The space shuttle worked as designed as did the SRBs. They were operated way out of thermal design spec due to some greedy bastards at NASA. I suspect infrequent oil changes in the engine's past had some effect on the longevity of this o-ring.

I believe this design only came in the E55's and newer cars that came after 03. The S class W210 and CL W215 had a much better oil pump design. The collector was a part of the pump rather than separately being mounted.

webnothing That's why Europe is full of Mercedes cars with 500,000 to 1,000,000 km's on the clock running like brand new? I don't think I sat in a Mercedes taxi in my life that had less than 500,000 km's on it. I love how tards always like to take one bad example and then shit all over the whole brand, while ignoring millions of examples that prove that the opposite of their belief is true.

For people that haven't seen the previous videos, keep in mind this is a time attack car. I've been using it on the track for the past two years so its been through a lot more stress than most other E55's My point is that if it happened on this car it might happen on other E55's later down the road, and without an oil pressure sensor or switch there's no way to tell when something like this happens. Its something that could have been easily prevented had I known in time, so Its worth pointing out to others so they don't fall for the same thing.

A lot of confidence the designers put on that tiny o'ring. This is simply a design flaw. They could have easily implemented an auto shutdown system in case of low or no oil pressure together with an indicator and warning light. Excellent video, unfortunate occasion.

Interesting. My guess is that the o ring was cut during installation. It's also my guess the redundancy of the Benz design allowed the engine to survive during normal use even though the pump was cavitating. It's probably the competition use that pushed the conditions (high rpm / hp demand, hot / thin oil, g-forces further compromising oil pickup, and so on) beyond the rod bearing's ability to cope. #5 rod is the furthest rod from the pump supply, so this kind of goes along with the cut seal line of thought. Sorry for your troubles, btw.

@paulmanson253
@paulmanson253 6 жыл бұрын
A Few points your very good video brings back from memory. 1)For many years race car mechanics have installed a big red warning light to warn the driver of oil pressure failure. A gauge is a good idea,but belt and suspenders here. When driving,keep it simple,you will not be concentrating on gauges. 2)Various race car parts houses sell different designs of oil accumulator,some with the idea of a driver actuated ball valve for a last ditch way to supply oil for a few moments anyway. A good idea here. Try Summit Racing for a start. 3) I would be pissed. At the very least,contact Mercedes-Benz with a polite but very firm letter,paper not electronic. How dare they allow a point source of failure like this. Since it is not backed up with an appropriate idiot light,they are the idiots here. Any American lawyer worth his salt would rub his hands at a potential class action lawsuit here. You will not be the only individual affected here. I would be enraged,not philosophical. Racing does indeed improve the breed. 4) Fix this so that there is a better pipe seal than just one O ring. That is just plain stupid. Is there any way you can install an A/N fitting instead of the O ring ? Even if it means modifying the end of the pipe as well. Good luck with your next engine,and for God's sake,go through it with a fine tooth comb. Happy track time in future.

Larry Wilmore Hmm. Perhaps you are right. I suppose the real issue here is to put pressure on the engineering team supervisors not to be stupid with point source failure without warning light backup. Particularly that there is an on board computer capable of decision making in so many hundreds of microseconds. When 1981 model year rolled around and the on board became a reality,there was much talk of 'limp home mode ' . A solenoid could be empowered to trigger the emptying of an accumulator of oil.big warning light,timer,voice,limited power,and things I cannot think of that brighter boys with training can. If I can think of this,the fact that MB has not done some or all is more than bean counting. They should be ashamed of themselves. Look at the complexity of that disassembled engine compared to the 1955 revolutionary Chevy small block. The process engineering required to create the production line much less the engine is something they should be proud of. Not that many decades ago,an F1 engine was less complex. Point source failure is an embarrassment the militaries of the world have been tinkering for many decades. How dare MB allow that here. The more pressure on them the better.

And spare replacement engines properly torn-down and upgraded ready to install. If you can find the smoking gun of engines -mb and others - you have a huge future ! Great 👍 catch.

i have to ask: what weight oil were you running during track use? did you know that the recommended oil for daily/normal use is wholly inadequate for track duty/continuous high speed operation and will thin to the point of allowing the damage you are seeing? it's not the fault of the pump. the factory on the other hand most likely didn't advise accordingly. the reason i bring this up is that this is not the first time i have seen this happen with mercedes engines.

