It's really starting to take shape now Robin and looking great too! I particularly like the joists, being able to run services both perpendicular and parallel to them, without drilling holes everywhere is very handy. While you're doing your first fixes, I'd recommend putting in Ethernet, any audio cables and also any CCTV wiring that you may want in the future. Wired Ethernet, particularly for TVs and desktop computers is so much more reliable than WiFi.

just an unasked for observation. Plant/machine/electric rooms it helps if the wall are a light colour it reflects light and also show up problems (oil leaks, rust, water puddles or were water has leaked). Same with machines those that are a 'light/bright' colour show up issues quicker than dark painted one. lots of people like black walls but from a maintenance standpoint it make seeing an issue just that much harder. In a light clean room it very hard to miss something that failed/leaked/exploded etc

Looking nice Robin. I get receesed bathroom cupboards made by a local bespoke kitchen company. They're ivory faced carcasses with mirrored doors, either 15mm with a 4mm mirror stuck on or now they can do a wrapped door which is mirrored, which is much lighter. I get extruded aluminium LED strip lights made to measure and sometimes fit these down the sides. They look really sleek. The long and the short of it is you can make them to any size you need, great for tall cupboards over a BTW pan for example. BTW, how many outlets do you need for the vacuum system ? I had a similar system in my previous house and with a 30 foot hose only needed one on the landing and one in the hall.

Great to see all the progress. What's the temperature like inside? Bet you're keen to get the electrics and heating in so that work can progress in a more comfortable conditions?!?
@ukconstruction5 жыл бұрын
Hi Nathan, the temperature inside is not to bad we have the underfloor heating ready to fire up, the building temperature fluctuates by 1 to 2 degrees up and down regardless of the external temperature which is a great testimony to the air tightness and insulation, but now winter is setting in you are right in saying that it would be nice to get the heating on!!!!

Robin, re customers and timings your bang on. The other that gets me down is people not pricing for all the work so quotes aren't like for like. Customer gets hammered by extras by the other builder because they didn't compare the quotes in the first place!
@timjones34275 жыл бұрын
In Australia the majority of houses are timber framed with brick veneer, so the brick is not structural. The framing code here states that you're not allowed to drill a hole greater than 25mm in a stud and only in the top or bottom third, so as you can see from this video a lot of these vacuum systems that are being installed, generally after frame inspection , cripple the structural integrity of a lot of the houses they're installed into. It's not impossible to install them without causing structural problems but I've rarely seen it done and maintain code.
@SkillBuilder5 жыл бұрын
Hi Tim I was thinking the same thing but those studs are not structural. The outer walls are untouched.
@timjones34275 жыл бұрын
Skill Builder, yes, I did assume as much. Robin is too good a carpenter to let something like that happen on one of his builds. Here in Australia we build to a minimum requirement rather than to a standard, which means the house is engineered backwards depending on roofing material, geographical wind loads etc. When you add to that the fact that the big residential builders are licensed to self inspect rather than have a council inspector, which is a massive conflict of interest, it all turns into a recipe for disaster when trades who don't know the framing code, like plumbers, electricians, scaffolders etc. start to drill holes in studs, cut out bracing straps and banging holes in brace boards to suit themselves. As a British born carpenter I can honestly say the Building codes back in Blighty are actually pretty good.

I think you still need to laser them in but the last bit of levelling can be done on the bubble. The problem is that the boxes don't have any adjustment on the lugs so they have to be spot bollock when you put them in.

Looking great Robin. Re . the potential issue with debris in the central vac system dropping back down the tubes, could you add a time delay onto the system so that when you unplug a vac hose/switch from a wall plate, the system runs for 2-3 minutes to make sure all the debris ends up in the beam unit in plant room?
@josoapification5 жыл бұрын
I used to fit beam for the sole suppliers in the U.K. the company is Keenans from Northern Ireland they do the heat recovery systems also It is simple to fit as I am sure you found out pat Keenan has been fitting beam vacuum systems for over forty years beam is made by Electrolux in Ohio and they use LAMB electric motors not made by Electrolux there are other vacuum systems companies Canadian CANAVAC SMARTVAC also American but they all mostly use the same LAMB motors beam is a good system designed for dry dust and hair etc but some people think it is a skip sucking up sticky sweets and food which will eventually block any bends on the pipe work good system if you are allergic to dust but you have to not put crap in the pipes or you will stop it working
@olgajoachimosmundsen46475 жыл бұрын
How come you split the wall around 4 mins with a beam in the middle instead of having the posts go all the way up? How do you make it nice and straight?
@Workshop-of-Allsorts5 жыл бұрын
Ref Beam, agree with everything you said about them 🙄disaster from start to finish.....I got the HR and Beam Hoover system from them, they have terrible after sales, took my money and that was it..... trust me and take my advice, I have installed the main Beam Hoover unit in my utility room which also has an extraction point from the Heat recovery, what you called the silencer blows out so much dust into the room and then because it’s beside an extraction point from the HR it sucks it up and cuts the life span of the filters such is the level of dust. Take my advice at this point and try to extend your beam exhaust out side of the house if you can. Love all the videos 😎👌

One thing i would say in absolute terms. Is make a record of everything, and i mean everything. Where you put everything, even the smallest thing. So in 20 years, when you may have someone coming round to do something, you can have a record, of something that may be vital, to you fixing it. I amazed how people make complex houses, and never keep a record of what they did, and where everything is. When you do such complex houses, make sure there is a record, of where you put everything, and why you put it there. So if anyone needs to fix something in like 10 years, then can go and get this info. I hate the way when people that build complex houses, keep no records, of how and where everything was done. So when its all finished, people would have no idea where and what everything is. Instead of keeping it in your head, about everything, write it all down. So incase someone else may need to fix something, they have some idea from your records, instead of guessing, why you did this, or where you did this. Instead of being arrogant and saying i will still remember in 10 years. Write down everything, showing and explaining where and how everything was done. So in 10 or 20 years, if you have a problem in this complex house your making, you could refresh yourself, or someone else can see in clear written or diagram form, where and how everything you did was done. Thats my only advice to you, or anyone building there own house. You do not know if in 10 or 20 years, that you will remember. Do not be arrogant about this, just keep as many written records or diagrams, of where and how everything was done. Also in these records, explain why you did something, so you can refresh your memory, or someone reading these notes can see your logic in the future, if you or someone else needs to fix something. So you have no guessing, in 10 or 20 years, or someone that you bring in maybe to fix something then, will save them time. Nice video by the way. Nice house, i agree with roger, take as long as you need to get it done the right way the first time. Do not be arrogant that you will remember in 10 or 20 years. For me, when a person builds a complex house, it should be required by law, that they keep records, on everything done, to make sure who buys it in future understands, how and why everything was built the way it was. When you build a complex house as your doing, do not be arrogant that you will remember everything in 10 or 20 years. Or if someone else needs to fix something you did, it would help them enormously if they can see some sort of record, of how and why you did something. It will make it so much easier for you in future, if you do this. Just saying this would be my one tip, for anyone building a house. Especially applies to anyone building a complex house. ie keep records, of how and why you did everything.
