other top-tier Six Flags parks, and not close to the same league as the ops at the Ohio Cedar Fair parks. SFGAm had weeds growing everywhere, disinterested/rude employees, trouble keeping rides open, slow ops - e.g. 4-minute dispatches on Raging Bull, etc. SFGAm's Flash Pass system malfunctioned too, with the wait time to access the Flash Pass line on a Gold Flash Pass exceeding the regular wait time for non-Flash Pass customers on most rides. The Flash Pass line operators didn't mind, and while the supervisor at the Flash Pass office confessed the system was broken that day, she claimed there was nothing she could do as Six Flags controls the wait times listed on the Flash Pass app. Even when Flash Pass works at SFGAm, the merge points on most rides are unfavorable compared to other Six Flags parks, e.g. you can wait another 30 minutes for Goliath with Flash Pass, and that's after the delay to access the line with Flash Pass. This was frustrating coming from riding Steel Vengeance the day before with its TSA-style security that only took 20 minutes with Cedar Point's Fast Lane, and being accustomed to Iron Rattler at SFFT (a better RMC than Goliath) that has a 2 minute wait on average with Flash Pass. Comparing apples-to-apples, Flash Pass at SFGAm gets you onto Batman in 20-25 minutes due to the merge point, but at Six Flags Fiesta Texas, the Flash Pass for their Batman clone puts you right into the front row of the station. I have literally walked on, without stopping, to the front row of the Batman clone at Six Flags Fiesta Texas using the Flash Pass system there. Not possible at SFGAm. They're charging a premium for a lackluster product. As a non-local, it's difficult justifying SFGAm as a destination when Six Flags has better-run options like Great Adventure, Magic Mountain, and Fiesta Texas, all of which also have other worthwhile parks nearby. We got frustrated enough with SFGAm on Friday, we left early, toured Kenosha, ate at the wonderful Chick-Fil-A there, and took pictures at the infamous sights of that mostly peaceful town. Good times!

I'm sure you noticed that Camp Cartoon used to be themed to other Warner Bros properties - the bus ride there still has the Mystery Machine paint job and Sprocket Rockets used to be named Spacely's Sprocket Rockets and themed to The Jetsons. I'd love to see those IPs return but there's a snowball's chance in hell of that happening these days, so I guess retheming those rides to Looney Tunes would be the next best thing. The most underrated part of Great America's coaster lineup is its place in history. American Eagle was one of Intamin's earliest large rides, Demon and Whizzer are both iconic rides from their respective manufacturers, and the patronage this park gave B&M early on cannot be understated - 1st B&M stand-up, 1st B&M invert (that spawned an industry craze and like 10 copies of that very layout), and the 2nd B&M hyper. Goliath was only RMC'S 2nd bottom-up coaster too. Fright Fest at Great America is a nightmare in the worst way. The only day that had manageable waits anytime past 1pm when I went last year was Columbus Day, and only for about 2 hours before the sky opened up and the rain came down in sheets. Even then, I spent 45 minutes in line for my membership skips, so I probably only saved maybe 20 minutes on Superman and Goliath. One or two more concurrent flash pass staff would do wonders, though if they've switched their skip redemption system to the same web-based one used at the Texas parks then that should mitigate that problem this season.

Yes this park's history is amazing. Seeing Camp Cartoon stripped of the IPs was sad to see.

I visited this park once in 2021. I only got the chance to ride Raging Bull, Goliath, XFlight, Vertical Velocity, Joker, Dark Knight and a couple of flat rides (all of this was with a gold flash pass). It’s a nice park but it was really crowded. Nice review!

@mitchellries2562 жыл бұрын
I learned that the hard way during my first visit in 2013. We thought we should do X-Flight because it was still their newest ride at the time and we thought we should do Raging Bull next because I heard it wa their most popular ride in the park but instead it was Superman: Ultimate Flight with a 90 minute wait. It was so busy that day that we decided to come back a second day during the week we were in Chicago. And even though I wasn't a fan of making Hurricane Harbor a seperate park entirely, that might be slightly beneficial now because it was also extremly busy when first there and they do have enough to keep you busy for a full day.

