Great video! I personally use the "bulbous" Petzl helmet on my light missions since it was designed for side impacts as well as top impacts and has a CE Ski Touring rating that is lacking from other designs like the Wall Rider, which are primarily designed for top impacts from falling objects. One of the reasons that climbing helmets in general, including the Petzls, are not rated for Alpine Skiing is that they do not meet the penetration resistance standards. If you think about a collision with something like a pine tree branch, you can probably imagine what I mean. The vent holes in climbing helmets are too large and numerous and the foam too soft to resist something like that. That is all to say that you should make your own risk assessment about helmets, as with anything in the backcountry, and choose an option that matches your risk tolerance and objective.

I got the Saloman S lab helmet and have no complaints so far. Got it for a reasonable price so that helped a lot. Also G3 just released a backcountry specific touring helmet

Just started using the Sweet Protection Ascender MIPS. It's like 15oz, doesn't even bother with a liner and is really low volume so it's packable. Not quite as comfy as my Smith resort helmet and not as well integrated with my Smith goggles but I really like it so far and it actually has me considering some Sweet Protection goggles. It's got climbing and skiing certs as well. It's probably a decent alternative to the well-received MTN.

I use one as well. I really like how flat it packs. Easy to get inside my pack. The only con I have experienced is that it is really "tilty". I am not sure if it is the MIPS liner or what but I have to crank it down to keep it from wobbling all over. Overall though, not the lightest, be very packable and the headlamp straps are dope.

Where can we get stickers?

Just my two cents, but I prefer to use a backcountry helmet in resort than vice versa. It might be a little chilly at times for folks who run cold (not me), but the lighter weight and better venting is totally worth it.

What would you say the difference fit wise between the MTN and the Movement is? I have the MTN and with out a thick cap under its huge side to side. Hopefully the Movement is a little more ovaly

7:06 No it’s not. But there is a white version with MIPS technology
@rushthezeppelin3 жыл бұрын
Yup I've got the MIPS version that I bought for multi-pitch climbing. I've often thought about taking it into the backcountry but have been a bit reticent given no ski certification but I also know that a large part of lacking that certification in alot of cases is to reduce cost and liability and not necessarily because they won't work in a specific application.

Love the vid guys. I like to go goggles under helmet so I dont have to worry about compatibility with the helmet just with my head. Balaclava, Beanie, goggles then helmet. Learned it from my fellow park rats back when I liked injuring myself 5 times a season😂😂

@@cnuila While I have you, I wonder if you can help... I'm looking for a mid-layer that is cooler than the Black Diamond Dawn Patrol (which is a bit warmer than an Arcteryx Atom) but warm enough to ski down in. If it's, say, 25F and cloudy, I'll skin up in a base layer + Dawn Patrol unzipped and zip up for the ski down. Backpack doesn't come off. Looking for something that will let me do the same thing for 25-35 degrees. I'm imagining something like a full-zip R1 hoodie but with more wind protection. And I'd like to be able to get it secondhand for roughly 80-130. Tough requirements - any suggestions?
@cnuila3 жыл бұрын
@@zachwong7324 You made me remember a jacket I saw a while back and was curious about. It's the Patagonia R1 Techface jacket (and hoody). Essentially just as you described, an R1 but has a bit more wind and weather protection on the face fabric. Probably tough to find cheap. Another jacket I've used in exactly your described application is the Ortovox Col Becchei Jacket. It's a thinner soft-shell that breathes and regulates temp better than you'd think, but all zipped up it's warmer than I thought as well. One of the few jackets I can wear on the uphill and not feel compelled to layer up at the top. Again, I don't know how much of a bargain you can find, sorry. I'll let you know if I think of anything else.
