A few people mentioned after my recent video on the Vintage Kenner Six Million Dollar Man Bionic Transport and repair station video that I had missed out the lens in the microscope. This video is an update on that project and shows that very missing part and how to replace it.

For what it’s worth, your replacement lens is of much better quality and higher magnification than the original. Which I vaguely remember as being particularly soft and scratched up.

Hi Dave, a great update. I have an original magnifier in my BTRS but this is a great option as the magnifiers are very often missing. This is definitely clearer than an original one, and probably does have a slightly longer focal length to it as well but a good replacement part. The eye in these figures is not meant to magnify. This is even mentioned in the later versions of the instruction sheets that came with the figures so I guess that Kenner and Denys Fisher got lots of complaints from people thinking that it did magnify things back in the day. It is actually a wide angle lens and will make things slightly smaller when viewed through it.

Wow! This set looks absolutely awesome, Dave. Is there not, however, the potential that this magnifying lens, combined with direct sunlight, might become something more akin to Goldfinger's laser, torching poor Col. Steve Austin in his slumber?

The lens actually made his face pretty large. I had the rocket ship as a kid and I can remember using it to magnify things, not just Steve Austin. I don't recall the clarity, though. Unfortunately, I gave it away during the 1990s when we moved to a different house. Now I wish I had kept it, along with Steve Austin as they were some of my favorite toys prior to Star Wars.

As you say and Adrew Taylor in these comments, I doubt the original worked as well or was made from glass. Amazing what you can find on Ebay. But no internet in the mid 70's shocks and amazes kids today including my 30 year old Nephew.

Another thing that is often overlooked on these sets as they age is the x-ray function. Originally the images were glow in the dark. But as they have aged the "hidden" image is now much darker and is visible all the time. I recall it did not take long for this to happen just a year or so from when they were new

I don't remember my X-Ray glowing _at all_ - and I would have done if it had, because I was obsessed with GITD things as a child. Must have been very poor quality.

I had this as a child and you what I don’t remember ever figuring out how to set it up. Maybe when my brother and first got it since he was 7 years old but as I played with it later I never knew how to reassemble it. So looking at all set up looks pretty cool.

I like to fix using my modelling and making skills. It means more people can have a go at the repairs themselves. 3D printing would make for quite dull videos 😎

Your replacement is unquestionably an upgrade. I can just about picture the kind of plastic lens the original was, from the photo. There was a tiny but flat rim around the magnifying part, and pretty sure they were 'rare' prizes in some vending machine assortments. Possibly in some cheap 'pocket' or 'travel' kits. You might find an unrelated one sooner or later, but your found one fits and works, and that's what counts.
