i'm trying my best to explain. same as in daytona 500 or whatever it's called. The track is oval, so fastest line would be the same and difference in times would come to 0 eventually, this sport wouldn't have lasted for a week if it was your way. it's about attacking and defending positions, not going round and round. the whole point of the competition is racing. they all have same level stamina and leg strength also their knowledge in skating is practically the same. its all about knowing when and how to attack, and how to defend. so your suggestion wont work.

Would be much better if it was a pursuit, ie. everyone starts equally spaced round the track, and the fastest wins. Maybe if you catch and tag someone they are eliminated.

I prefer speed skating on wheels rather than on ice... it just feels more exciting to watch, for some reason. Maybe it´s the size of the track.. This sport should be part of the Summer Olympics program

Lots of Pushing. That shouldn't be allowed. If the point of this is to see who is fastest in a 1000 meter race. Then make a 1000 meter long straight track and give all of the racers a straight run to do and see who is faster. Anyone can push someone out of the way. But if we are talking about speed then that would be the best way to see who is fastest.

because the guys behind have less air resistance -> they have more speed then someone in front -> they dont want to hit him -> they push him slightly on the back so the speeds get equal. You see that a lot on cross country skiing when they go downhill.
