Terrific insight into your build process. Thank you for letting me be a fly on your workshop wall. Hope she goes well! Would love to see her on the water!

Great build and video on the process! Is that the Stonefly 12 from Jeff Horton? I built a sof kayak, plans from Dave Gentry and really enjoyed the process and love using it. And thinking about building a canoe. Again, great job and looks beautiful.

That rings a bell. Yes, just looked it up. But I would make a couple of edits for preference, I would make the middle cross section a little wider and I don't think the gunwales needed to be quite as large but I used a heavy hard wood.

Also, converting all the dimensions for the templates took a little time. I digitised the shapes then used a CNC plotter I just so happened to have knocking about! To get the frame shapes really well drawn onto the ply

Beautiful boat! What did you use to treat the skin?
@Tlohretep3 жыл бұрын
I used a single part yacht varnish. But if I were to do it again I would use the 2 part stuff having seen it on another boat since. This finish is lighter and more rubbery. Although the skin I used was actually 100% waterproof anyway.

Are you selling the plans to your skin on frame canoe or a thumb drive with the downloadable plans?
@Tlohretep Жыл бұрын
I do not have them, I used a book as the bases of the frame, I can't remember where I got this, but it was all in old measurements and took a lot of converting. If I were to rebuild I would change the form somewhat, It tracks really nicely in the water but I would make the centre part of the frame wider and possibly more shallow for stability and increase the curve up to the bow and stern slightly. I would reduce the weight of the rim stays, they are over engineered and do not need to be as bulky as they are. So, if I were to do plans, I would change a fair bit prior to publication.

what plans did you use.

Fuselage Frame Boats: A guide to building skin kayaks and canoes £11.75 Amazon.co.uk. -- but I don't like the imperial measurements. And I adapted the design and materials a little.

Haha, yes I get that comment occasionally with my sof kayak - mainly from older people that are thinking of the old canvas canoes. Do some research and you may surprised at how durable they are. I took mine down a rock infested river and I hit one that went down the length of the boat. I had visions of the Titanic. But once finished the trip, I could hardly tell it got hit. Still, I it isn’t as tough as wood or Kevlar but I love mine for the many advantages it provides.

Dump the soundtrack! I had to turn the sound off to finish watching. It’s like fingernails on a chalk board
