So here’s a story. When playing western province u19s in 2011, Damian de Allende stole a drink I’d just ordered at the bar I kicked off in an explosive manner. I was very strapped for cash. To the point where we got into an altercation. Before I knew what happened siya literally carried me down to the bottom end of the bar and apologised on behalf of the senior players, replaced my order out of his own pocket and quelled my anger to the point where I spent most of the night talking to him about rugby. I can’t elaborate how beautiful this man is as a human, immense rugby player of course. But most importantly an amazing leader and man.

I’m South African, but I’m hearing this story with a different frame of mind. We take for granted the hardships and Siya’s story should emphasize what he’s saying that a success story shouldn’t be celebrated because of the kind of Siya and Makazole’s hardship for children in SA and the world over. Children shouldn’t be going through that at all.

That story about the neighborhood watch in a Cape Town suburb cut deep. One of the first things I experienced when I moved to Cape Town. Searched and searched by the cops, and when they found nothing....not so much as an apology. Not even an explanation for what I was suspected of. It is the most humiliating thing to go through in your own country of birth.

Nah, that's just testosterone hahah. What makes Siya great is his foresight to split Leadership Between Himself, Eben, Duane, Handre, Steven and Lukhanyo each with their own responsibilities. Each of those players could be captain but wouldn't you rather have all of them as leaders than just one.

Thanks for this interview lads, sadly we do have a lot of poverty in South Africa, a lot of it caused by corrupt politicians which just doesn't seem to come under any scrutiny from the international community. Siya is a good man, and even if he's not out best player, he's a great leader.

He did annoy me when he claimed he felt disrespected by the refs In Erasmus video. I imagine it led to making life harder for refs. What does anyone think?

Based on World Rugby's decision and Nic Berry getting an award in Aus after the Lions tour, I don't think it made any difference, to be honest.

Well maybe rather than it annoying you, it might give you pause as to what they really experienced on the field. And if that makes it harder for refs maybe that should be on Mr. Berry? Why should they stay quiet about a bad apple? He really came off as an arrogant, dismissive authoritarian. That is not good for the name of rugby or the good refs out there.
@ben4216
@ben4216 2 жыл бұрын
Mr Berry is a bad apple. Are you 100% sure of this? Maybe he isn't. Maybe he tries his hardest. When rugby players take to the field there is an unspoken agreement that they know not every decision will be right. They may feel under or over respected. I imagine the refs do have different levels of respect for different players depending on how they carry themselves. It seems a few SA rugby fans have a victim mentality when in actual fact Kolisi and Erasmus were held in the utmost highest regard. They certainly were by me after I saw Rassie crying describing the life of Mapimpi. Winning or losing or good and bad decisions by the ref etc is not what rugby is about. It is deeper than that and when you make an hour long video basically calling the ref a cheat and possibly a racist it harms everything beautiful about the game. I'd like to see if anyone agrees with me. I think O'Gara feels the same. It was a great shame for the sport of rugby and the high respect in which the SA team were held.
