I think saying this is "pre alpha" is a bit "incorrect." This definitely feels like late alpha or early beta, but pre alphas are more proof of concept than anything. Think...star citizen. This, while it has a lot of sucky things, is definitely beyond that. This is a game in need of 6 months of polish. If they had taken several months and polished the sound, the combat, the quests, the emptiness of the world, etc, it could have changed everything.

While I was getting my animation and game design degrees, one of the most prominent things the head of department repeatedly drilled into his students was, "Make an incredible short experience, not a long mediocre one." It was one of the most impactful things I learned from him, and it applies to all treks of life. So many people do not know how to manage their resources and the scope of what they can produce to a high level end product. Of course we all want more, bigger, better, but we rarely have the resources to achieve all of it.
@sparda90603 жыл бұрын
The thing about game design is that when we do get a game that is long and is full of great experiences, it usually have the entire teams contribution in the creativity to populate the game world with enough cool and exciting experiences. Creativity can't just only be consolidated to a few people like art designer, game director, head of game design or mechanics. The whole team could come up or just randomly have creative things to add to the game spontaneously, if they are able to add it into the game. Honestly you can't expect 1 person like the game director to come up with a lot things to fill into the expansive world of a game that is 20+ hours long, they run into a dry spell on ideas. So having the whole team brainstorm to compile things to add helps. The way publishers are cracking the whips on the dev teams today, that really can't be allowed due to publisher's strict time constraints and scheduling.

I think developers try to replicate the size of famous open worlds, such as those in Rockstar games, but they fail to add any depth or nuance to them. Over the years, I used to dislike Rockstar. I thought their game design was linear and old-fashioned. But looking back three years after RDR2... I've been taking Rockstar for granted. They just make high-quality, well-polished games with amazing open worlds, which is honestly rare nowadays. Their worlds are beautiful, full of life, have interesting random events, memorable characters, solid gameplay, even great music and sound design. It's no wonder they take almost a decade in between game releases. The only open world game that has come close in quality is Ghost of Tsushima, but as Skill Up said, GoT was more of a super refined Ubisoft game (still very good). It is hard to make an amazing open world that is as large and in-depth as those Rockstar has made historically. And I think many game companies only aim for scale/size in order to show off in trailers.
@yoshighomi3 жыл бұрын
@@LASAGNA_LARRY I agree... Rockstar games are so well done because they take the time to polish. CDP Red mentioned "Will launch when it's ready" Rockstar shows this quote without mentioning a word. The big thing about the Arkham games for me was the synergy between all the elements when it came to combat. The camera, sound, visual ques all combine and work together to enable you to make some really good tactical choices that make you feel like batman, are challenging to pull off but aren't so compressed that it's confusing. It's a really great balance in giving the player the tools and hints to be great but also giving them a hard challenge. This game looks like it does neither.

Not to mention the gameplay elements that are littered throughout the world so you're never just running around endlessly. i havent played this, but i have to say, this review didn't... unsell me on the game you know? like the complaints about the sound were so petty to me like i honestly found it... fine?? it's just not loud bangs and effects, i guess. the only thing i found weird was the catapult scene being absolutely quiet lmaoo the complaints about the lack of feedback in combat also seemed quite petty nitpicks. you know when he said he adjusts his expectations based on the size of the studio? this didn't seem like that at all lmao. like ive seen worse combat, even just from looking, from much bigger studios. as far as the repetitive mechanic, yeah. i'm not sure if his intention was to make it sound worse than the average, but it also seemed pretty regular to me. the assault-map-conquering thing and the repetitive layouts are definitely not that rare. and i agree that it can be boring, which is why i really like the "skipping" mechanic?????? take a game like valhalla for example.... after pillaging 30 cities you start to be kind of over it. i would have loved the ability to skip some of those lmao. however, valhalla had other elements that made the game worth playing, like story and "camp" mechanics (and listen i'm not saying that it was an oscar worthy narrative or anything, but i'm quite easy to please with game plots). if i had to critique anything about biomutant's world, i would say it's empty, for sure. and the plot is weak, okay. but repetitive? idk man, anything gets repetitive after you do it for more than fifteen hours. maybe this tendency to release 100+ hour long videogames nowadays is why i can't take that particular criticism seriously, it seems like something everyone complains about all the time, and to me that's not a GAMEPLAY issue, just a matter of games being way too long. ps.: he's really out here trying to tell me that this game doesn't resemble botw when that game id also empty as all hell?? come on, man.....

