I don't want to make you feel bad about your skating! Just aware that if some bad habits go unchecked this can explain being slower than others even when you are legging it, or worse a slow onset injury from pronation or other issues identified. Ive seen so many slowly injured skaters who had inside edge pronation issues and then had to stop. It's a shame when the solution is doable with a few hours of focus and creating a new habit that then feels much better all round, oh....and you'll be faster and happy about it. I can recommend my "How to Skate for Fitness" online course is all about that. 33 exercises about stride work split into Ex1-10 Beginners Basic Stride, Ex11-21 Intermediate Fitness Stride (this video) Ex 22-33 Advanced Double Push. You can try 2-3 execises from each of these courses absolutely free and see is you like the structure of learning online. www.InlineSkateCourse.com (all 9 courses listed on the Courses page) Hope they help and are fun to do. I know this is intended for beginners or recreational skaters still... the explanation lacks details. You need to explain the D shape which is the recovery mode, you behind kick is a bit exaggerated here, and there is a lot of upper body movement due to the fact you had your arms locked behind. The arms should go in full swing that will imply working more with the body thus getting that cardio session really punching in. Also, important, once the leg comes from the recovery mode, the skater should push in front (glide) not step on the wheels like walking. This will create momentum and increase speed. The most difficult part will remain the carving, the outside edge and the controlled fall (gravitational force using the weight of the body). Other than this... beautiful video with a beautiful lady :) thanks!
@SkatefreshVideos5 жыл бұрын
Sorry I missed this comment months ago. Great explanation of the more advanced strides. This video really is for a lower intermediate level skater who is still perhaps pronating, gliding on an inside edge or setting down in a V shape. Until the glide is properly set up and actually happens, the D shape recovery is too advanced and makes people over balance. I like to focus on glide training a lot so skaters can find their stability over their centre edge first and only later advance that onto the outside edge as you say. Then the carving fun begins.... I think many skaters miss out these foundation aspects and then after years of doing it half right certain problems can develop especially ankle, knee and hip pains and it always comes from one or more of these foundation technique aspects being badly done over time and putting strain on the body. Ive seen it hundreds of time in my 19 yrs full time coaching and its this I want to help "cure" in the world of skating. Most skaters aren't even aware of what makes "good" and "Less good" skating and how to fix it. Hense my channel and online courses which really get to the heart of each issue. You might like to check out the Free Lessons on the Double Push which I teach in 12 exercises. They are available free here, just click on free trial next to Trailer video. inlineskatecourse.com/skate-for-fitness-advanced/

So true. Skating improves my strength alot, especially the legs' muscle. I notice this because I cycle to work everyday on a Giant bicycle, 10km x2=20km everyday. After 2 weeks, cycling to work becomes easier, better breath control, I can strike through the crowd on the street even faster without any hestitation. Thats the best part, because I fell face to the ground too many times during the first 2 weeks skating, I feel more confident than ever. 😁 If I fell again in front of many strangers, never mind, just get back ip and roll.

For me, this is your most effective and beneficial video at my particular stage right now. You demonstrated what was **not** a good stride first and I was a bit confused. But then with the good stride, it started to click. A repeat of the video a few times and it came clear. ... Right now, I'm physical weak and new and can't probably do a good glide on the outside edge safely ... I just don't have enough control yet. But knowing the objective I think will help me a lot. The 50/50 "step, glide, step glide" was also key. Your back foot crosses over and I had assume that that was just for show. But it appears to be essential to have a balanced "glide" phase on the outside edge rather than the center or inside edge. I've not done it but it appears that you are getting some power from the glide phase as well as the step phase. And that leads me to wonder / conclude if it is a much more balanced exercise because not only do you exercise the push out muscles but also the opposite muscles as you control the glide on the outside edge. Just a really good video with a lot of information densely packed and a easy to comprehend format.

Realmente?

I'm on my first week on rollerblades and today I feel pain in my knees. So I'm trying to understand more about how can I stop using the inside edge of the skate. thanks 😊
@SkatefreshVideos3 жыл бұрын
Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. If you are in your first week it's fine to use a subtle inside edge, because your weight is mostly on the center of your body. For now try to keep the balance, your aim should be the center edge. The outside edge comes a little later, when you're comfortable enough to transfer weight from one side to the other as a pendulum. It's necessary to understand that you don't skate perfect from day 1, because that comes with time and conscious practice, however the stride is supposed to evolve, so an intermediate or advanced skater shouldn't have a beginner's stride because it deprives them of efficiency and fitness benefits. A beginner, on the other hand, does need a beginner's stride.

