Here's always been a belief of mine. You call the pages with sketches that don't "fit" together just random and not knowing what you want to do. I prefer sketchbook tours with pages like those because of the fact that they don't fit together. I find that those lead to further inspiration and ideas to jump from because the sketches that have a "story" coalescing them to each other do just that. They subconsciously become codependent on each other and the mind has trouble seeing them as their own wholes rather than fractions of other wholes. The random sketches don't depend on anything else and can lead you on a path of inspiration you would have never considered otherwise. So, train yourself to see them (or even some otherwise insignificant detail(s) from them) as something that may strike your curiosity and even guide you to your most satisfying artistic endeavor.

22:44 Dude, I felt that at heart. One day I was planning on redoing a painting from two years ago and had everything ready but I got a last minute notification from my family on going somewhere for winter break. We weren't going to be home. the DREAD I felt knowing I won't have time to paint it for another two weeks was immeasurable. When I came back I didn't even feel like painting it anymore.

You are such a graphitist! I cannot seem to get the hang of drawing with pencils. I've done it all my life, sure... But as a child, I always kept an electrical sharpener on my coffee table so that I could sharpen to a fine point every 2-3 minutes. Now when I use graphite, it's a technical mechanical pencil :P and I much prefer the sharp sketchy shaky lines of an extremely fine point silky pen. I erase so much with graphite that I wind up destroying everything I draw with it. with pen, every line stays on the paper and, to be honest, I like seeing all of my spatial corrections in my final pieces, more than I enjoy a clean drawing. YOU on the other hand, get to see all of your shading corrections. I don't do smear shading well. I will always be a cross hatchist at heart :P I really liked so many of your sketches. So many of them could become amazing stand alone finished pieces!!!! this was really inspiring Miss Hong, I hope we have a chance to talk one day! stay at it! ;)

These are fantastic. So talented. I'd say you are too hard on yourself but I understand that's part of the dynamic that makes you great and strive for a better outcome in your art for yourself. I find your "rough drawings" charming and beyond lovely.

Chris, i see that you don’t trust yourself much. Stop! Your work is simply amazing! And did you know that when you show your not so good sketches you are helping us? How? By showing them you are stating that it’s ok to not be perfect all the time, and that “failures” are just steps to greatness! And you don’t have bad sketches... we love them all! Much love 💕

We call them sketch books for a reason, they're meant to be a place to brainstorm and rough out ideas, so I don't think you need to be so hard on yourself. I actually really enjoyed a lot of the really rough stuff you've shown here; it's fun to see raw kernels of an idea, even more so when it came to ones you did progressive iterations on and eventually took to a finished work. These days, I pretty much stick to digital. The program, MyPaint, is my favorite thing to do sketch work in. It gives you an infinite canvas as soon as you start it up and a UI that generally stays out of your way unless you want it there. It has a pretty nice brush engine and lots of handy little features that make life easier. Once you pick up a small handful of shortcuts, it's very quick and intuitive to work in.

3 Questions What are some of the artists or media that influence your art? What are some things that you constantly think about that you would need to learn to be a better artist? Like is it “oh I need to learn composition.” ? Things like that lol. Following up with the previous 2 questions. How do you go about studying other artist? Do you just look at their art and simply draw their pieces or do you just get inspired and try to interpret through your own? I would love to see a video of how you study other artist if you could insert it into your schedule. I love your videos and channel and I can’t wait to see more ❤️

Amazing! I love all the fairy drawings. Have you tried spraying fixative spray for your pencil drawings? I am way late to the game here. Thanks for sharing this. I can tell it was not easy showing things you clearly did not think were good or your best work. It is a SKETCHBOOK after all. I am serious.... you could publish this book of your thought processes and it would sell. It takes those 100s of things to find the one that makes it to the canvas ya know. I really enjoyed getting to see all of this and I am a fan now because of it. Thank you!!!

This is why you are one of my favorite artists, because you show us how much you work to achieve something and your sketchbook is actually a SKETCHbook. Whenever I see other artists showing their sketchbooks with all those perfectly finished paintings it kinda disappoints and intimidates me, cause I feel some weird pressure as if my sketchbook NEEDS to be that pristine. Your sketches are both rough and perfect, I've been struggling with body poses and lightings/shadows and this video really helped and inspired me. Thank you for sharing it with us, I promise I'll work hard to get better :D

Wow, I love this video. I love your videos and your style so much!!. Thanks for your time to make this amazing video. I find we have similar fairytale style ideas. I love to add stories on my drawing too. Like “a little girl is kissing a fish”. Can I ask you a few questions? -I have soooo many ideas what to draw/paint. But I have trouble to finish a sketch, feels like it’s hard for me to apply my ideas on paper. I can not go into details and turn it out to a painting. Like color choosing, shading, cloth/hair/background details... Do you have suggestions on that? -Should I go practice some basics of figure drawing, anatomy, shading, still life painting first? -Which steps is better? Practice all basic foundation before creating paintings, or start my drawing ideas and only practice the parts that I have trouble with? Thank you so much! Again, love your videos and paintings!
