[animal resources, products I use and more: goherping.com] - When sending off reptiles, I can never be 100% certain how they'll be cared for it despite doing my best. Today I talk about one of the few cases where animals end up getting mailed back to me for various reasons. This ball python went off to a home that seemed prepared and excited, but sadly they started having issues early on, where faulty supplies was their reason to blame. Once the snake came back, I was able to see the full extent of the respiratory infections, stuck shed and large burn on its belly.

Speaking as a vet, I might be able to shed a little light on the bloodwork recommendation. Bloodwork can be a great general screening tool. Because we can't ask animals how they are feeling, we rely on specific cues in their behaviour to make guesses, and sometimes those are bad guesses. Sometimes owners also fail to notice a lot of signs of disease, so vets are looking for more objective data to base their decisions. Boodwork can be another clue into how the animal is doing in general and in an ideal world we would trend it periodically through life, even if the animal looks normal. Additionally, think about this example: a vet sees a snake for a suspected respiratory infection. The vet doesn't mention bloodwork and treats it as usual with some antibiotics and husbandry recommendations. The snake them declines to the point of death and the owners have a post mortem examination performed, which shows the snake also had lungworm, kidney disease, heart disease or something else going on. The owner then says "why didn't we know it had x disease, why didn't you recommend or mention bloodwork (or some other diagnostic test that would have given a clue about x disease)? My snake might have lived if we knew about this!" The vet would be at fault if a client made a complaint and could face hefty fines.
@Moonastronaut
@Moonastronaut 3 жыл бұрын
The impartant thing imo is havrng the owners be informed and they can make their own decisions. Ie all symptoms point to this common thing and it is likely this but blood work would elimnate other potential issues, it's your choice. Also if a parent took a baby to see the dr, will they ask for bloodwork each time?
@appalachiabrauchfrau
@appalachiabrauchfrau 2 жыл бұрын
and that's why vets need to pick up the informed consent model more often. Give the option every time, with reasons and context as to why you may need to charge the owner for such and such panel or test. I get the risks that your preemptive testing is trying to juke, but something needs to change so you don't have to sneak bloodwork into the visit (or onto the bill from the owner's perspective, often times) for fear of fines, litigation or a blemish on your career -- or all three. Routine exams for exotics becoming normalized is the answer, I think, but animal healthcare is expensive. People are already scared of emptying their wallets over their own health, a pet is just another medical accident waiting to break the bank. Exotic pet insurance needs to be talked about more, as far as I know there's only three reputable plans, maybe less, that also needs to be fixed...

And, at least as far as I know, infections in humans often show in their blood as indicators for inflation. I once had blood work done in order to be allowed in rowing tournaments. The first blood work had a tiny amount of indicators hinting at an inflation. According to the doctor it was so little that it was probably leftover from a common cold and the irritated airways going along with that since there were no other indicators for some serious illness and I didn't have any noticeable issues since at least a week prior and even before that I probably only had a little bit of a runny nose. So... At least in humans even small and otherwise almost unnoticeable conditions can show up in blood work as certain indicators. Those indicators are (sometimes only) a hint on the direction in which followup examinations should go.

The vet can also be wrong or not der. I had blood work done on my dog after she had an unknown seizure attack...a cluster. The blood work showed nothing. We were advised to go nothing. Then the worst thing happy. My poor 3 yr old puppy had a series of cluster seizures. Almost 6 clusters in a row. By the time we put her meds, she wasn't the same. She was medicated but, after a torturous month. She would not rest, would not eat, drink, or sleep. She wandered most of the day and night, she constantly moaned. We were devastated that the vet couldn't do more sooner and refused to let us guide her on the final journey...but instead let us all be tortured watching her in pain and not being able to do anything. I didn't sue the vet. They made a mistake. Blood work didn't help, maybe sometimes it can....but I cannot agree with your argument.
@Dinjur
@Dinjur Жыл бұрын
Sure, but the prices are outrageous. You're profiting off people's fear that their pets MAY have an underlying issue. It's not necessary in most cases. There are few diseases that can be confirmed with bloodwork, and they're almost always fatal diseases anyway. The only time I can see blood work genuinely helping is if it's a wild caught snake who is being added to a breeding line. Making it healthy and diagnosing issues is necessary. Otherwise, it's mostly useless.

I just got my ball python a couple weeks ago, and honestly I understand how he feels. At first I was kinda scared of him, since it was my first snake, and he was pretty defensive because I wasn't feeding him right, and I hadn't gotten the humidity right. Now that's all good and dandy, and he's perfectly fine, but for someone who'd never had a snake before, you really have to work yourself up to picking up a defensive snake, and he probably couldn't do that! Also... I was spraying my boys enclosure and he bit me, so I do understand the fear on that part too. Poor lad.

