The artists chose skin-tight outfits because muscles are fun to draw. Simple as that.
@SgtSupaman
@SgtSupaman 3 жыл бұрын
A more real world explanation is that, when artists were designing superhero outfits, they started from the base that was, arguably, the first superhero's costume, Superman. Meanwhile, Superman's outfit was based on circus strongmen (because he was to be the strongest of the strong). Of course, strongmen only had to worry about lifting things, so they wore tight and lightweight clothing that wouldn't interfere with their acts. Thus, the designs actually derive from a practical purpose.

Not even more fun to draw; just straight up easier. To get a proper hero pose to look right you need to plot out and to some degree sketch out the character's muscular anatomy. Then you plot the clothing on top of that and consider materials and physics...easier to just do the anatomy, say "done" and send it to the colorest while saying "make this naked character look not naked." Thus every superhero wearing spandex was born.

And Superman's design was based on 1920's Heavy Weight Lifters and Circus Strong Men, they just added the cape on top of what was at the time obviously athletic tights.
@ianwright4255

Batman uses his cape to also conceal his body movements. With the cape flapping away, the bad guys have a hard time trying to aim for center mass. This backed fired once and the bad guys, shooing at the cape, shot up Night Wing, who was standing behind Batman, almost killing him. This was shown in an early Batman Beyond comic. This is why Batman ditched the cape when he builds the Tech suit seen in Batman Beyond

Pretty much. Everything about Batman's armor is about serving a need. Either as protective armor, item storage, or psychological impact. In contrast Superman's outfit is about invoking a sense of grandure, more symbol then function.

@secretbaguette
@secretbaguette 3 жыл бұрын
But tight clothes are a lot worse if you're considering say, getting into a fight, and having a knife pulled on you. If a guy pulls a switchblade, say, he's likely focusing on cutting you to ribbons. If you're wearing jeans (stab resistant, nearly slash proof) and a baggy sweatshirt, your choice of clothing either breaks up your outline, making it harder to cut the flesh beneath the clothes, or just straight up blocking them. (One step I took a bit further as a teen was wearing a legitemate woll greatcoat, which happens to be very durable, as well as being great at keeping oneself warm) Such principles can likewise be applied to stealth. A baggy sweatshirt will break up your outline, making you harder to identify as being a human, especially in the dark with muted shades of whatever choice color. It's just different optimization for different purposes.

Good video. Another thing to take into account is super speed. When a character is moving at incredible speeds the more loose or bulky their clothing is the more it adds up. Imagine how much drag the Flash would experience running faster than light if he was wearing a hoodie and sweat pants instead of his super tight suit. Or if someone was fighting an opponent of similar speed and their outfit was covered in armor. They would be at a disadvantage because their movement would require a factional amount of extra energy and time to execute actions. Also, another reason why Superman wore a skin tight suit is because he has a forcefield around his body which has a very close proximity to his skin. So by wearing a skin tight suit he is able to have it be underneath his forcefield and thus totally protected. I’m sure it was just written as an excuse to justify him not ending up naked after every intense fight, but it’s something.
@Ocato92
@Ocato92 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think that Flash experiences a lot of drag. It's not physical superspeed, it's magical one. Speed Force is often used to justify why he can grab, and move people without turning then into mush, which would inevitably happen if you accelerate someone to Mach 5 in a split second. Because of that is seems to be more of a time manipulation or spacetime distortion force, that just manifests as running. Thus I don't think he's experiencing that high of a drag. The actual physical speedster would have to have suit that is extremely high-temperature resistant. I dream of a movie scene including speedster wearing casual clothing, than he accelerates in slow motion, and the cloths burn in the atmosphere revealing his/her suit!

Agreed, though I think he missed one point about capes though - if you are wearing skin tight or skimpy you might just need something extra to stay warmer and more comfortable at those moments when you are not right now fighting, but the job isn't done - all those points when you are flying the flag, co-ordinating the team, waiting for the scumbags to show, or just being noticeable in the hopes being there keeps things civil so the poor city doesn't get smashed to bits...(yes the superhero might be durable enough to not really need it, but would you choose to be uncomfortable when you can choose comfort) As long as you can release it easily when it matters.. Also if you are grappling having the opponent reach for you, and just tear off the cuff from your sleeve gives you an advantage - they have committed but failed to actually secure your arm, so you should get a free shot or two into them - so loose billowy but fragile could actually make sense - its going to get inconveniently torn to shreds, but conveniently they are going to find it hard to get a good grip on you - making your victory easier, and I assume you can afford some more cloth... Though that would be very situational based on the wearers exact blend of abilities - if you are not heavy/strong enough that the ripping of the clothing will easily pull you off balance for instance its a terrible idea...

