"Don't judge a book by it's cover." That's something we are all taught. In the case of "fancy" ammo, you shouldn't let the illustrations on the box fool you either. There are plenty of companies that want to separate you from your money. We were VERY skeptical about this ammo. Federal's own video for this just used computer generated imagery to show how it worked. The pellets in that video and on the box looked nothing like the pellets in the shells. Every indicator was there to trigger the BS alarm.
We are not sponsored by anyone, including Federal.
Currently, this is only available in 12ga. But I have good news for 20 ga. and 410 owners. 12ga shotguns are pretty cheap.
In this video we test the patterns, test them against different types of medium, including a 16" Clear Ballistics gel which cost $140 and is pretty much contaminated now.

When you were dumping that buffer out of the shell it brought back bad memories of when they first starting putting that in buckshot. They started out with a regular crimp and that stuff would leak out and get all over the place. I was in charge of weapon maintenance for our department and I dreaded having to clean out all those little nylon (or whatever they were made of) bb's. They would leak into the magazine tube and into the action sometimes. Didn't cause any malfunctions but it was sure a mess.

@@mattberg6816 in theory it could create cutting forces via hydrostatic shock, see gel tests of rounds like the extreme penetrator. or could cause them to cartwheel erratically through soft tissue as opposed to just boring straight through, although neither of those appeared to happen. its just yet another gimmick frangible round. those are literally federals copper plated 00 buck balls with a cut through them so they can sell them at a hyped up price with inferior performance
@mattberg6816
@mattberg6816 3 жыл бұрын
@@commie4164 I think you are dead on with the cutting forces theory. I was thinking something similar but wasn’t sure how to word it correctly. I do agree with you on the fact that it’s a gimmicky loading. As far as the cost is concerned I’m not sure that it’s unwarranted. I can’t imagine getting a slot into those plated balls is inexpensive. I’ve worked with lead for almost 20 years as a plumber and it’s a tricky material. It would be a pain to get that slot no matter how you went about it. Casting something that small into it would be very difficult. If they are cut in the tooling would need to be almost constantly cleaned because lead tends to coat and gum up absolutely everything.
@commie4164
@commie4164 3 жыл бұрын
@@mattberg6816 they likely use something akin to a very hot knife, likely wire, while a row of the balls are held in place. the cutting forces does work. but those rounds displayed none of it in the gel. they likely dont have the mass or energy left after ripping themselves apart to accomplish it. you need a hell of a lot of velocity for it to actually happen.

This has functionality. I’ve done it with .68 lead ball using a slingshot. I split them just slightly more than halfway, with perpendicular splits. What it does is to deform as it hits the target. This delivers more energy to target than a solid ball, which has more propensity to bounce off. And yes, it creates cutting surfaces. So instead of denting and then bouncing off a fence post, it deforms and sticks in the fence post. If the 00 shot were cut halfway, it would potentially create more hydroshock as some of those balls open up and expand their impact area within the target.
@crashstitches79

@@crashstitches79 Setup is a simple wrist rocket, with the heaviest tubing I can find. It’s slower than smaller ammo, but it hits much harder. So the penetration differential is due to some of the shot expanding before splitting causing drag and slowing them down. The shot that didn’t expand and split will most likely go through as seen in the vid. Think of a parachute effect while they are splitting. Great video as always. 🤠

I'd guess that the whole ones made it through because having to split the copper plated halves takes energy that couldn't go to penetration anymore. That was a weird way to say that. I imagine it took a lot of trial and error to get that shot to the point where it would reliably split inside a target instead of inside the barrel, buffer obviously helping with that. The ones that didn't split are probably from erring closer to the side of survivability than frangibility.

It would be really cool to see the fishing weight rounds through the ballistic gel to see if they split or could be cut a little more to cause the split. Also since sugar is so flammable getting hit with any burning buffer could cause additional damage. Was curious because growing up on the coast of SC you can walk through marsh and find hung up fishing line with sinkers on it and distil the salt water down to collect salt and pure water to drink. Sounded like a really mean apocalypse round to me.

@patdavis6383

Whether or not they split probably depends on their orientation when they hit. if a full side is leading, they may not split, if a split edge is leading, the force of impact will tear the two halves apart. This means that over-penetration comes down to chance. There is a VERY small chance that ALL will over-penetrate or that ALL will be stopped. There is a big chance that some will over-penetrate each time. That makes them unreliable if you are looking for no over-penetration. If they spent some money on the shot and split them like a tennis ball, one part of the split would always be running across the surface impacting the target, guaranteeing a split. Having reviewed the high-speed footage of the Force X2, the standard buck and the fishing shot, my conclusion is ....... I would rather not be shot by any of them thank you very much!
@taofledermaus

I was surprised more of them didn't break apart in the gel or the other targets. As far as "reduced" overpenetration, that can make that claim IMHO.

Hemisphere is the correct term for a half of a sphere, though it's usually only used to talk about celestial bodies in day to day language. a semi-sphere could include hemispherical objects but would not be exclusive to half spheres, the same way semi-circles are not all half circles. I want to see you guys reshoot the fishing lead though and see how it patterns in gel and breaks apart. If it's any better and the shot is cheaper, ain't no reason to buy these.
