Home ownership is definitely expensive! Last year it rained and was dry differently from usual which caused huge cracks in our walls and a $5,000 repair bill. The year before that the ceiling fell on my son's bed one day. And at Christmas we had a huge gumtree fall over and take out our fence and very nearly take out our car. So even just insurance is a huge expense. It doesn't really get easier the longer you"ve had the house, but it probably helps having a smaller one 😊

Having to pick your own plumber or electrician can be daunting! It took me three plumbers to find a good one! I also made myself watch and learn on certain projects so I wouldn't have to pay someone to do the chore! Thank goodness these days there are many you tube videos to learn through! You look so happy being the master of your own space/place Eli!! I love your new sweater!!

Podcast update idea: Discuss a topic in knitting, fiber, craft, London, Norway, culture, etc. in each episode. Like a 3, 10, or even 25 minute verbal essay on interesting information about a topic of interest to you. I watch your podcast because you know about things I can't google as an American and English speaker: Norwegian knitting history/modern culture/ yarn and the London experience. I also watch you because you know technical knitting information. You are Ravenclaw intellectual vibes for knitting and fiber.

Absolutely love watching your videos! Happy to see you are settling into your new home. When you get a chance search for magnetic screen doors. This will allow you to have your door open for some fresh air without letting in any unwelcome creatures.

The yoke on your move-in cast is stunning! I can feel joy through my laptop screen because your stress level has dropped dramatically. Check the fans for clogs of lint this can be keeping them from working properly. Make sure there are clean filters in your heating/cooling system. Lastly, use drywall anchors to keep the curtain rods up. Pre-drill the holes for the screws, then put in the drywall anchor then screw in the screw. The anchors keep the screws from being pulled out by the weight of the curtains.

On the repair issues: You can get dehumidifiers for RVs that are reusable gel beads. Some come with electric housing that resets the beads after they saturate with water. You can also get the kind that bakes in the oven to reset. For the neighbor, you can do some googling on how to soundproof the wall between you and the neighbor. Funny enough, there is a youtube video that demonstrates a pile of terrycloth towels does a better job insulating sound than professional sound insulation foam. You could ask they move the speakers away from the wall that shares with your bedroom. Bookshelves with books or wool would also be sound insulating. I hope the apartment issues resolve well!

Oh my gosh, yes! (that applies to basically everything you talked about, knitting and life).Love the "move-in cast on". One idea that we Americans use to keep vermin/bugs out and air in is screen doors. Then you can have the doors open in the summer and not let every rat and it's pal inside. Obviously an AC unit would be more comfortable, but a screen might be cheaper until the boiler is done being expensive... There are some very handy comments below about dry-wall screws, etc. The good news is that almost everything is on KZbin these days, so if you don't know how to do something, there is probably a video of some old guy in Canada showing you how. (Maybe the Canadian thing is just because we googled how to fix a snow-blower. But you get the idea...)

Glad your 1st cast on is bringing you so much joy. There will be happy memories each time you wear it. It seems like every place people live has pros and cons. You just have to decide what you can tolerate and what is a deal breaker. Good thing is ... if you find something more perfect in the future ... you can do it on your own terms and move at your own pace. A dog would be perfect! It will get you out walking and getting to know the neighbors. A nice ice breaker. Enjoy your coffee!! xx

Hi Eli - so glad you’re getting settled in your new place. So exciting! My background is in interior design and specialized in renovation. Bermuda is quite different from the UK so please take my suggestions with a grain of salt but hope these points help. For your heating/boiler etc would it not be better to get an inline wall unit which I think is called a heat pump there in the UK? That would resolve your heating issues as well as your AC needs all in one go and are overal more space and running (ie use of electricity) efficient. Ceiling fans are always overlooked in cooler climates but my clients whose homes I’ve worked on off the island have found them so helpful in moving the warm air around in the winter as well as keeping the cool air moving in the summer. Ceiling fans also keep your heating and A/C electricity bills down too. Also with the doors and rats, there are great retractable screens for doors that you can mount on the door frame and then they retract vertically to one side. They are super and will also help with bugs. Hope this all helps!!! Congrats again on home ownership! ❤

I hope you manage to navigate the glitches of home-ownership and DIY asap. I know about humidity issue, as part of our home is lower ground floor and we are pretty close to Deptford Creek and the Thames. We use a dehumidifier and it makes a massive difference. It also means our laundry dries much faster (without having to put the heating on).

I highly recommend getting an airconditioner! You could also use it during the winter to heat one room of you want to conserve on gas ;). We have solar panels and have therefore switched over completely to heating with the airconditioner ;). So happy to see that you're out of the woods with the move! That was an awful situation!

Congratulations on becoming a home owner! I live in Australia, just about every home here has fly screens on the windows and doors, they keep out more than just flies. You can even get burglar proof ones. In summer we close the house up to keep the heat out, including curtains or blinds on windows that the sun hits. Then open up overnight. Love watching your podcast and think your patterns are great x

Can you have a screen-door/storm-door installed outside of your exterior door to the garden? It would keep pests out but the screen would allow fresh air to come into your home. Maybe this is just something that exists in Canada and the USA. Good luck with your repairs/renovations! Cheers-Laura

Oh yes, the never-ending expense of being a homeowner I know well. I got a fixer upper free standing house with a flat at the back of the property. The main house had to be fix as there was nothing done to it in the 30yrs the previous owner had. Only the flat was new and well kept since it was rented out. I lived in the flat while the main house was renovated. The municipal bill has costs even before the water and electricity gets added. So even if no one was living inside a house, it will still cost money every month. House was fixed, I moved in. Every year I do a major project to the house but unexpected things always pop up. Last year I added fiited cupboards in the kitchen but then one of the bedroom ceilings had to be replaced which was a big expense on top of the kitchen update. Still, I extremely happy to own the roof over my head and not having to worry about being homeless. All the best with getting your home to fit your needs. It's a process and not an overnight thing, so be patient, it will be worth it.

Eli could you speak to the building owner/manager? I know you purchased it but wouldn't there be some over-management? But yeah I get it. I live in a subdivision and like four houses away, someone plays the SAME thumpy music every day at 2:30. For several YEARS. I think they must be doing a Peloton workout or something. They certainly are consistent. A dehumidifier is worth it's weight in gold so mold doesn't happen. And if you can save for it, get a mini-split that has heat and air.

And you can buy adjustable screen doors, that have a lock from inside.Congratulations! I bought my first home at around 44 years old. I ❤❤❤it! And it is more of a cabin! That was about 9 years ago, I can’t remember, time flies, but I love owning my own place, mentally it is very reassuring.😊😊

I'm not sure if these exist in the UK (though I'm hoping they do, given the increase in hot summers) but when we rented in Sydney (which is notorious for never having installed screens, but having lots of wildlife, including face-hugger sized spiders 😭) we would go to the hardware store and get magnetic screens that you could install into the windows and doors. They hold against outside animals/bugs/etc and also my cats couldn't get out. Maybe that would help?
