Skidsteer stuff

Keep the wheel loader, get the skidsteer and do it all. Can't really have to many machines and skidsteers tend to hold value well compared to tractors and dedicated wheel loaders. In the end, equipment right now is a good investment if you can get a deal on something buy it. I am looking at another low hours skidsteer (2012 New Holland L230) with 160hrs on it to use for commercial snow removal. My other 2016 L230 has 1600 hrs on it and it is a beast and very nice to use for everything. Thanks for the videos!!!!

Not to be that guy. But if you do get a skid loader, and have to use pallet forks to move bale's make sure your forks are as wide as possible

👍👍 I don't like skidsteers at all. Depends what else you have to do, but I'd choose a small size loader. You're sitting higher up, and it's easier to get in and out of the cab.

personally I think you would be better off with a tractor with a loader because you can use it to move hay, clear snow, pull vehicles out of the snow and putting in post holes

Those small wheel loaders are extremely handy, not quite as maneuverable as a skid steer but they generally use the same attachments as a skid loader and have much better visibility and don't tear up the ground as bad

A split body wheel loader is what an old haymaker friend of mine used. Said they were great.

A skid steer has it's place in small pens low cattle buildings , construction/other work in small area's. I'd say as you don't seem to have much of any of those things right now, A farm tractor would be more use as if one of your others goes down you can still make hay or use it for anything else that won't go on the back of the skid steer. I don't know how many you have around in your area, but something with a 40K plus transmission and front assist's nice. I'll road stuff with our 40K tractor, other guys tow with a truck or load on a gooseneck like you do, and it don't take much longer by the time it's done going the same distance. As you know there is never a cheap used skidsteer, by the time parts are bought and it's gone to a dealer. but maybe you could pick something up and do the work yourself for KZbin content, so eventually you could have both and only use the skid steer when really needed, taking some strain off it with the tractor. You got to do it so we can only give an opinion, Thanks for the video, Take care.

About 5 years ago I bought a tracked skidsteer and looked for months for used pallet forks and a bale spear, without luck. I finally bought a combo unit from titan equipment. The portion of it that connects to the machine accepts forks or spears. It only takes a few minutes to swap them out.

A small articulated loader is great moving hay .I prefer a tractor with a hyd hay grab .We have skid loader and trac loader they as dirt work machines but in my opinion suck to get in and out of, have poor visibility and are miserable to work on. I would take a tractor over one any day if it is your only unit .

Skid steers are super handy machines, but for your application my opinion is a tractor with loader is better :)

I live on the side of a mountain in NH. I grew up on a cattle spread in OK. If you have to go to another zip code to find a tree, use a tractor and delight in all the 3 point attachments that come with. OTOH, if you define flat as a condition worth gambling that parking without the E brake won't mean hunting for the truck in the puckerbrush come morning then track loader is the holy grail.

Did I miss you getting a new trailer? Did the SS have the back-up camera? I thought I saw a monitor in the cab and thought that was pretty standard with the Cat SS's. I'm looking myself, need to run a few wheeled vs tracked machines.

Yes, the Cat has a backup camera that comes up on the monitor when in reverse. It’s pretty sweet, definitely a nice machine.

As someone with both... I would say I would probably go for the skid steer... it is like the swiss army knife of machines... now if all you are doing is moving round bales .. its ok... but for the range of attachments, it wins hands down... also for loading.. it can run circles around a loader tractor...

I agree I have both as well I have a skid steer with tires and in most ground it’s impossible to get stuck because you can use the bucket or forks to push your self out. In fact mine has never been stuck. Digging or driving fence post it’s hard to beat I’ve got a bush hog and five foot tumbleweeds don’t slow it down. What can I say basically it’s the tits.

My boss purchased a 2021 cat 279 slider and it is awesome I really think you would Love the cat skid steer they are awesome to run and very comfortable and powerful machines

Moved/unloaded 1000s of bales with a skid and loader tractor. Skid outdoes tractor in my opinion, and uses 1/3 the fuel.

Hauling bales with a light truck like that would be such a long process. We make around 800 bales a year hauling them 8 at a time would be a CHORE.

Ive never moved round bales with a skid steer, only a tractor but is it possible to use the pallet forks as a bale spear and just drive them into the bale?

You can get a powerful Snowblower for a skid loader. They will just need to know the flow, hp, and pressure.

Don’t be afraid of lifting the bale up high so you can see where you are going. I have 2 skid steers and can load out hay bales 3 times as fast as a loader tractor

I agree skid steer is a lot faster for moving them around. I think he is being cautious of lifting to high because he is using pallet forks and doesn’t want to flop one over on the roof of his buddy’s machine. On the flip side feeding sucks with a skid sreer compared to a tractor

I am not a big fan of skid loaders at least for me. They are expensive and really limited as to what they can do compared to a tractor and loader.

Get yourself a smaller telehandler. Basically same footprint, WAY better ride. For the most part easier servicing. Getting in and out is SO much easier AND safer. Every time you use it you'll walk away grinnin'. There's a reason you don't see many skids in Europe. Tracks aren't all sweetness and light. If you had one packed with frozen snow and no good way to thaw it out...

Thats because you’re supposed to clean the tracks of snow &/or mud. Prematurely wears out the sprockets and idlers. Especially in colder weather. That freezes, it’ll bust the tracks apart like twigs. Some of the downfalls of tracked machines.

@@Vickvineager Oh believe me I do. I've had them freeze while pushing snow. I have a propane weed burning torch that I use to thaw them out, works but still no fun when it's below zero. This isn't my first rodeo😊

Not a farmer, but I’ve watched several people just stab the bales with the forks. You might try a combination of both. Some stab, some cradle.

stick with a tractor or small articulated loader IT series with tool control to run post hole diggers and other attachments. track skids are money pits especially cat skids. we own 15 and not a day goes by we aren't repairing one.
