That last point on the colors changing is so good. It's something I hadn't even considered

This is probably the best video on OSL I've ever seen. Very informative and straight to the point. I would absolutely love to see a similar video about NMM, as I finally started to practice it myself and you are very good at it. In any case, thanks a lot for this one.

Thank you so much! I think I'm certainly so a NMM video at some point.. 😀

Point 2: The further away the light is, the weaker the light becomes. It actually becomes weaker in a very specific way: 1 divided by distance squared (1/d^2). What's important about this is that it's not a linear relation, but a squared relation. Light gets weaker faster closer to the source, but gets weaker slowly farther away from the source. Qualitatively, this means bright highlights should be concentrated very close to the source, but dim highlights should progress much farther away from the source than you might expect, and there should actually be very few, if any, medium highlights.

I am embarrassed to ask this question.....but here goes ..... Can I use my airbrushes for model & miniature painting with a full-size, 5HP, 80 gallon air-compressor? I know how wild this sounds, but it’s the only compressor in my garage & my Father used it years ago to paint cars. Is there some kind of accessory-adapter that I could attach in order to use lower PSI & use my airbrushes? Your reply is greatly appreciated. Jaime
@Sorastro6 ай бұрын
Hi Jaime! Please never be embarrassed to ask questions (not to me anyway). My answer is that I don't actually know tbh - I'm really not that knowledgeable when it comes to airbrushes and compressors etc. It might be ok for basic priming duties, and zenithal highlights etc, provided the airbrush physically attached to the compress ok..? 😀

I'm considering painting a Legion CIS army with primarily Object-Sourced Lighting, during a thematic night-time battle. I have searched for tutorials and references of low-light miniature painting but can't find anything. The goal I'm searching for is a low-light, darker look similar to that of the Clone Wars, CIS invasion of Dathomir. I do think that I have the OSL figured out now, but I wonder how to simulate darkness, and a lower light setting.. Should I just paint with a darker paint-scheme? 1. How would one go about, painting miniatures as if not exposed to daylight/bright light? 2. Do you have any references for night-time OSL painting? Im thankful for all tips & tricks!

Oh wow, that sounds dramatic and fun! The nearest thing I've tried to something like that would be my Prologue Survivors for Kingdom Death: Monster: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fXfRnaWVr6tqqLcsi=OCnkq9b97mByhpVW You could try something similar, but go for a more reddish/orange ambience of course for Dathomir. Whatever you do, be bold, and commit! 😀

I love this video. While the “usual” Sorastro videos are what I come for, these “informational” or “theory based” videos are just icing on the cake. This, the Revisiting Hulk video and the Scenery videos are just wonderful. Thank you so much.

Incredible video. So nice to meet you (though you may have shown your face in other videos before this, that I have not seen). You've been na close friend in my adventure of painting a SW Legion Rebel Army. You've made me feel like painting high quality miniatures was within reach (and it was!) to someone who is just getting started. Keep up the good work.

OSL is always a technique I want to incorporate more but am always hesitant to apply because it can be quite difficult to pull off convincingly or it could ruin progress quite easily. Fantastic and informative video, mate! Thank you!

Really helpful tips. I tend to have trouble with OSL and creating certain effects. You should totally do a video on the best workspace to paint in. Like showing what to buy for your workspace and what not to but

Shadows of light appear sharper near the direct light sorce, leaving more contrasted, stark and crisper shadows. The father the light moves from the sorce, the more diffuse the shadows get :)

As for OSL I start with the white to black values using an airbrush first. Then painting my brightest colors transparent and going heavier opaque with colors in shadows. This allows for the brightest color to set a standard so I know none of my other color mixed paints should match brightness in value. Also the most saturated any color will ever be will be straight out of the bottle. You won't be able to mix a color more saturated than the manufacturer. Typically the less mixing = the more purely saturated a color will be.
@Sorastro7 ай бұрын
Absolutely! Great tips, Ian 😀

I'm definitely no expert in OSL, but the last point you brought up is something I keep coming back to, and has made me consider trying some sort of sunset/sunrise diorama, for the interesting colour choices it could lead to.