The way you pronounce "cylinder" is really distracting me for some reason. Never heard anyone pronounce it like that, but I kind of like it. It makes me a bit angry that an o-ring, something that probably costs pennies, is the reason for an entire being utterly destroyed. It's like a house being burned down because of a single loose wire in one electrical outlet that was caused because of vibration from people walking over time. This is one reason I hate modern engines. There is so many parts, so much complexity, little things could be overlooked and those little things could destroy the engine.

Very good tear down. Apparently Mercedes sourced their O-rings from the same place NASA did with the Challenger space shuttle.

jrbuch ideally all rubber type parts should be replaced every couple of years. That'd cost a fortune no doubt.

Great video! So it's a must to change those oil pump O rings when the external oil level sensor starts to lick. I have a 2002 Saab 9-3 with 120k miles, and recently changed all the gaskets, O Rings, etc and I conclude it's the time, the old of the car who plastifies the rubber O rings on the engines and-, of course-, the heat and cold cycles. Also it's a good idea before stops a turbo or intercooled engine to let it COOL down, this way we allow the oil to cool and help those O rings to keep in good shape, but time has no mercy on the rubber, that's why tires manufacturers reccomend to change them, cause they are "old", even if they looks good..

Absolutely a great video! Here is my solution! When your MB engine gets older, use a seal conditioner in the oil along with a quart of Motorkote to stop the heat of friction. Of course your application is racing, and most racing engines are torn down after so mile hrs and cycles. So, I would think the average MB owner would see a good o-ring for many more miles.

That's astounding that the engineers did not design an oil pressure sensor into the system. Especially on a high-performance engine like this. My W116 has an oil line that runs to the pressure gauge in the dash - super simple, easy to read. It seems that Mercedes vehicles would be invincible without their rubber components - O-Rings, Harmonic Balancer, Engine Mounts, Suspension Bushings, Air Springs - all common problems and all due to the degradation of the rubber compound. And, apparently, the oil system :( Great video but sorry this happened to you. Keep up the excellent work!

putting rubber O rings between any liquid connections in extreme environments is a fail, but they do it just for that reason anyways, so that they can fix it or sell you a new car.

What awesome forensic work on this. To be honest an Oil Pressure warning would probably come too late, but to have it come on and have a mechanic tell you that it's going to cost upwards of $2Grand to replace the $3.00 O Ring, maybe they left the pressure sensor off on purpose.

Great vid, one of my favorite cars. Towards the end of the vid you do mention oil temp. gauge. All through the vid. I kept thinking that you should have added an oil temperature gauge, oil pressure gauge and better oil cooler since you are using the car for time attack. Hard lesson to learn, costly too. Looking forward to your new engine. Stay safe, keep the vids coming.

Built in obsolescence a deliberate design car killer like under the rear windscreen on a w126, it is not the first owner but the second third or forth that gets a catastrophic fail, that should of had three O rings with ptfe raped in the voids between the middle one and would be good for a million k. Thanks for the work and a very good thing to know .

Good info, thank you. Awesome troubleshooting. This is a dilemma for any engines older than "X" years, as most o-ring be it EPDM, Buna, FFKM, Viton, Silicone and what not...have a finite life. I think it will be much safer if we can tear down the engine and replace all o-rings , gaskets and whatever non metallic seals in the engine per "X" years., for those with duty as critical as the -o-ring on your oil pump pick up tube.This will be timed based preventive maintenance no user manual will tell us , but we know it is needed...eventually. I usually change all hoses related to cooling system before it reaches 10 years, or sooner, depending on visual check, but limit is 10 years max. These hoses can be inspected visually without tearing up the engine, that is the lucky part. However, I usually sell my car before its 10th year. I agree the oil pump and pan design in your E55 is scary. I mean, usually we see oil pump being submerged in oil bath and not positioned that high. Also oil pick up pipe with an o-ring like that instead of flanged connection with screws and say paper based gasket or copper gasket. Hope you get your engine fixed fast. Thanks again for sharing.

What the hell were they thinking when they designed that thing? Bad enough to use an O-RING to seal the pickup tube (many engines will have them press-fit in with a retaining clamp so they're permanently sealed), but then that pan. I guess the body engineers couldn't be bothered to give them two more inches under the pan to get rid of the front scavenging section.