First focus on stay at one site of the bicycle road. I'm a former pro cyclist and I did also a lot of skating. One thing that's very annoying is a skater who taking the whole width of the road. Second, buy a HF monitor and search for proper durability training. Determine your HF segments and make your schedule. It's not hard to find what meets your goals. Internet is your friend. Pay a bit more for good fitting skates and your good to go. Don't forget to change your weehls every 2 weeks if you skate every day. 2 at the front turn them and put them on the back. The back ones same but at the front. Every 2 months new set. Learn to breake first and then taking turns, after that go and make those distances. Don't forget to wear protective gear. Not only because you can fall, but more because of others on the road.

Asha, have you ever considered visiting Ireland and giving lessons here?
@SkatefreshVideos6 жыл бұрын
Hi. I haven't (yet). I've known a few skaters from Ireland and have some online students there but everyone is spread out and I'm not aware of a large scene. Where are you based? Do you skate indoors or out? I know there are some good rinks in Ireland. Have trained a couple of instructors there. Do you think there would be sufficient demand for lessons?
@nnghtngl6 жыл бұрын
@@SkatefreshVideos Hi Asha, thank you so much for replying!). At the moment I am based in the West of Ireland, not far from Galway city. I skate outdoors. I'd describe myself as an Advanced beginner. My goal is to skate for fitness and fun. Would you be able to recommend a good instructor anywhere in Ireland? I might even consider travelling if necessary. I have a friend who I think is a very good skater (former ice skater), but she is a lousy teacher)). So I train myself using your videos, I think they are great. At the moment I am not sure whether there is enough demand to interest you to come over. I just don't know whether there are enough skaters around who would be interested in taking lessons. But if you ever come I will do my best to make myself available.

@@nnghtngl I can direct you to the ICP website who I train instructors for and their Instructor Locator function will let you see everyone who is active in Ireland. It's a short list I'm sure but you can get started. Also check the rinks from a google search and call them and ask if they offer lessons as artistic lessons can sometimes be really good for getting the mechanics of more complex moves like t stops and forward crossovers and parallel turns and stops of course. www.inlinecertificationprogram.org/global-directory?q=1&country=Ireland&city=&state=&certifications= the list is short, just 1 person but there could be other certified instructors who aren't active on ICP (haven't renewed with the ICP recently) but who are out teaching. Have you exhausted a google search? Anyone actually charging will (or should) be online in some format. Hope this helps. If not try my online courses for free and give online learning and training a real go (as if it was a scheduled class with an instructor). Check out the Free Trials on each of the 9 courses available. Especially the Beginner and intermediate levels which would probably both apply to you. www.InlineSkateCourse.com Let me know how you get on if you try them.

Great video. So helpful. 👍 P.s that awkward moment when the camera captures local Brisbane skaters skating wrongly, just as the voiceover describes why NOT to skate like that 😂
@SkatefreshVideos5 жыл бұрын
I observe that 95% of most skaters (even fast ones) are V-ing in their set down and robbing themselves of clean edges (centres or outsides), a strong glide and that gentle zigzag shape that I'm trying to show here. The problem is that "just skating" badly can be hidden from people and the bad habits creep in and then it can get really tricky to fix and correct. But the dangers of not doing so can be awful foot rubbing and blisters (from long term pronation) or worse still slow onset joint pains (feet, ankles, knees or hips) from longterm pronation. I've seen this develop in skaters pronating and then Ive seen the pains disappear as the pronation is worked on and fixed. I've done this process thousands of times with different students so I absolutely know one causes the other. But everyone seems very happy to skate badly, so this is what I;d like to wake everyone up to with videos like this.
@laurencedurrant20326 жыл бұрын
I thought your bad stride was actually pretty decent - better than skaters you were passing! Your good stride was super smooth and efficient, I wonder how long the average skater would need to get the leg strength needed to glide like that and get rid of those bad habits, a season of training maybe?
@SkatefreshVideos6 жыл бұрын
My bad side was actually not bad enough! The cadence should have been much faster. The speed with it was purely the Triskates and big wheels! The leg and glutei and back strength all comes from doing regular training of progressively more challenging exercises over increasingly longer periods of time (if you are thinking of street skating, marathon training, distance skating etc). It all progresses gradually (your strength and endurance, the muscles learning and remembering the new movements and repeating them in drills so that this filters into 'how you skate'. A season is a great time to decide to dedicate to just improving your skating! From Uk's April to October season is 7 full months and I think if someone dedicates to 30-1hr trappings 1-2x a week for that amount of time, there'd be noticeable and tameable differences. I've seen it. My How to Skate for Fitness online course is all about that. 33 exercises about stride work split into Ex1-10 Beginners Basic Stride, Ex11-21 Intermediate Fitness Stride (this video) and Ex 22-33 Advanced Double Push. You can try 2-3 execises from each of these courses absolutely free and see is you like the structure of learning online. But I think Laurence you've been to my Speed skating class in London therefore you already know a bunch of those exercises!!! Greetings from Rio.

