Acoustic foam. I think it’s mainly for dampening the ringing. You still get the natural feel of the drum head but it tends to sound less ringy and overplayed and instead you get a nice short boom sound

the kit that sjc drums sells for him is all maple... and its absolute trash. this kit actually looks like it would be worth the price, why don't they sell this one?

You said it yourself, it’s worth the price. Acrylic shells are expensive for the average person, especially with the whole wrap thing they did for this one. Might as well just order your own custom shells at that point.
