I got super excited when I saw this video! I am a self-proclaimed Demo Ranch and LunkersTV fangirl. Super appreciative of how in-depth you went on these knives. I'm not a knife guy either, and had no idea about the hinderer series. I don't think they really knew either, from what I heard, they just wanted a decent knife made in the U.S. to put their name on, I don't think they had anything to do with the design, just the packaging. I was shocked to see the comparison in design. I'm glad they performed decently, if for no other reason, I love watching Matt and Rob do well. It is hard to put something through it's paces when you already want something to do well or poor, and you did a great job staying completely impartial, I always appreciate that about the reviews you do. Thanks again!

What do you think about SOG Trident Elite? I am not a knife person, but I somehow love the look of Trident.
@souprocks44
@souprocks44 5 жыл бұрын
I carried one for about 6 years and it was a fantastic daily carry knife. I'm a bigger person so the size wasn't a concern, and I never had any issues with it. I've since moved to a much higher quality knife with a Benchmade. Looking back the Trident was a little overpriced honestly, but I got it when I was like 18 and it had that tacti-cool look that 18 year old me loved. Basically from use it's a fine knife, a little overpriced IMO. I never had any issues with it, I still have my very well worn one, but I wouldn't buy another one if that makes sense. Even though I never had any actual issues with the knife itself.

@ppolda 5 жыл бұрын
@@souprocks44 Thank you for your review! :)
@DocP91B
@DocP91B 5 жыл бұрын
I agree with @Alex Campbell about it being overpriced. I don't own one but I've handled one. The action is smooth, and it locks solid. AUS-8 is good steel, but unless you really need a line cutter I think you can probably find a better value for the money. If you want a "rescue" knife in that price range you can save half the money with the Kershaw Barricade. 8Cr13 is basically Chinese AUS-8, and it has G10 scales instead of plastic. It's not assisted but it's so smooth it doesn't need to be. If you like the look and feel of the SOG though go for it. It probably won't fail you.
@souprocks44
@souprocks44 5 жыл бұрын
@@DocP91B The line cutter isn't great honestly. The way the notch is cut in you have to go so deep to get to the blade. Plus you are going against the assist lock to pull on it since it just uses the blade. It's easily the weakest feature of the knife in my opinion. The lock is fantastic though, it's actually what pushed me to Benchmade was they had a better designed version of the lock from the SOG. I do wish they would replace the scales with G-10 and knock the price down to like 60. It would be fantastic, if not a bit gimicky then at least. I still look back fondly on it though. It served me well and has been retired to a sentimental nick nack box
@ppolda
@ppolda 5 жыл бұрын
@@DocP91B First of all, thank you very much for that info and suggestion. And also videos, of course. :) Tbh, the price and the glassbreaker are only reason, why I did not instabuy it. It probably is not much pocket-friendly for EDC purposes. I know your opinion about line cutters in general, but I think that it is a good option to have. Price of this Kershaw is very nice, but I don't like how it looks and absolutely hate its color. Seems like there is only orange version available. At least in my area. Isn't there any similiar knife without glassbreaker (or with removable one) in basic black/silver color you can recommend? :)

The blade steel is 8cr13mov. Here is a quick overview of that cheap Chinese steel. These are Chinese-produced steels that recently started showing up in Chinese-made knives. 9Cr is the top end of the series and is quite good - as good or better than AUS-8. Type 8Cr, the more common formulation, is worse than AUS-8: a little more prone to corrosion and not quite as hard. It is very cheap though, and when ground appropriately it can be a real winner from a value standpoint. Note: Don’t bother with anything less than 8Cr in this series. Steels 7Cr and below aren’t worth your time or money. They lack the carbon necessary to hold an edge, even during mild use

Can someone explain how a56-58 hrc knife doesnt hold an edge because of the steel used on it? Is the blade just not that high of hrc?
@DocP91B
@DocP91B 5 жыл бұрын
The RHC is a measure of how well the steel is hardened. But the physical properties of the steel are determined by the molecular organization of the elements in it. The right RHC gives you a blade that is hard enough to hold and edge without being so hard that it is brittle and breaks. The actual degree to which it holds the edge though, is up to the composition of the steel.

