I think what everybody is forgetting is that maybe the newer MPCs don’t hit the way the older ones do right out of the box, BUT can you make the newer MPCs hit like the older ones with some simple mixing techniques? YES

EA Ski's gripe is that Akai could use higher quality conveters and capacitors to make the new MPC's sound better.
@unworthyServant08
@unworthyServant08 Жыл бұрын
This is the summary of his argument, but that is not a realistic ask, unless, as he mentioned in a follow-up video, Akai releases a "pro" MPC, which will be much more costly (probably around 4-5k), and limited in run. The upgrades will be more related to filters, I think, adding analog filters instead of digital ones, and still using converters similar to the ones in the X, but of greater quality, similar to what you get in high-end interfaces. But will Akai truly field such an idea? R&D is not cheap, and having them invest in what is a niche ask, to satisfy a few customers who have the money to pursue alternative solutions, may not seem that attractive... If anything, it could help to open up a market for reputable technicians to make such upgrades for anyone who wants the "upgrade." It'll cost a pretty penny, but the user will get what he/she wants.

@@AJWise I know that. I meant that more like them will show up. After all, opportunity presents itself where a need is made known. As of now, I know only of Black Lion Audio doing upgrades for the X, but no other MPCs. What about the Live, or One, or Keys 61? There's another youtuber who posted having done something similar to his Live, but I don't know that he's commercialized the process yet. Needless to say, a good number of vendors may likely come up as a result of this.

At the end of the day there are a lot of tricks you can do to mangle your sound to get it how you like. if the bit rate is the sound couldn't you use a bit crusher? The new mpc has the vintage modes you can turn on as a start for sure. I myself really like the lofi button on 404sx. You are right about the prices going up

Great video! Let's say that Akai pays attention and DOES improve the quality of the new MPCs (I say "improve" but even still, their devices seem good to me). What we can expect are even higher prices in exchange for it now because the demand is there. As you touched on, this niche is worldwide now and as the saying goes, "You can't put the genie back in the bottle". Maybe an independent out there will produce a post-mod of the MPC X SE that incorporates what the MPC Community is chomping at the bit for...

Thanks Doc. I’ve posted and said the same thing you’ve said on multiple videos. The trend is for cleaner sound over the years. This makes it much easier to manipulate with top-of-the-line studio gear after recording, as opposed to older gear. The current conversation is one of nostalgia and attachment. Certain OG’s, for all their achievements and wealth of knowledge, want everything to be as it was “back in the day,” but that’s not the case for MANY things. And as gear changes/evolves, it also affects how music is made, new styles come in, other styles become niche, etc… I’m learning the piano no3, and reading up on the history of the instrument shows how improvements in string, escapement, action and cabinet tech have changed how composers composed, and players even evolved their playing style! It’s a synergistic thing: improvement in tech always influence users of sais tech creatively, and also vice versa, where users of the tech influence the improvement of it. Which means the musical community at large has also somewhat influenced the release of gear with newer, more transparent converters, so artists can shape it into the sound they want. Even just look at the history of microphones, and how they’ve improved over the decades to the clean mic’s we now value highly in our studios for allowing us to capture pristine recordings and edit those recordings as we please.
@unworthyServant08
@unworthyServant08 Жыл бұрын
Also, in the snippet of the Dubs Banger video you shared, I wonder if he level-matched both samples… it seems he didn’t and that’s why he says the X sounds thinner and airier. And airiness is a good thing too, a sign that the full audio spectrum was recorded faithfully, and the top end wasn’t filtered out, due to sample rate limitations. But the thinness is likely due to the samples not being level matched. In another video by CEDDMACK on his MusicTechWorks channel, he compared the 60 II and the X. The X’s bass sounds fuller, and the top end is airier, more natural. Meanwhile, the 60 sounds more compressed and darker, no doubt due to the filtering happening on both ends of the spectrum when recording samples in.

@Orpheus.Machine
@Orpheus.Machine Жыл бұрын
@@unworthyServant08 It was indeed not level-matched as far as I can see. And simply put a compressor plugin on the MPC X after sampling : problem solved ... It's pretty obvious that the MPC 2000 waves in that video are compressed, probably because of the way that maschine samples. I prefer to have a sample with a lot of dynamics. You can compress that as much as you want or keep all the details. I prefer to decide myself what way I want to go with the signal, not the maschine doing the choice for me and not offering me any options.

I understand what you are saying about the circuitry being unavailable, obsolete and all that. But I think what EA-Ski is getting at is if Dave Rossum can duplicate, design and reissue the SP-1200 drum machine and sampling circuitry as closely as. possible to the OG 1200 why can't Akai do the same? If you watch EA's explanation as to why he's disappointed in the new MPC X SE is because he worked with Akai and there were promises that they didn't fulfill. That's why he's upset about the results of the SE. But Is duplicating a retro MPC really asking too much or impossible? Again If Dave Rossum can do it for the 1200, Akai can do it easily. And I'm sure it would be a huge pre-order market for it.

