a lot of tutorials to do with skeletons seem to just be for the default mannequin but sometimes most of it can be applied to your own skeletons. something I found useful though is downloading the mannequin skeleton and actually making my own mesh fit to that, but of course that means the character has to fit those proportions so wont always work

@@jackjerker895 If you're smart you rig your model to the UE4 skeleton, that way you can use all of the marketplace animations without extra work. Which is why this tutorial and a lot of others use the default mannequin as an example.

Some insight which was useful to me: import the Animation Starter Pack first in a different (temporary) project and export the animations from there. This will give you the fbx files which you can then import into your working project.

If anyone is still stuck on not being able to find the retarget options for each bone for the CouchKnights girl, You have to click the options button under the skeleton tree then check "show retargeting options" Then each of her bones will have the retarget options. :)

Hallo. Thank you for this very in depth tutorial of skeletons and animations. Is it possible that you can please give us a link where we can find the fbx files . Because you do a very detailed demonstration of how to do fbx importing (something that i once again appreciate a lot) . However the assets in the marketplace is added to the project directly. This means that it is uassets by the time it is in the project. I am aware that once an asset is in the unreal engine it is possible to export it and that it then becomes a fbx. The problem is however that some of the assets does not export as an fbx, like the skeleton for example which is exported as a TD3. Point is without the fbx files it is difficult to perform any of the actions demonstrated in this tutorial. Thank you very much for this tutorial, any feedback will be appriciated.

Question - So you're able to import an FBX with multiple animations, but you cannot import an FBX with multiple meshes ? All the meshes need to imported separately if not merged ? I'm asking because I have a low poly character, mid res, and hi-res character poly count. In Unity, I have no problem importing all 3 models into one FBX, but that doesn't seem to be the case with UE4.

In Ue 4.14 Instead of being asked to create skeleton when importing Mixamo Character, it will ask if I would like to "regenerate"one, when opening both mixamo and Manequin windows. There will not be a skeleton created for mixamo character.(seems to still be sharing manequin)

This doesn't work at all. I imported assets to the content folder, but it is as if no imported resource is aware of the others. "Use Animation Asset" doesn't show the imported animations for the mannequin. I imported scanned characters that use the UE4 Mannequin Skeleton, but I tried to apply the animation blueprint "ThirdPerson_AnimeMP_C" class, but it didn't work, character stands there with spread hands. It is as if we're using too different software. What am I doing wrong?

However, I think that the video is not dealing with a very important problem that is happening to me. There is a plugin in blender to rename bone automatically to different systems (unreal, mixamo,…) and there is a plugin in Unreal that retarget a mixamo skeleton to Mannequin (because is not only the names, is also the rotations)

I am a Unity user and am converting my project to unreal. In unity we have a tool that allows us to configure skeletons to work in any skeletal animation by saying which bone is which regardless of the bone structure of our animations. We do it to meshes and to animations and that way unity can play most (all?) skeletal animations on any mesh. Is there a similar feature in Unreal. I imported my mesh and created the skeleton rig, and then I try to import my animation and tell it to use the skeleton I created and it fails so it doesn't import anything. So I can't even load the animation from it's own skeleton to try and fix everything somehow inengine.

Skeletal Retargeting is what I was looking for to be able to interchange animations between characters with different skeletons. I still don't know how to import skeletal animations when I don't have the Mesh Skeleton it was designed for.

In UE4.14 is the UE4_Mannequin_Skeleton on the same place? Trying to find the path "Content>ThirPersonBP>Character>Mesh"here but I can only find "Content>ThirdPersonBP>Blueprints" and no Mannequin_Skeleton, only "ThirdPersonCharacter" and "ThirdPersonGame".

When i import a mixamo character i get the same error message as in the video so click no, But when i try to open the skeletal mesh i get this: The Skeleton UE4_Mannequin_Skeleton, is missing bones that SkeletalMesh SK_Mannequin needs. They will be added now. Please save the Skeleton! And when i click Ok i get this: The preview mesh hierarchy doesn't match with Skeleton anymore. Would you like to regenerate skeleton? So i click yes, But It doesn't generate a new skeletal mesh (like in the video) But switches me to the mannequin skeletal mesh Does Anyone know why that happens? Briefly could you describe the way the bones are set up in the coat of the trooper? There's a lot of them so it's hard to see. Are they all long strings of bones going down. Or are they interlocking somehow?