Aww, poor baby. 🥺 It sounds like the owner was in over their head and had some really bad luck, rather than this being the result of malice. I’m glad you’re examining Emerald Scales’ procedures to see what you could do to prevent another animal from falling through the cracks. It’s really great the amount of support you give to your adopters after the fact, and clear that you really care about the animals going to a good home where they thrive. I hope that if/when the previous owner sees this video they do come to the comments section and see how understanding everyone is being. Mistakes happen and animals (or people) get hurt sometimes. But the important thing is learning so that going forward we do better. If the owner ever has another reptile I’d be surprised if they weren’t the most paranoid keeper in the world.

As a vet student we are being taught that most exotic/reptile cases brought to the clinic will be husbandry caused. If you advise them on proper care and handling and the problem remains then start doing diagnostics. I hate that vets get the reputation that we just want your money. No we just want to help your pets. The expensive stuff is usually the quickest and most accurate way to identify the problem.

Wow, I feel so blessed to find the vet I have. My brooks king has been having impaction problems, twice now, where no amount of soaking, exercise or changes to substrate made any effect and medication was needed. Thankfully with both incidents (years apart) the medication worked, and got her system moving. But my vet never pushed me to do bloodwork, and left the X-rays completely up to me, which in hindsight I'm very thankful for.

It's nice to see the comments are understanding. Sounds like the person had a lot of issues happen at once and likely wasn't aware of them until it was too late. Good on them for eventually noticing it and doing the right thing. Hopefully they learn from this and do not let it discourage them.

That poor baby! Some people just don't understand how to properly care for them and don't fully know what they're getting themselves into when getting a snake for the first time and don't care for them well enough. I know I spoil all 8 of my snek babies rotten, and don't expect everyone to care for theirs the same way I do, but they should at least provide the standard requirements for their babies when they decide to care for one. That poor sweet baby! I hate to see snakes have to go through getting burned and end up with RIs. That's so sad! I'm so glad that there are people like you that know what to do in cases like this and can care for the injuries and help guide people in what to do or not do in situations like this. That's where you never know with people where they seem excited and we'll informed on how to care for one and seem prepared, but when it's their first one, they don't understand what to do/not do to care for them. I would love to take little Paperclip if you haven't found a home for him!

There shouldn't be any red flags because I think the person genuinely just didn't know how to properly care and as you said was afraid of the snake. Poor baby needs lots of R&R now. These kind of videos are awesome. I like them. Its always interesting to see the good and the bad side of reptile ownership and selling/breeding. I've always wondered this side of it for any breeder really, so this is a really enjoyable series that I'd love to watch more of.

Man you might want to bump up your humidity for your ball pythons that pastel Butter has stuck shed! Give it a soak, and maybe mist the cage a few times more, if you are using a tank that might be the issue! Try covering more of the top so that less humidity escapes!

I prefer to use a humidity box for my ball python and spray the tank thoroughly whenever he's shedding and make sure the humidity box stay is humid all year round because I live in a humid State as it is so it's constantly around 40 to 50% humidity here and in his humidity box it's around 70 to 80 maybe 90 percent humidity so he has that option to move in and out of it as he pleases because I know in the wild they get humidity from going in termite mounds but Africa is not always constantly humid everywhere so I don't like to keep the entirety of the cage humid all the time it's just what I found works for me and he is a very happy and healthy ball python. I also have a large water dish big enough for him to soak in so one end of the tank has his humidity box while the other end has a sterilite tub that I believe is 6 quarts maybe a little bigger but I know it is big enough for him to sit in even though he has to be balled up a little bit to sit in it and I feel it about halfway so he can soak as he wishes and it helps raise the humidity and his tank because he has a PVC enclosure so it helps with humidity as well. I just have found that this works for me because I don't want to keep it to humid as it's already humid where I live

Poor guy. Sometimes people have a hard time. Owning snakes or reptiles isn't for everyone, I have learned over many years fear is the biggest issue with these animals, it causes neglect by accident. Even a snake that acts aggressive gets handled, in fact more often to socialize it and look for concerns to make sure they are okay. I feel bad both for the animal and person, they probably feel horrible.

When I got my snake, I took him from a neglected person and he had a giant burn (12 inches across his belly too, treated with a diluted betadine bath and neosporin and it scarred over well) and stuck shed from low humidity, it was around 10%. He had undertank heating but the thermostat controlling it was broken, neglected overall tho :/ wasn't fed in 4 months and never handled. Lied on how he got the burn too! Said it was from a power outage during a flood,,, which doesn't explain it or even make sense ? How do you get a burn from the heating being turned off ??
