Here’s my translation and performance (with my wife at the end) of the great Palästinalied, this time in Old English. I’ve tried to use cognates of the original Middle High German text, not only because the words are beautiful but also to illustrate just how close German and English were once upon a time. @@gyrow1684 I think everyone should be proud of their ancestry, I'm not only English but also have French and Middle Eastern in me but I'm mostly in love with my English culture, history, our country and our monarchy, it's something that is naturally apart of some people. others may not care about their ancestry and that's okay, also most traditional English people you meet are very proud of their heritage, it's deeply rooted in us.

@@tfan2222how so? Old Norse changed some sentence structure but old English and old Norse are already so similar that I’d argue Norman French made significantly more impact on the English language we speak today.

⁠@@ethanpeeler3147Old Norse and Old English being so similar is exactly *why* it changed English so much. Norman French only introduced more foreign vocabulary; most of which is to this day kept for only scientific or scholarly use. 85% or more words on a page written in English are native. The only major thing French did was that it introduced a ‘formal v. informal’ “you” distinction, which had not previously existed, and is what led to the ceased usage of “thou” as a pronoun in English. But then, how is it that Old Norse affected English so much? Well, to start, Old Norse confusion over bits of English was one way, the best example being that we use ‘-s’ instead of the native ‘-eth’ as a result of Norse speakers conflating the 2nd person singular ending ‘-est’ with the 3rd person singular ending ‘-es.’ This is because in Old Norse, the 2nd and 3rd person singular endings were identical. The 3rd person plural pronoun ‘they’ is 100% Old Norse in origin (though the slang “‘em” is actually from native “hem!”). Further, in much a similar way to the Old English and Old Norse being similar enough to cause confusion, the fact that so many words were intelligible but not their grammatical endings led to the erosion (and eventually deletion) of English case and noun declensions and conjugation, a process that started north and spread south. Further than all of this, Old Norse also affected English pronunciation in a few ways. The most notable example is the first person pronoun ‘I.’ Old English had ‘iċ,’ but the north had ‘ik’ which was further reinforced (and spread from there) by Old Norse speakers (who had ‘ek’). This /k/ weakened into a /ç/ and eventually disappeared entirely, resulting in a lengthening of the vowel which would eventually turn into modern ‘I.’ Now, it should all be noted that this happened because there was no longer a standard for English, and the dominant dialect shifted to the Anglian (and specifically, Mercian) dialects; the ones most exposed to Old Norse. This only happened due to the Norman invasion, so in a way, the Norman invasion itself is responsible, but Norman French? Far from it.

I didnt think it was possible to top your own Jorsalam but here I am proven wrong. This is the Greatest non-German version I've heard , by far the greatest sample of the brotherhood between Old English and German. Aside from the "thet" letter in the Old English alphabet, the lyrics are more or less carbon copies to where the average person wouldnt be able to tell the difference without subtitles. Musically speaking, a job well done on maintaining the notes when the chorus chant comes in, I couldnt manage that yet. Love it! I’m Protestant and honestly just hope that one day this hatred between us Protestants and you Catholics will end! Well. Old High German was also a very different language to what it is today. They were even more similar than modern High German and Old English is. Grammar wasn't exactly the same, but they were close. Over 1000 years ago, a German would practically be speaking the same language as English. Just with some major dialectal differences. The High German consonant shift really set it apart.

Old English and Old High German sound quite similar by the pure auditive type, but this is def. not understandable anymore for a modern German (the Old High German version is understandable).

Dieses Lied stammt aus der sogenannten Blütezeit des Mittelhochdeutschen, um 1200-1210, ist deswegen kein Althochdeutsch, sondern Mittelhochdeutsch. Althochdeutsch ist zwar heute für die meisten Deutschsprecher kaum verständlich, Mittelhochdeutsch aber schon. Altenglisch / Angelsächsisch ist natürlich einige Jahrhunderte älter. Altenglisch und Mittelhochdeutsch kommen einander immer noch eher nahe, wenn man darüber nachdenkt, dass Altenglisch 300 Jahre älter ist. Dein durchschnittlicher Englischsprecher versteht hier fast nichts.

Its fast to pick up though (if you have some linguistics experience) As a ton of the base vocabulary is the same, just changed a little bit. I feel like its a cheat sheet for learning other languages, that prioritize case and gender, over word order. It improved my spanish and german.

@ well Spanish has no cases and barely even has a functional gender system (at least, it is a lot less erratic than German in terms of gender and also doesn’t have neuter).