So many new things at this park since the last time I was there, probably '94 or '95 or something like that. So many old rides I grew up on that are no longer there. So many great memories though. My dad worked for Quaker Oats and they had their employee/family picnic here in the 80's so we always got in for free, although I think a day pass back then cost like $14 or $15. The last time I was there I think it was like $26. The Whizzer, The Demon, The Tidal Wave, The American Eagle, The Shockwave, The Edge, The Batman ride, The Yankee Clipper, and Logger's Run, is what I remember most. They tore down the Tidal Wave and The Edge while I was still frequenting the park back in the day, I think because some people got seriously injured on the Tidal Wave and in the case of The Edge, someone even died falling out of the ride. That was the rumor anyway. I remember people used to stick their used gum on the walls while waiting in line for the Demon ride. That was a thing alot of kids did, don't ask me why. In highschool, I made out with my girlfriend on the Sky Whirl. Growing up in the suburbs of Chicago, Great America was always conveniently located, just a half hour to 45 minute drive for us, so you bought a season pass and went there 2 or 3 times per summer and it paid for itself because you knew that living close by meant it was feasible for you to get back several times during a summer. It was worth it. I think I remember that the Chicagoland area grocery chain, Dominick's, sold discount tickets to the park as well. We never bought tickets at the front entrance of the park, but I don't even think that grocery chain is around anymore, but I haven't lived in Illinois for 21 years now, so IDK. You take these experiences for granted when you are going through them as a kid, but you absolutely cherish the memory of them when you get older. It takes me to a good place in my mind. I need to get back to this place if for no other reason than nostalgic purposes.

We took our first trip here the Tuesday and Wednesday following Memorial Day. There were about 30 school buses each day for their end of year field trip. In some instances, it didn’t feel too crowded, but it ultimately was due to all the ride closures. Without the buses, it would have been perfect. I wish the park had just been closed to the public instead. We were very disappointed that Maxx Force, Whizzer, V2, Little Dipper, and Sprocket Rockets were all closed, and X Flight had one train ops (possibly Superman as well). V2 was closed & operating, but appeared to be filming a commercial. We had fun, but I may have had too high of hopes for this park. SFOT has been doing so many renovations around the park that it made this one look a little run down at the front and other areas. Combined with the closures and not being able to ride Batman & Joker, I was a little disappointed. It may take 2-3 years, but I will give it another shot.

I like the coaster lineup, but I hate the huge crowds this park draws. It does make sense, since it's the only real amusement park to service both Chicago & Milwaukee areas. Even if it were a weak lineup, it would still draw crowds just as large. I visited in October 2016, summer 2017, & then finally a multi-day trip in 2019. The waterpark was an upcharge in 2017 & 2019, although it was included with season passes, not just memberships. People without either were being charged an extra $10 in 2019. The huge crowds made for very long lines to get through security, even on weekdays. Parking an hour early wasn't good enough. Maxx Force had an hour long wait 30 minutes prior to park opening. After securing a couple rides on my arrival night, I would bypass it at the start and come back later, since the line got a little shorter midday, but you're right about the breakdown concerns for anyone who hasn't ridden it. The single rider lines that they had at the time helped with some of the rides. I was able to manage the crowds, but I can see this park being a miserable visit if not managed well.
@CanobieCoaster2 жыл бұрын

It's a very solid park with a great coaster line up. It's sort of like the Kings Island of the Six Flags chain. Unfortunately, Chicago needs another large park. Chicagoland is a huge metro area and this park just gets way too busy. And it's not just because the park is great, it's because the local alternatives are minimal. That said, I'd say Phoenix, Arizona and Houston, Texas have a greater need for a nearby large park.