I experienced the pain in my feet when gliding on the inner edges, like you mention. I'm currently trying to get it to center before going on the outside edges. The problem is keeping balance long enough on one foot. I just recently started learning :)
@philwelch24476 жыл бұрын
Hey Karel, off skate training is a huge help for balance and muscle memory, a tip from somewhere else was to skate only on outside edge as a drill. Asha is a great teacher and has one of the top sites but also check Pascal Briand, Viktor Thorup or Coach Sooty for some off skate training, they are speed skaters but the basic skills are the same.
@SkatefreshVideos6 жыл бұрын
Karel Donk Tou have exactly the right idea. You have to fiat master centre edges before going to outside edges. The Toe Roll exercise is very good for training one legged balance. Try it. Front skate straight ahead back skate behind you on just the front wheel. Forces you to find your balance on that front skate. Bend that knee! Good luck.

@@SkatefreshVideos Thanks for the info, I'll be sure to try that too. Learning to skate is almost like trying to learn how to walk again. It's a very interesting experience, and I've already gotten a taste of the feeling of fun and freedom. I don’t understand what you mean about the V
@SkatefreshVideos11 ай бұрын
When skating, at the moment when one skate comes down to change foot, you can either point that foot/skate straight ahead OR it can point outwards creating a "V" shame for the moment of the push. This V shape creates skating that is more likely to have a tilted angle on the inside of the wheels (known as pronation) which causes a host of problems (foot, ankle & knee pain, plus looking "beginnerish"). Skating with this V-shape also robs you of a good glide which makes skating look smooth & graceful. So V-ing is the number one issue for the majority of skaters that should be fixed if you want to skate well, avoid pain and injuries and skate longer distances for fitness. Watch the video one more time and notice the difference between a straight ahead set down position when I change legs and a V-ing set down position. Hope this makes sense.

@SkatefreshAsha. Your videos are very well made. What did you mean by "being on my set down"?
@SkatefreshVideos3 жыл бұрын
Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. She says "V-ing on my sit-down" (not the best audio I know, and the auto subtitles are funny). It means that when she glides on that support leg the skate is taking a diagonal direction, it doesn't point straight ahead, instead it creates a kind of V stance for the feet. This stance is the one absolute beginners use when they start rolling, and it's totally fine at that stage, however as you progress with balance and confidence you are supposed to improve your stride and get rid of that V stance, achieving more efficiency.

Why do skaters put their arms behind their back? Is it less tiring? Is it for aerodynamics? Is it more efficient? Is it comfortable? Is it for looks?
@SkatefreshVideos5 жыл бұрын
Good question and good replies. Less tiring is the main reason so for long distance skating this will save energy and leave all the work up to the legs and glutei (so good technique is essential). The arms are usually used in a swinging or pumping motion when skaters want to accelerate or keep up a higher more attacking pace, but this obviously uses more energy and produces more speed.

@SkatefreshVideos4 жыл бұрын
Claire A. During the glide phase your wheels can be tilted to the ground in 3 positions. Inside edge, where the wheels are not upright but pronates onto the inside of the wheels, centre edge where the wheels are vertical and upright, or outside edge which is the outside part of the wheels. Inside edges are to be avoided and fixed in favour of first centre edges and much later outside edges. Hope this clarifies.
