I skated at a rink 6 days a week when I was a teenager. I quit skating after high school. I’m now 54 and bought my first new skates since I was a teen. I’m finding my balance, foot/leg strength, and flexibility are quite different now. Watching your videos is helping me ease back into what I once loved. Thanks for your content!

Hi, Katie. Your teaching method is so detailed, visual, and amazing. I've learned so much from watching and listening to you. I'm excited to get off work and go implement your beginning techniques. I've been so afraid to try anything but skate forward because I couldn't grasp how to do anything more. Thank You for your time, energy, and effort.

I just got my first pair of skates after 10yrs of using inlines. Any tips for adjusting my balance to quads? I know to bend my knees and put weight on the balls of my feet, but the center of gravity is very different than I’m used to
@Skatie
@Skatie 9 ай бұрын
100% , with inlines you have a much longer wheel base front to back than with quads. it’s much less stable so it’s really important to keep your weight from going too far towards the heel as the skates will remind you very quickly how gravity works! 😉 but quads are much more stable side to side, make sure you have movement in your trucks, as an inline skater I suspect you have some serious ankle strength so by making sure your wheels flex together when you lean on the big toe and little toe you’ll be able to edge like you do on the inlines. You may want the trucks with quite a bit of flex to get the same movement as you do on inlines. Have fun!
@angelaking9126

Thanks for all your videos! They're so helpful. Can I ask, on crossovers, where do you put your weight on the leg you've crossed over. I'm not very flexible in the hips, I can't quite get a full crossover (bend the knee more I'm guessing?) I'm not sure whether weight should be even, or on an edge. Thank you 😊
@Skatie
@Skatie 3 жыл бұрын
Great question! If you’re doing crossovers anti clockwise then the inside foot, the left leg would be doing an outside edge, weight on the little toe and the right foot would be doing an inside edge, weight on the big toe. As the foot crosses and comes down onto the floor ideally the weight would be slightly towards the ball of the foot for balance and leaning towards the inside wheels with weight on the instep to get the inside edge. Hope this helps and let me know if you need anything clarifying. Enjoy your journey. 🛼

@@Skatie That's great! Thank you so much. Thinking how I do it, I'm sure I've been trying to put my weight evenly on my whole foot. I need to be spoon fed weight balance and edges, I'm not a natural 🤣

Hi Katie, I have new plates on my skates.... Didn't intend for that to rhythm but when I am at the rink I feel like the amount of effort to go forward is tremendous my legs start to burn and that never happened before I switched plate( unless my trucks were not adjusted right but these I have tired tighter and looser). They are 10 degree instead of 20 but it is sooo hard to go that I am tired after half hr when i normally skate 3 hours. I am going to try harder cushions at the top of the truck but what else could it be? Do i need to go and have the plate remounted? it is off center by about a millimeter towards the little toe and i read that is right not perfectly straight. I paid 200 dollars for lighter plates but I am skating on my 50$ cheap pair so I don't die of exhaustion. The old skates I think have hard plastic of cushions lol Is that it and I am out of shape? It feel like I don't have any transfer but yet I am 200lbs and I have my entire weight on one skate not centered.
@Skatie
@Skatie Жыл бұрын
That definitely sounds like something could be wrong. Are you on the same wheels? Usually it’s wheel related when you feel like it’s really hard work like that. Is that a skate shop near you that you could have a chat with to check the mount. Mounting is quite a delicate science, the plate needs to be mounted in the centre of the foot. When you look down at the skate there should be an equal amount of wheel showing on each side of your foot.

Hi Katie, thank you for all the great videos, they are really good and easy to understand, but yes im still struggling at many points :p I have a problem when trying to move, my skate always too fast either forward and backward, im not sure its bcuz of the ground or my balance or my skate is not properly adjust. i also have a difficulty to do bubble, i feel like my wheels are hard to slightly turn. again, im not sure these problems are from my movement or the skate or the floor. could you give some advice?, thank you. (i have Chaya elite skate and just start skate for about 3 days)
@Skatie
@Skatie 3 жыл бұрын
These are all totally normal when starting out. Strapping wheels to your feet is a completely new experience. Have you adjusted your trucks? This can help with bubbles. I have a “how to adjust your roller skates” video that will help with this. Also if you’re feeling your wheels are running away with you, it’s possible to actually tighten the wheels so that they don’t roll as freely. The same video will help you with that too. Bend your knees, wear your safety gear and just take it at your own pace xx You got this x

@@Skatie Thank you for your reply, actually I already watched all of your videos, so I had adjusted my skates 2-3 times and I think what I did today is the best fit for me 🥰 But I'm still repeat watching your videos everyday before I start rolling, there always have some point that help to improve for my next rolling :) and yes, I'll do my best at my own pace 😌, xx say Hi from Bangkok Thailand 😘

That’s really common as we move how we’re used to so walking action. But unfortunately this doesn’t work on skates as the back foot needs to turn out to push. I’ll like a video explaining this. Around the 2minute time stamp I talk about walking. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hpi5Y3yFepyNrsU

When you skate out doors do you skate with your inside heels or the balls of your feet? So confusing!
@Skatie
@Skatie 3 жыл бұрын
You want your weight on the ball of your foot. So if you’re leaning towards the inside or outside of the skate it’s always safer to keep the weight slightly forward as falls backwards tend to be much nastier than forward falls. Does that help answer your question?

@@Skatie Thanks Katie. Actually on carpet my balance is "normal" and my strides are good. It's when I get onto the basement floor that the jerky feet happens. Getting better with balance. So balance seems to be the issue. Discovered its a balance issue while comparing my skating using the wheeled laundry cart (nice long stable strides) and not using it (short jerky feet). I'm in full protective gear btw. Hopefully by taking in-person skating lessons, instructor can visually see and help me correct my problem. Love your videos. Helpful.. 💞