then of course there is the practicality of enhancing somebody's power with a device or outfit. like the MHA girl who makes objects from her skin out of her own body's lipids. her having a fair amount of skin visible is necessary for her to say 'pull a rope out of her cleavage' so she can lower team-mates down a cliff or haul injured civilians out of harm's way. the guy with the 'navel-lazer' needs a focus lens in his belt buckle. even the Main Character figures out that his 'super strength' is destroying his bones ligaments and joints no matter how hard he trains his muscles. so he needs special gloves, and bracers, and shoes, and shin-guards that can handle his strength and protect his body from his own power.

Agreed. I could see a superhero having a closet full of disposable capes. Also, capes are designed to easily come off if they are yanked, so there is no risk of being pulled backwards to your death by your cape. It can even be a good distraction if you are grappling with an opponent. They will grab your cape, thinking they have a hold on you, and they will be caught off guard when it easily comes off.

@Lonaticus

Batman tends to be the exception when it comes to a lot of things, in this case capes. He uses his as a glider, as a disguise and to conceal weapons inside, or conceal their initial trajectory. Another interesting case of a semi-cape is old depictions of spider-man where he had this web-cape underneath his armpits that helped him glide. So for characters with few or no superhuman traits capes make sense. They can be used as shelter, disguise, gliders or places to conceal hidden weapons. It is not justified though for characters with superhuman strength since they don't need them for any of those uses, except maybe concealment.

Marvel solved the “damaged costumes” problem many years ago (the early 60s I believe) with Reed Richards’ development of “unstable molecules” and they then made everyone’s costume out of this. Never liked this idea but it solves the issue of a costume getting destroyed during super battles.

Not everyones (Spider-man for one makes his himself). But yeah, a lot of them have unstable molecule costumes. Well, A lot of the ones with enhanced damage resistance. Hawkeye having an unstable molecule costume wouldn't help.

The x-men also have a similar fabric created using shi'ar tech. It is as bullet proof as kevlar and resists cutting but spandex flexible. Tho i do believe they did have the unstable molecule uniforms for a while as well.

@@LordBraddington Kevlar isn't even that bulletproof. Any rifle round can go through a lot of kevlar (like 5+ vests of kevlar, front and back). That's why people wear plate carriers with steel or ceramic plates inserted.
@LordBraddington
@LordBraddington 3 жыл бұрын
@@brianwyters2150 kevlar has its limitations, true. Tho i didn't say it was made of kevlar... Just a similar level of resistance whilst retaining the flexibility of spandex. If these characters (the xmen, even FFs Sue and Johnny) were standing back taking gun fire, sure, armouring up might help even with force fields and protective powers. But the majority of Heroes, including the blasty types usually end up fighting in close quarters where the heavier armor would be less helpful, since they all seem to rely on manoeuvrability more than tanking hits.

Hulk, Thing, and Namor casually say screw clothes😂. So the reasons I got from the video were: -practicality (less loose fabric means less to grab and exploit) - cost efficient/durability (less fabric to get damaged then less time and money needed to repair it) -maneuverability (tight fabric means less air resistance and more freedom of movement) I find these agreeable but the major pro for skintight outfits/less fabric is concealment. It’s easier to hide your hero suit under your clothes when you’re already wearing it. Only con is the hot summer weather with the added layers. So missed advantages: -concealment - iconic (sometimes having bright tight clothes leaves an impression to the foes the heroes defeat and their would be fans) Of courses some heroes don’t need tight clothes depending on the power. Psylocke before she got switched into an Asian body had an armored cloak whilst she was in her original body with no complex martial arts skills. Given her power and skill set it makes sense to protect the one who can knock out the entire room with a thought. Also makes sense since she wears it after getting attacked by Sabertooth. Weird tangent, aside from titillation why did the comic writers design female ninja outfits to be tight swimsuits with exposed skin? I thought maybe they were inspired by aerobic tights but then they got rid of the tights on the appendages. Examples include Psylocke and Elektra. For logical skimpy characters Emma Frost and Mileena make sense. Both use their sexuality as part of their identity and as a weapon.