@@thablackkat9905 Fair point. EA also stated that to work around that issue, just do pre orders for that niche market you stated. I think it would be more than 50-100 though. And do an entry level MPC for their target market. That way it works out for everyone.
@WaynePryce
@WaynePryce 14 күн бұрын
Now that the market is saturated with cheaper made mpcs, guitar center can't even give them away. So much that the flagship trade in is 800 from 1500 brand new. Now they had to seek out Roger Linn because the product has fell off drastically. I have an X and a 2k and i dont need compressors or all thst other tweaking stuff when i use my 2k. The X and my DAW have the same sound. So basically the newer mpcs is nothing more than a cheap laptop with a controller instead of a qwerty pad. @thablackkat9905

Honestly; I love the sound of vintage gear. I would LOVE those great sounding old school parts in current MPCs. An MPC X that sounds like a 60 or a 3000? That would be the ultimate. But even without those amazing sounding parts, current MPCs are still great machines. The work flow and features are awesome and they keep getting better. The sound is neutral but it's good, clean, clear, and can be made to sound like whatever you want with other equipment like the Neve EQ that you mentioned and/or other gear and/or plugins. I have some vintage gear that I use when I'm in the mood to get into my nostalgic bag but for the most part my modern MPCs are my go to machines because of the superior workflow. If and when Akai makes a holy grail MPC - modern workflow and features with a great good quality vintage style sound - I will be the first in line to buy it but in the meanwhile, I'm very good with my X.

Like Akai does for everything else, they should add an old school signal path, and charge for it as an add-on. Then we'll see how many consumers truly are willing to pay for it. I would. But. My 2000, 2500 even MPC60, I would never go back to because of the workflow. Sitting for hours tracking individual external synthesizer modules using MIDI time code or SMPTE Was the primary reason I took an unfortunate detour into composing in DAWs. I love the updated MPCs as they retain the workflow of the original MPC software, but add the benefit of DAW features like exporting, soft synthesizers, etc etc.

The MPC3000 is 16 bit. The 2000 and XL use the same brown burr converters as the 3000, which were and still are very highly regarded. DACs may have gotten cheaper since then, but I wouldn’t necessarily say they have gotten better. There have been great sounding converters since the late 70s, for those who could afford them. I wouldn’t be surprised if the converter chips in an X cost mere pennies, where those in the 3000 would have cost a few dollars You will still be able to fix a 2000xl long after you cannot fix an MPC X. People can make new chips, if there is a dedicated user base. Look at the Juno 106, you can buy third party replacement DCO chips for them right now

I'm tired of this topic. I see why people who have high technical knowledge don't jump into these discussions. There's so much negative in the MPC community and people who thrive on that kind of energy. There is a desperate need for people to learn how to mix so that they can create the sounds they are after. The old tech of those era's is long gone and no one is going to bring it back. It's just not financially viable for Akai to try to downgrade the components in a machine that they have invested lots of money into r & d already. I agree not everybody that uses the mpc is into lofi hip hop so getting a clean and clear sound is more important. It would be the equivalent of the Chicago Bulls asking Michael Jordan to comeback as their starter, that is just not going to happen. There are a million ways to dirty up your sound and yes dirty is the truth. The things I hear when I listen to all of these examples is added noise on top of the sound that is being played. The signal to noise ratio is terrible in those old 16bit machines. There was more noise from the circuits that affect the transients of sounds that have an impact. I am a force user and I love the 32bit adc and dac converters it's true digital meaning what I am putting into it is what I am getting back without the extra noise from the circuits. If I want that punch I add that in post it's just too easy to do in the mix. I would say to Akai please fix the sound of the emulations that you provide with the current machines to make them have more of the noise of those old circuits and provide more machine models. They also need to do a video showing how to use the emulations that is something they never talk about. Get Andy Mac to do a old school hop hop/lofi beat session showing how to downgrade you machine using emulations and bit reduction. I think if they fixed their models that would resolve all of these complaints about sound quality. The ability to emulate circuits has advanced greatly over the years. I don't see anyone doing any comparison tests using the included emulations that were provided in the current machines software pack. Page 82 and 83 in the manual there is a vintage mode and you can change the bit depth from 24 to 16 which would affect all recorded audio.

If I am going to do a lot of extra work just to make everything that comes out the MPC One to sound better, which is what the machine should be doing out the gate, then im just not gonna get it and choose an alternative.