Dude.....you paid 400+ bucks for a wharncliffe pocket knife? Hinderer? Please explain to me what more you get for the extra 250+ bucks of a Spyderco or Benchmade? It's looks like a good blade.....but it also looks like a Kershaw Emerson CQB..... Don't understand.

@DocP91B 4 жыл бұрын
I guess the answer would be the same you would give a guy who asked what you get in a $200 Benchmade or Spyderco that you don't get in a $30 Kershaw. Or a BMW versus a Toyota. Or a Sig instead of a Hi Point. What I would say you are buying for the extra money of a Hinderer first is a hand built knife that has a quality factor you don't find most other places. You get top quality materials and engineering. You get a heft and a solid feel that you don't find most other places. You get lifetime support and service along with the knife. You are buying a knife that is built like a tank and practically indestructible, and has a low depreciation (of course depending on how much you abuse it) and a high resale value. And beyond that you are buying into a community of users that are really great people and have forums and groups to share experience and use with. All of this is worth it to some, but not worth it to others. It's like spending money on anything in the world. I had one troop under me that spent $2000 on rims for his little Honda. I thought that was insane. The Fist Sergeant actually had me sit him down and council him on financial responsibility. He was able to cite about 8 different reasons why it was worth it...to him. He always though my $400 knife was crazy expensive. Even though I took that to the field with every time we went and his car stayed home. You have to decide what is worth it to you. There are some brands even more expensive than the Big Hindy. Sorry thia is so wordy, but I thought your question deserved a real answer.

@@DocP91B to me there's a price level on quality.....that point where you don't get anymore knife (or gun) for the value of your dollar. There tools....meant to do a job or jobs..... Anybody that know knives knows there is a difference between a 30 dollar CRKT and a 200 dollar BM AFO2 or Gerber 06. Steel and construction being the most obvious....also being American made (Luv US). I can't see what would be so much better about a 400 plus dollar knife that looks like a plethora of others of similar quality (Not counting custom made knives that can be quite pricey and deservedly so, being one of a kind). That said....it's America and I probably came off like an ass..... rereading it..... Whatever floats your boat. I appreciate the long answer btw. Thank you for explaining.

Just gonna be completely honest, besides you and just a few people in these comments. No one gives a damn about hinderer similarities or whatever. 99% of people I know just want to know if it’s gonna be a good knife and it’s not gonna break the bank. And if it borrows elements from a super expensive knife for a much cheaper knife that does the same job then you better believe I’m buying the skif
@DocP91B
@DocP91B 5 жыл бұрын
I don't blame people who don't care about the Hinderer elements. I would wager that the 99% of the people that don't care aren't serious knife enthusiasts or collectors though. Stealing designs (and lets face it, it's stealing, not borrowing - it's not like they are going to give it back after a while, right?) is nothing new in the knife industry and cheaper production brands have been taking from the more expensive brands for decades. Some companies even completely counterfeit the high end knives. Like I said in my video I doubt that Matt or Rob even really knew what they were looking at because they are simply aren't big knife guys, and the original Skif put these designs out years ago. You can't fault the guys for what the company did years before they were involved. I also can't fault anyone who buys these knives. I only tested 4 but each one was well made and even the least expensive was as tough as the most expensive one I tested. I expect that most people who bought these initially bought them mainly because they are the official Demolition Ranch brand. Honestly, I've bought things for dumber reasons. The Hinderer issues might turn off some folk but I don't think it's going to hurt the brand much. It's just another day in the world of Chinese made knives.

@@benbaker321 it's not a problem. Not everyone is always concerned with integrity and stuff. Some people are raised with those kinds of values and some aren't. Everyine is entitled to their own opinion. But it's not so much and opinion as to whether or not you heard about the Skif knives. In the end, honestly, I was just curious as to how you would answer. I did notice that most people that don't care about where the design came from are also pretty cheap about what they carry in their pocket. Or maybe a lot of folks honestly don't really understand the difference between high quality and generic quality steel blades, soft steel veraus titanium frames, finely tuned pivots and hand fitted & assembled quality. A lot of people also never really had a job or situation where a good knife litterally could be the pivotal tool to their survival. So whatever. The really ironic part is the people who comment about "knife snobs" or not caring about the Hinderer design features or automatically get defensive about seeing a high quality, high cost knife here, are too defensive to actually bother listening to the fact that I give high praise to the actual construction and performance of the Skif knives.