I'm about 26 hours into Biomutant, level 35 and its probably going to take me about 50-60 hours to complete everything which I'm happy its not just a run and done type of game . Sure this game isn't for everyone, but I think this review was a bit too harsh in my opinion. I love the customization this game has from the many different styles of armor to finding pieces to create a badass 2-hander Giga-Blade with a bone for a handle. There's secret mounts from bats to automatons you can ride on, and crafting pieces. A few things I disliked was of the many reskins on enemies and I think combat could have been tweaked a little to make the combat feel a little bit more responsive. I love how they include an "area completed" pop up to show you grabbed everything from that area( just think how if they didn't include this how many people would be pulling there hair out asking "did i find everything??") Game runs great on max settings. People complain about the loot feeling the same everywhere but don't tell you that you can scrap these pieces for more scrap and upgrade armor and weapons with it( It takes ALOT to fully upgrade weapons, so keep that "worthless" loot coming). I do love the fact the game gives you the option to end the war early if you want with the other tribes, a lot of people do this. If you do this option you cannot obtain the remaining tribes unique weapons and there wung-fu's though as a drawback; which some how was not mentioned in this review? Final standings; I love this game. I had no expectations coming into this game so that could sway my opinion to a brighter side of things.

Reached this point today. Eventually, it becomes pointless. Eventually you realize the next quest you're going to do is just a rehash of the previous one. Eventually you realize that exploring the open world has no real benefit, or pretty underwhelming if any. It was ambitious, I would give it that but I would say temper your expectations when you pick this up because you are going to need that. The developer's last Reddit post about their plans for the game was kind of the final nail in the coffin. Might have to slow down on pre-ordering now with the recent launch disasters I've fallen for (Cyberpunk, Outriders) and really wait a week until the reviews come in. The way the enemies have no reaction to your attacks was so frustrating to watch. Attacks depending on whether they are light, heavy, or special should carry different weight in a fight to give combat texture. The traversal should have wind and grass rustling too, but yea I don't need another huge open world to get bored in.

I want to start this comment off by saying that I genuinely love Shill Up’s videos, and can very much appreciate his honesty and approach to reviewing. The industry needs ALOT more people like him. With that being said - Ahem. The need resides within my soul to let out a small but confident war cry in favor of this game in hopes that it is able to amass a small cult following in the coming years. I want to make it clear, it is NOT my intention to come here and disagree with Mr. Skill Up simply for the sake of doing so, nor is it to be a troll. I just really want to say that Biomutant, despite its shortcomings and undercooked elements, is a beautiful game. Not just visually either. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but there is something about this game that has enabled it to take a seat amongst my favorite games I’ve played throughout my life. I can’t help but feel like I’m crazy when I watch/read any coverage on this game and see it being met with lukewarm, if not, straight up bad reception; because when I play it I am taken and totally immersed in a game world that I’ve never quite experienced anything like before. The environments, design, enemies, and overall feel of the game really bring to life this sense of wonder and excitement to explore. While the things to do may lean into Ubisoft territory of busy work and backtracking for nearly pointless things, for me it just doesn’t feel like pointless busy work. The variety of enemies (at least visually) and the environments themselves really make me feel like I’m embarking on a grand journey through this imaginative world of dangers that come in all shapes and sizes, and taking on something truly greater than my small rat like character. As for the combat, sure, at times it can feel floaty and like it lacks impact, especially with the melee, but I’ve found that if you take the time and perform the combos and different wung fu moves, combat can have a tiny bit more oomph than It does if you just mash the attack button. While it can definitely use work, I have hope that it can be polished up with updates, and even if it can’t, I honestly enjoy the combat well enough to be excited to enter new areas and take on all of the wild looking enemies. Many of which are variants of common enemies which I have never seen before. Aside from combat, the story isn’t anything remarkable, it’s nice and light hearted though, and it helps add to the overall sense of wonder that blankets the rest of the game. Hell, I even enjoy the narrator. I haven’t turned the frequency down from the default setting even once yet. I don’t know, I don’t want to sound like a contrarian. And this probably sounds outright stupid to a lot of people. But I truly think Biomutant, in its current state, is still an amazing game. If there is ANY part of you that feels despite the reviews and coverage of the game at the moment, you can still potentially find something to love in this game, please please pick it up at retail price. We need to support AA games and developers like this if we want to have any hope of more unique games in the future that are willing to take a different approach in a couple of categories and execute on a vision. There is SO much more I want to say about this game, but it’s about 4am, no one is going to read all this anyway, and i need to get back to playing Biomutant. Thanks Experiment 101, thanks Skill Up, and thank you surfshark. Peace.

I went from not hearing about this game, to being really interested, to being disappointed within a week.

Within seconds my whole youtube subscription is flooded with Biomutant reviews and gameplay but I know which one to click first 🤘 Edit: 10 secs into the review, realized I didn't read the title, uhh Ohh that doesn't sound good, I really wanted this game to be good even though I didn't know I would buy it, it just feels good when ambitious games from small studios do great, apparently not the case here
