With 44 years in the building industry I can honestly say that carpenters of Dan's calibre are few and far between. I don't think I have ever met one that could pull off a roof like this one!

I swear if Dan decided to do a degree in nuclear physics, pure mathematics, etc., etc., he'd do it with ease. Amazing comprehension of the practical applications of geometry, as evinced by his roofing square. Great bloke as well as an incredibly bright one. Well done, mate.

Roofing in good weather is satisfying work. When i did my brother’s roof in Surrey. It rained so much he had to spend an extra £ 8000 for a temporary tin top roof. The house was still being lived in during the renovation. So it had to be covered anyway before we opened up the roof. I haven’t done any roofing in about 4 years now. I do fire regulation joinery work for independent living schemes for housing associations. I have to take my coat off in winter at work. It’s like working in a sauna. All association folds have to be kept at a permanent 25 degrees. Roofing is usually the most satisfying work for any 1st and 2nd fix carpenters but it’s a young carpenters game.

A Question: At around 7:00 minutes the lad is using his Festool plunge saw and track to cut the bevels and he lifts the saw and the track is attached. How is the saw attached to the track to enable it to lift both? I've tried increasing the pressure of the cams that are used to eliminate play and sideways movement, but that isn't very successful. Another good video from the folk at Skill Builder, they are a veritable mine of useful information.
@Ultimate-roofing-square. Жыл бұрын
It’s not a plunge saw. Think it’s a HK saw and it clips to the guide rail.

@@Ultimate-roofing-square. Many thanks for taking the time to reply. My mistake, I haven't used, or even seen, the HK saws, it was a treat to myself getting the Festool plunge saw (which is excellent) and I mistook it for the HK. You guys are a real advert for what is good in the building trade, keep up the good work.

@@RG-Factotum more than welcome. One problem with the HK is the 55 isn’t quite big enough and the 75 is only available in 240 v. The plunge saw is a great tool. Thanks for watching.

It's great to see you back Dan but you didn't half bring a real headache with that roof. At point 1.45 on the video the 29° you talked about is this plumb cut you would normally have and a 38° seat cut. Although these figures along with 90° don't add upto 180°.
