Welcome back to another Sketchbook Time! Grab your art supplies and draw or paint along with me, or just settle down with a cup of tea and a snack and enjoy watching me experiment in my sketchbook or 40 minutes, layering and mark making. It was fascinating to see how the different materials and colours worked together - I hope that it inspires you to play in your sketchbook too!
This is a very chatty video with no music, so it's perfect to put on in the background while you work. I'll also tell you a little bit about something I've been working on behind the scenes over the past couple of weeks!

I am a little late to this video, but I wanted to comment. I love listening to your voice. It is very calming and lovely. I also love watching art videos and I am also trying to give myself permission to loosen up in my sketchbooks as well. Watching people playing with art supplies is always inspiring! I like to listen to your videos when I am working on boring excel files at work!

Thanks Angela, I'm so pleased that you're enjoying the videos and that they keep you company during boring tasks! It is hard to loosen up and I have to actively keep persuading myself to do it, because my natural tendency is to be quite tight in my work.

I love the expressive style! and so glad you didn’t use music. I prefer to hear the voice and thought process of the artist rather than a music video 😊. I think because we all interpret and experience a piece of music differently, it can inadvertently change the experience of the viewer.

Hi Natasha, everyone must be asleep. I am surprised to see I am the second comment. It is 7.18pm here in Australia. You inspired me to buy a few Windsor and Newton Gouache tubes. I have been painting with water colour. Also bought oil pastels. Really enjoy using them. Really appreciate your encouragement to experiment. Thank you.

made it until the end as always :) You are so right, can't wait to discover your Patreon offerings too. Looks like your channel is growing faster more recently and that your art hauls are the ones that are the most watched, so maybe that would be nice to still do those (and maybe art book reviews love those too) and for the ones of us who would like more painting time the Patreon might be the right choice...anyway you'll know better. But yes I would just like to say that if you are looking for ideas for your videos here on KZbin, don't forget the art book reviews ;-)
@NatashaNewtonArt
@NatashaNewtonArt 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I definitely won't forget the art book reviews! ;) I'm taking notice of the videos that seem most popular with my audience on KZbin, so I'll certainly continue with those, and try to vary the content I upload here as well. The Patreon content will be more in-depth with more emphasis on my art practice and process - lots of painting/drawing/sketchbooks!

As an abstract painter myself,so lovely to get to see you experimenting in this way too,and just having fun with different media,I love how working in such an unhibited way in your sketchbook can be really inspring and can feed back into your regular work later on. I spend some time each day win my sketchbooks doing the same thing,just playing, it helps get me going,and it means I can really explore all my different media too. Layering is such a great thing to do as well,it's that sense of exploration and seeing what will appear as you work. So glad to hear that working like this is also already feeding back into the evoution of you regular work. I find my trditional workig really now influences my digital working and vice versa. I'm happy to hear you have arrived at a work/life balance that works for you and that you can take forward as well,your creative well being will really gain strength from this am sure.Hope Patreon really takes off for you in september and it futher enhances the community that has built up around you here on KZbin.KZbin content is more work than people realise I had a chnnnel for a short time and it almost took over my life,I enjoyed it,but my work suffered in the end,but I learnt a lot doing it. You have a real presence here on you tube and long may that continue,but it sounds like it is a good time for you to try something new with the Patreon platform and it's good that you can work on this with Dominic too.It sounds like so much is happening for you in the future and it's great to hear and will be exciting to go on that journey with you.Glad too that the latest prints and postcards have ben so popular (can't wait to recieve the postcard set!). Have a great weekend. (matt) P.s hope Burt the dog enjoyed his walk!!! and I have been experimenting with Daniel Smith's watercolour ground,in black,transparent and irridescent gold. It's a kind of medium/primer you can apply to wood an other surfaces that creates a ground to paint with watercolours on,it's an intreaguing medium,but I think if you haven't tried it yet look into it,as a mixed media painter it's a great new material to work and experiment with am trying it on glass at the moment.I love using my fingers too in my sketchbook,soo sastifying!! and fun! this video didn't seem that long at all,you were having so much fun and it was so great to listen to you the time passed really quickly!.

I can really see my work evolving as I'm using sketchbooks more; I think it's such an important part of our art practice. :) Thanks so much for your kind words about Patreon, I'm very excited about it and the content I'll be sharing on there. I'll let you know when your postcard set is on its way - I'm gradually making my way through the orders! The DS watercolour ground does sound intriguing, I've heard several people talking about it recently. I love that you're always experimenting, and that you. love and value your art supplies as much as I do mine! Have a great weekend, Matt. Take care. x

Hope you and Dominic have a great weekend. The Daniel Smith watercolour ground in irridescent gold is lovely and realy enhances the trasparency of watercolours and it does affect them,but in a way that I like,I was inspired by others using it here on youtube and thought I would try it.Take care both of you. I loved this sketchbook time chat! 💖 I really enjoyed just the sound of you drawing and sharing your thoughts without any background music. I thought that this video had a bit of a Tony Hart vibe to it! (High praise indeed!) Thank you! 🖤 I think that next time I'd like to chat a little less and just be quiet and listen to the sound of the pencil or crayon on the paper - I love that! I'm so honoured to be mentioned in the same comment as the legend that is Tony Hart. 🙌 It's funny how something that was supposed to be completely abstract and just a layering/mark-making exercise still turned out to represent a landscape! 😂😘 xxx

Hi Natasha, made it to the end, of course! I really enjoy your videos and your voice is so soothing 😊 I love how free this drawing is. It’s something I should try but I’m always so worried about wasting art supplies. Which is silly I know, they’re meant to be used after all 😅 Exciting news about your Patreon 😍 Have you ever considered doing live streams? I wonder if that could be a good balance between you managing to focus on your art and putting out content? Great video as alway, thank you for sharing so much of yourself with us 💚

Thanks so much, Nikki! I also worry about wasting art supplies, which is why I didn't ever really experiment like this in the past. I would have seen it as time that I could have spent (not to mention supplies that I could have used) on work that I'd be making to sell. It did feel like a bit of a waste. But then I realised that it's not just about the end result, but that I learn so much and gain so much enjoyment from the process itself. I feel that it's really helping my art to evolve in a way that's much faster and more satisfying than it otherwise would have done. :)

Watched all the way through to the end, was cool to see this evolve from beginning to finished and hear your thoughts. Personally prefer videos without music too 🙃 so grateful that you went this route! Also, intrigued to see what unfolds with your Patreon and how that will be structured because I’ve been finding myself going back and rewatching some of your old videos wishing you had time to put more content out! Totally understand the struggle of why you can’t 🖤

I love the outcome of your sketchbook play. It looks like a lovely rainy/stormy landscape. It's nothing finished, of course but I could totally see you developing a painting from there. Of course, I also get what you say about YT (effort put into vs. income coming out of it) and absolutely understand your decision to give Patreon another try. Exciting new things coming up for you! :)

I havent tried guoche yet, I'm working on a watercolor palette at the moment but mayb in the future I will try them out, I really like the sea scape u showed in ur sketchbook at first very pretty I love all of them actually lol I think the turquoise kind of abstract one would b an awsome post card, the sea scape would b a good one too really but I would totally hang them both on my wall lol I have to say I really like the way u did one in ur usual style also, I think the looser version is very cool tho very different it seems more free mayb idk lol but anyway awsome video thank u for sharing ur process with us