It's not the 12-bit chip, my man. If anything the higher the chip bit, the better. The issue is the circuit board. Analog Circuit boards are going to always give you warmer and punchier sounds than the new digital circuit board, because sound is being produced or passthru big transistors, capacitors, resistors, etc. On digital circuit boards, sound is being produced or passthru small gated-chips. So don't blame Akai, blame progress. If Akai gave us what we want you'd be looking at a $3999 machine.

The beat gear snobs always hated the mpc 500 saying essentially the same thing these dudes are saying about the current MPC generation. Now everyone talks about the 500 like it has potential. Why are people suddenly attracted to the mpc 500 and it's aesthetic? Back then everyone was sounding like ea ski. Old school dudes talking smack about products and the producers who use said equipment/product. This gear argument is coming from dudes who are musically mediocre. Who cares what mpc is being used of everyone still sounds the same. Even so called real hip hop is pretty generic nowadays IMO. i'm actually kind of surprised ave mcree didnt know who ea ski was 🤷🏿‍♂ but anyways i get what ski was saying about spending $2500 dollars on the flagship product and not getting the same kind of sound etc. but also nowadays noone is tracking out beats a track at a time... you can export the wav files immediately and process and mix the wavs to sound however you want if you are skilled and know what you're doing. akai is a far different company from what it was in the late 80s and 90s on up and like most companies they will repackage the same product 100 different ways and sell it as long as they know ppl will buy it. akai NEVER intended on puting any development into the output stage of these devices thats why they included a "vintage" mode 😉type emulation into the software because they knew ppl might be looking for the sound similar* to classic-model mpc's. i looked at this SE just like when the 2500 came out with the SE 🤷🏿‍♂ same model with a few upgrades. its marketing...its just like iphones, they make one product and repackage it many times with minor changes and get another $1000 from humans EVERYtime. it is what it is. akai is supposed tho be coming with some mini mpc, thats what im curious about..they need something stripped down and even more "basic" than the entry level One but with features the One doesnt have to go toe-to-toe with the sp404. again that marketing and how you sell ALL your product line.

X is $2500, we are in 2023, and we have access to incredible technology, therefore we can make chips that give us that thump, Dave Rossum is doing it with the SP -1200, Sequential, look at how many great converters are out there, look at what RME is giving us with incredible pricing, so this is on Akai, nothing should sound that "Airy" and the BIG problem is that when you use all 8 outs you got a wall of "Air" and converters 3-8 are inferior in their reproduction of the signal this is well know fact that is why Akai with class compliant USB. This is why they put the Brown Burr converter in the X SE (not the best one they could have chosen). This is not about what you can do in the studio, it would be wast of precious studio time, Eqing 8 channels when you know how things are suppose to sound. Yeah you can only use output 1-2 and just rack from there, then what is the point of putting 3-8 outputs, might as just make it 2 output and add and ADAT(they own Alesis) in and out and let people connect to whatever converter they want. Inmusic just ruins everything they touch, they just bought Moog Music, give it six months. The company should be broken up, sampling is back because people realize in that technology the paint brush is your imagination. Love the Akai workflow amazing, but God they need help. InMusic owns, Alesis, Rane, Dennon, Stanton, Marantz etc, so they have the tool box. #converters

I don't have experience with the old or new SP12 devices. Do the new ones (Rossum, Isal) sound exactly like the old ones? Also, I noticed the Rossum costs 1.5x more than any of the current MPCs, barre the X SE, and even then, it costs $1400 more than that. As for the chip matter, is it possible he's sourcing the chips from old SP1200s that are no longer functioning? Or does he have an arrangement with a manufacturer to make chips to this particular spec? How big is the batch order? Is this what is driving the cost up so high? Is this meant to be a niche release? What about the 35th anniversary edition they sell at $7,000? Do those use the same set of chips? I have tons of questions around this... I remember writing on another video from another channel on the same topic, saying that the sound of the older samplers are specialized sounds at this point, which users would have to pay top dollar to get. As it is in the world of sales nowadays, vintage means bigger price tag. I see the price of the MPC3000 on Reverb, and it often exceeds the price of the MPC X, for devices that are over 20 years old and no longer being made! There are no manufacturers making replacement parts for these anymore, and so you'd have to cannibalize another 3000 to make sure yours remains in order over the years. Akai, like any other company, has to consider the bottom line, and there comes a point in a company's size, where they consider options that will keep them in business, and at the same or greater rate of business. They have to cater to users of all kinds, across continents, performing different genres. Of course they'd go for cleaner and more commonplace converters. This doesn't mean they're cheap. But because they order in bulk to manufacture in bulk, they go with what is cost-effective while maintaining a certain level of quality, and that translates to affordability for all the beatmakers you see today, and those still to come. On the other hand, Rossum will likely not be able to continue selling these SP1200's at the current cost for very long, especially if they start getting traded on eBay or Reverb and the like.
