In this video I will give you a breakdown of three stopping techniques on inline skates / rollerblades that I think are suitable for the beginner skater to learn. Or indeed any level of skater if you have not tried them before.
These are what I refer to as the drag stop, the basic powerstop and the powerslide.
These are the three techniques I taught myself when I started skating three years ago and these breakdowns are how I learnt them. It is not very long ago that I was still learning so I can remember what it was like trying to stop and some of the problems I had. I hope this tutorial will help you out!
Please note though I am not a skate instructor. These are just my ideas on how to learn but I hope you find them useful.
This is not the definitive guide on how you must stop! There are lots of different techniques and variations out there. I would always encourage people to check out other guides and tutorials, whether that is here on KZbin or with your local skate instructor.
Note: Sometimes these stops are called different names, for example the drag stop is also called the L stop and T stop. And the powerstop and powerslide are sometimes inter changeable. Confusing I know!
If you have any questions leave them in the comments and as always I will do my best to answer them.
Happy stopping!

A common question I get asked is 'will these techniques wear the wheels out quicker?' The simple answer is yes they will. However, if you make sure to alternate your feet and also rotate your wheels often your wheels will generally last just fine. I've been using these techniques since I started skating and I've never worried about the wear on the wheels. If it does worry you then don't use these techniques, simple! Thanks for watching.

I naively bought skates recently. I did it without second thought when I was young, so I figured a bit of a refresh course and I'd be right back out there. Hell no, I truly feel like an old man on these skates lol. All the extra pounds I've gained over the years don't help either. It feels like these skates want to shoot from underneath my body. And now if I fall, it's a much longer way down than back in the day hahaha. But screw it, I'll keep practicing

@@danhle1032 If you're learning you don't have the tools to judge YET, so you might blame yourself for your failure to learn. I know I do this. His video is extremely good. I often had to pause other videos but in his video there is already a lot of slow motion and he knows exactly when and where to pause as if he himself was learning. This is gold! I think it is the best tutorial I've seen so far. I've been rollerblading for 15 years now but I've never learned these ESSENTIAL techniques. How, you ask? Toronto's Harbourfront trail is just perfect, an almost straight line whether you go East or West, so you don't need to learn these MOST IMPORTANT techniques, I just skate to the grass and stop. I learned something where I turn 360 a few times until I stop, but this is no way to do it. I have to say I also never fell (fear of falling keeps me from learning).

as a guy who's been skating for over 10 years i have one tip to give to new skaters. if you are found in a situation when you are rolling at high speed do not use the 1st technique due to it beeing around relying on balance. even for a exprienced blader you could easily brake hard enough to throw you out of balance and land face first.

@@alphaelkdmt3525 use the left and right rolling around up untill you are in a comfortable speed to stop with that technique. i wouldn't write this unless i have experienced this effect on my own body. i was going around 30mph on a downhill and had to quickly stop at a halt and i did the same technique as i use for close scenarios in the city(1st) and the balance shifted from the ground upwards on my body and it was like i was beeing catapultet at a medium distance across the road. luckly i used my hands to fall and no major injury came but it happens even to the most experienced ones

Best tutorial on YT for stopping on inline skates. I appreciate that you are a relative newcomer to the sport and have not lost your beginner's perspective on technique (although you have advanced far beyond it). For the power stop, I like that you showed how to slowly progress around a cone before attempting the actual stop. 'Preciate it bud.

I saw a video the other day about a guy in Africa who skates. He doesn't have off-road skates, just big wheels, like 125s or something, but he just goes at it like a nutter & blasts over rocks and stones, dust and all sorts. He seems to have an unerring eye for the best skating surface in any alleyway or dirt track road. Amazing stuff.

This is a brilliant video mate. Ive seen alot of stopping tutorials as well. This is right there with the best. Will watch this 10 times over. You got a different approach that explains it really clealy (including pitfalls) and the drills to get there are good as well . Watching it i realised that was what i was doing in my drill for powerstop. . Its clear you put some thought into it. This is a video i would recommend to anyone wanting to improve thier stops. Well done.. all the best.

I used to skate a lot but never quite understood how to power slide and never really tried. That was before and leading into the infancy of KZbin so I couldn't watch videos like this. From those that I've seen, your video gives the best explanation and visuals to explain it. It seems that other skaters struggle to remember the process in such a detailed way. These moves become second nature after a while so they tend to miss small but essential aspects.... And it really doesn't look all that hard so even though I've just started skating again, I should pick this up in no time. Thanks.

So I haven’t been rollerblading for years (since elementary or middle school) because I had worn down my old skates so much. Well a couple days ago I finally bought my self a new pair of skates and was skating for the first time in years yesterday. Surprisingly I didn’t have trouble actually skating (though I had been ice skating a few times this past year). Only problem I had skating yesterday was the stopping. My skates have a brake on the back of he right side, however it didn’t help me much with stopping, so I am going to try a couple of these techniques next time I skate (whenever I don’t have to work.)

Bro great video. Probably the best vid out there for intro stopping. I'm having issues getting the initital parallel turn for the powerstop though - I just can't do it. I try to scissor my feet like you do but the only way I can get myself to turn is by moving my back foot up - I'm essentially doing an A-turn at that point. Do you got any extra tips for getting the turn down?
@whittyskater8854
@whittyskater8854 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching. I would suggest putting a bit more weight on your inside foot as you do the turn. You can lean slightly in to the turn to do this. I think this will help in keeping you feet scissored. Also start with wider turns first. The wider the turn the easier it will be to scissor your feet. You can then slowly make the turn tighter and tighter. Hope this helps!?
