One minute and forty seconds, to explore an entire sub-genre of British youth culture?! And that included a comedy sketch too!

Skinheads evolved from mods around 1967.I was a mod at that time in London. We wore sta-prest Levis,wish I could still get them.Brown suede hush puppies with red laces!Madras jackets.Tab collared edwardian shirts with 2-21/2 inch collars.The Ben Sherman shirts were cut different back then,high collared and slim waisted fit,the ones you get now are a totally different cut. Trousers were always cut at the ankle to reveal red or white socks.

I dug thru thrift stores for levis sta-prest, fred perry polos, and soul 45s. Glad for the experience. In the US we wore wingtips not boots. We were Suede for sure. Vespas were cheap in the late 90s.

Hi, I know this song as "broadway jungle" from 1964. It was sung by The Maytels as The Flames. It appears on a compilation called Club ska '67 on Island records. And fab it is too!!!

Untrue skinheads were first called " hard mods " Gangly mods that wore traditional working class atire long side mod cloths , they being working class living round the areas with many blacks developed a taste for ska and reggae , musics that were new to trad mods . They became more involed with that along side evolved R&B AKA soul music . If you are a skin upunover look at the way you dress , -the green jacket-simply a cropped parka , fred perry-trad mod shirt .

Funny how in the early days, skinheads hair wasnt all that short eh? I also remember going to Skeg in the early 70's and seeing a Skinhead gang dressed in German para boots, white painters bib and brace overalls, blue Ben Sherman check shits and Bowler hats and brollies, following the "Clockwork Orange" style, and to prove that there really was no racisim then, several of the gang were of a West Indian background. I think these lads were from Notts, but may be wrong.

Skinheads are also typically "working class" or "blue collar" workers. Suede heads were generally more "white collar" workers that were into the multiculturealism but couldn't crop their hair AS short as the skins.

Yes, could be!! In 73 74 I had a suede cut myself. I also had an dark-blue Abercrombie Levi-Sta-press drainpipes with 1-inch turn ups. All of this came from me mams catalogue and I had to pay her 50p a week for each item till it was paid off. The last thing I got was my footware and the move then, was definately toward Air Wair shoes, not boots with either red or white socks. Think i would have been 14, nearly 15 then, and thought i was quite the dandy!!!

I remember a popular place to buy these type of clothes in 1970 was Casanova of The Walworth Road in South London. Oh how I wanted a green 2 tone tonic jacket, but they were a fiver and my Mum said no!!!

Boot boys was a general term for skins though in the early days some guys just wore the boots and didn't go for the close crop and called themselves boot boys. In fact, I reckon suedeheads came about partly 'cos pple were getting sacked (or chucked out of school!) for going the whole hog with the no.2 all over and it was less hassle to have slightly longer hair.

skinheads/suedeheads were just Mods that hadnt sold out to the hippy ethic an kept it sharp and clean (under difficult circumstances). Skins -as a movement- wasnt/isnt racist, they took their looks from black rudeboys, they danced in the same clubs, loved the same music, faced the same hardships as workin class ppl ALL over the UK @ that time. later so called skinbands (swervedriver etc) startd with all that race thing. sad really. Liverpool Mods!!

stOOpid68: I gave a thumb-up to your cool anti-racist message! However, the nazi band you're thinking of is Skrewdriver, not Swervedriver. Swervedriver are a '90s indie-shoegaze band... They're in fact touring right now! ;)
@RugbyDemon678917 жыл бұрын
Much smater cleaner look .... You can really tell can you that skinhead grew out of mod along with rudeboy influences. That one line sounded very 1964 est , If you see some even earlier clips the skins look more similiar to mods than ummmmmm lets say 1970 skinhead . Check out the skinhead moonstomp clip on youtube and youll know wot i mean .

Too many ignorant people who have no idea of recent history. Skinheads of late 60's and early 70's had nothing to do with current racist wankers who stole the skinhead label. It was all about fashion and music - reggae and ska with a bit of motown. It was the first time labels really became a fashion item (Ben Sherman, Brut, Harrington, Crombie, Stay Pressed etc.)

@stevekk36914 жыл бұрын
There was no racism with the originals we had a black guy in every crew. It was more likely to be willesden v North end rd mob or Kilburn etc the rivalry was borough to Borough those days. The racism was inherent in society then though and some guys still tried to bully.
