Re Gilardin is a traditional Italian ballad - and one of my favourite European folk songs - that I translated to Latin from the Italian regional language Piedmontese, sung with Italianate Latin pronunciation. Arrangement by The Skaldic Bard. The performance is by me, my wife, and as a first, also my dear mother and father - my mother joined us to sing the parts sung by the mother of King Gilardin/the mother-in-law of his wife, and my father narrated the spoken proverbs towards the final part of the song. I think the song reminds us of the importance of family, so I quite wanted to make this a little family project. The song is quite a heart-wrencher. King Gilardin is wounded while fighting and returns to his mother’s home to die. His mother greets him and attempts to conceal the fact that he is going to die from his wife, who is still in bed recovering having recently given birth to their son. Her mother-in-law tries to give plausible explanations for the singing, music and candles, which are in fact all elements of the king’s funeral. Unwittingly, on her way to church, the wife encounters an altar boy who informs her that her husband is, in fact, no longer alive and was recently buried. At the end, the spirit of her husband comes to her, telling her that she must go on living while he has returned to the earth. There are similar folk ballads in different European languages that touch upon the same themes, such as Le Roi Renaud. I highly recommend you listen to the original in the beautiful Piedmontese - my favourite is a version by a band called Tendachent which can be found here on KZbin. I have linked to it at the end of the video. Many thanks to my friend Louis for checking my Latin. I hope you enjoy - please leave a comment and like the video if you did! You could also support me in making more videos by leaving a donation at buymeacoffee.com/theskaldicbard. Thank you for your kindness. Lyrics in description.

This song does do a good job of showing the importance of the family. Modern culture wishes to destroy the family, but history speaks against them. Tradition is on our side.

Thank you for sharing the Tendachent version of this song. I studied fingerstyle acoustic guitar with their guitar player Enrico Negro (he has a wonderful solo record called La memoria dell'acqua on Bandcamp, and another called Sono with the band Baia Trio) and got to know this band though him, as well as another one that preceded it called La Ciapa Rusa. Both were headed by a singer and hurdy-gurdy player named Maurizio Martinotti, a key figure in the Italian and European folk revival scene of the past 40 years. He sadly passed away on 31 December 2021. I highly recommend checking his music out.

As an Italian, thank you so much! Italian ballads are almost unknown to even Italian themselves unfortunately, so is very nice to see a little part of our culture so well represented! Again, many compliments, you did a beautiful job, just like all the other song that you arranged. Please keep it up, your and Farya Faraji channels are rare pearls in the sea of shit that is KZbin nowdays

Bro Skaldic Bard postet one of my favourite folk songs. As an Italian I thank you for presenting parts of my culture that go beyond the quite exhausting "pizza pasta mamma mia" and "gabagool (if you count italo-americans)" caricatures, showing the beauty and variety of italian folksongs. THANK YOU

Skald and family! what a wonderful performance by all of you. your wife performed extremely well in the early parts of the song, her voice loaned itself very well to the Italianate and her pronunciation was spot on your mother, a charming addition, and her voice worked very well with the lyrical context. The contrast between her and your wife's voices was wonderful and that's without over looking her wonderful singing you, and your voice wonderfully contrasting the song adding depth only where it's needed- not overused as some amateur - even pro!- do where they add way too many layers. i think your natural composition added to the authenticity and "vibe" of the song your father did splendid, i think his speech in the middle -which is normally acclaimed by you- added what it always does, extra information and context whilst also changing the pace and varying the sound give my thanks to Louis - your friend. I am thankful for him checking your Latin and I'm glad that you have enough commitment to accuracy as this God bless

This is very beautiful, and well done as usual SkaldBard. As much as "memento mori" is a well-known phrase, and a good one at that- very important to remember your mortality- I also always think about a counter-phrase for a more optimistic approach as well: Memento Vivere... remember that you have to live, which goes well with memento mori- you must keep yourself in check understanding and accepting that your death will come, but you should not focus on it primarily, keep thoughts of death on the back burner and remember that you have that precious time to spend while you can before you do die... make the most of your mortal life while you can, whether to be useful or to simply enjoy being alive. ...and I gotta say, you, SkaldBard, certainly seem to know how to memento vivere, despite my knowledge of and exposure to you being limited to just your music.

@@SkaldBard He is the rescuer of the relics of Sts. Augustine and Boethius from the Mohammedans at Sicily, the greatest King of Lombardy, he established orthodox laws and codified them in Latin similar to St. Justinian, and is generally regarded as a bastion of the true faith in the Lombardic Kingdom. He also saved the icons from the iconoclasts during the iconoclastic reign in Byzantine Northern Italy. He marched in, took the land and icons, and when they reverted from iconoclasm, literally gave it all back...

Latin ''Ferens'' comes from Proto-indo-European ''bʰéronts'' whose Bh transformed into a F sound in Italic and Hellenic languages, but transformed into a B sound in Germanic languages... ''Ferens'' is a cognate to the English verb ''To bear'' in its present participle tense ''Bearing'' , but it is closer to ''berandz '' from Proto-Germanic Replace the B of Berandz with an F and you get a sound that is quite close to the latin word. I love historical linguistics