@@mitchellries256 I know you weren't asking me, but I'm planning a trip to kings island this summer. My guess is I'll like kings island more just based on the lesser crowds lol.
@zacg_2 жыл бұрын
@@mitchellries256 I think Kings Island is a nicer park overall but that's mostly about atmosphere. I think it benefits from its wooded location (though Great America does have a lot of trees) and it also benefits from the fact that Cedar Fair owns it. What I mean by that is that Cedar Fair just takes more care to make things look nice and avoids areas with bland concrete, chain linked fences and ugly back stage areas being visible. They also don't have the advertisements like Six Flags. When it comes to ride line up I think they are basically on par with each other. Their coasters aren't really identical but they have many similar flavors and the quality is roughly equal overall. Their family rides and flat rides are fairly comparable though I think Kings Island has a slight edge. So for me it has to come down to atmosphere and that gives Kings Island the win. That said, I still agree that within their respective chains they are fairly analogous.
@mitchellries2562 жыл бұрын
@@zacg_ That's a very good point. I enjoyed the ride lineup at Six Flags Great America just a little bit more and I sort of felt the theming in areas like the Southwest Territory were better than anything Kings Island. And I also liked the waterpark at Great America more but I was very unhappy when they started charging a seperate fee for that and making a seperate gate certainly didn't help at all. The truth is it's so close between the two that my opinions could easily go back and forth after future visits to both.

Great America also gets really big crowds because it's the only major park in the Chicago area. The closest ones otherwise are Indiana Beach (which is tiny and 2+ hours away) and the parks at Wisconsin Dells, which are 2 hours the other way. I'm not sure I see a Sky Screamer coming to the park because it has a height restriction of about 200 feet (Raging Bull needed a waiver to be 203), and I don't see the chain adding one that isn't the world's tallest *tied with 5 other parks in the chain*. Jim Reid-Anderson really saw the vision of what Great America could be and he got along really well with Hank Salemi from what I understand so he dumped some major investment into Great America. That really got a lot of people's attention and I really don't think the park is as underrated as they used to be I think a lot more people realize and understand how good the park is. Now that Hank has passed away Jim is no longer the CEO, let's hope that the Legacy will continue.

Grew up in Milwaukee so this was always my home park. I have a love hate relationship with the park. The fact that every single ride they build is a quick duration ride pisses me off. Every ride seems to last 30 seconds. Raging Bull is probably my favorite ride. The backseat first drop is the best first drop ive ever been on. Too bad the ride has trim breaks, would be perfect otherwise. Haven't rode Maxxforce yet. Yes the lines are long. But yes there's a lot of different rides. Would prefer they spend no money on upgrades for the park until they have the money for a long duration intense coaster.

Here we are, my home park, like everything I said in your top 15 rides at SFGAM, this park has something for everyone. 15 coasters makes a fantastic collection. As none of the coasters are super elite and kinda mediocre for the type they are, it makes up for it as having so many of them, so many things to do. Raging Bull is a fantastic hyper that's better than Mako in my opinion. Goliath is defiantly one of the worst RMCs built but I mean, its still and RMC. American Eagle is one of the smoothest wooden coasters iv ridden nonmatter how much you disagree. And Viper is amazing. And so much more. I love to have this as my home park. All they need is something truly elite like a raptor or RMC Eagle or something.
@CanobieCoaster2 жыл бұрын
I didn't find Eagle rough. I more found the ride to have poor pacing between the helix and return trip.
@Marty_NZ2 жыл бұрын
I disagree with you about Goliath. I've just done a 25 day USA coaster roadtrip. Added Iron Rattler, Wonder Woman, Iron Gwazi, Lightning Rod, Twisted Timbers, Jersey Devil and another revisit to Magic Mountain for Twisted Colossus rerides. Goliath is definitely not the worst RMC. If i look past the short layout i'd say it's mid to top tier in my rankings. I thought my opinion would change after getting on these other RMCs but for example it's better than Lightning Rod in how it currently runs unfortunately. American Eagle is awesome for its age.