UE4 comes with a few animations with its starter template projects. But for the most part, like in the case of models. You have to source and import animations from outside the editor to in your games. Some example would be acquiring free animations from mixamo.com, free and paid for from ue4 store, and of course, any you and/or your team creates, etc... The ones he shows in the tutorial were sourced from the UE4 store. That's why he shows importing them.

Incredibly frustrating that you re-release this, but only on 4.8, we are well into hot fix's for 4.9 now... Not all of us have room for several engine versions, and going backwards to learn about something that may not be commensurate with an up to date version is disheartening. Add to that you reference assets (Free animations) that have not even been upgraded to work with 4.9 yet, so we can't even open up the assets and try things out without downgrading. If you are going to re-release training, please do it with the latest engine along with updated resources, otherwise you are just making any learning frustrating.

Everything was updated and was working fine again until UE got updated again. The idea is that the marketplace doesn't allow downloading fbx files, instead it does everything automically, but only if versions match, which kinda doesn't make sense - those are just animations, what's there to update???

You can setup your personal rig in your proprietary, but it has to follow the naming convention of Unreal's skeletal hierarchy. If you want less in the hierarchy, you create a new rig from the UE4 Mannequin Skeleton. Deselect the bones that are not in your skeleton and save, then you just retarget the animation to said mesh.

Ok I got the soln first add a character pack from marketplace (i used infinity blade warriors pack), in the content browser right click on any of your newly added skeletal mesh go to skeleton->assign skeleton and select your desired skeleton.(I am On version > 4.24)

Look up Nvidia APEX cloth tool, which you can download from Nvidia, or it's been integrated into the engine but you need to activate it under experimental. Allows you to simulate parts of a mesh, or you can even mix animation actions/Apex simulations to whatever degree you wish. There's also Nvidia Destructibles for static meshes to break apart and Flex particles. Cool tools.

Why would you need to share animations between characters that share a skeleton? ANIMATIONS ARE A PART OF THE SKELETEON NOT THE CHARACTER MESH. This should say how to share animations between *_skeletons._* Or how to ELIMINATE a skeleton.

Honestly, I've always believed that eventually, UE4 devs would make it like..ahh how to explain it.. A normal human skeleton, for example, would have the basic arms, hands, feet, legs, head, neck, fingers, toes, chest, stomach, and hip. So a normal human animation would work with it. Now take a....an Anthropomorphic lion, for example. It also has the basic arms, hands, feet, legs, head, neck, fingers, toes, chest, stomach, and hip, but with a tail! And the human animation wouldn't work, because it has a tail. Wouldn't it be nice if the animation would still affect the whole lion, and still of course the tail wouldn't have any movement, being that the animation doesnt have a tail animation added. To add it up, maybe then you could alter the animation, and add movement to the tail, thus, you've got a human animation, that can fully work on a lion anthro with a til, that now has an added animation! Wow...so much typing. But I hope you get what I'm saying ;-;

Same Animation and Same Skeletal Mesh is not everything and not worth , after you play with child Blueprints you will know that separate skeleton are much better to use and even if you get all BP stuff to copy to all classes adn Some Animations , because its broken the Skeletal Mesh every time Fails to play the CharBP Animations not the AnimBP,i would to see a video that in Game 2 Different Skeletal Meshes share the same Skeleton and Animation fight against each other , you will never see because its impossible with one Skeleton , how much you crawl The BP and Software from UE4 are brocken in this case why you referenced a Skeleton to a Blueprint ist a logic or a Visual Script why so complicated

why you need animations for ue4? all you need is a rigged character.

I lost count of the number of times that you started talking about things and then said "But we are not going to be doing anything with that". If they are not important to what the video is about why mention them at all. Over 5 minutes into the video I was so frustrated I could not finish watching it.
