Mercedes shop manual for older cars says use compressed air to blow any dirt away from the top of the spark plugs before removal, in order to keep it out of the engine and plug threads. Begin threading the new plugs by hand to avoid cross-threading the plug. For convenience, I would replace the spark plugs before re-installing the coil packs and new wires. Probably also a good time to check for leaks in the valve cover gaskets and replace them if necessary.

How do you install beru wires that have more rubber instead of metal?
@passport619 Жыл бұрын
Got a 2006 Merc S430 with a misfire on cylinder 3 at right around 4k rpms. I changed plugs, wires, maf, air filter, fuel filter, coil packs and checked injectors for a clean spray pattern and im still misfiring 😖 Any recommendations appreciated.. Compression check? I switched coils and plugs around to make sure i didn't have a defective part as well. Just always cylinder 3 ☠
@GarageDynamics Жыл бұрын
Hello L.S., that's a bummer to hear about your situation. Misfires can be very tricky to find. I would do a compression check just to make sure you don't have worn out rings. Also double check that you're using the correct spark plug model number for your engine and that it has the proper gap. Next, check your rubber hoses around throttle body, EGR, and any hose connecting to the engine to make sure you do not have any vacuum leaks. I hope this helps. Cheers!

Question - If you buy wires that don't have letters on em, you can always write it on em with a marker before installing, ensuring the correct length, long or short, from your old wires. Will that not work? Great video!
@GarageDynamics4 жыл бұрын
Hello Tuyt01! Thanks! It's possible the marker would work. I'm not sure how the ink will handle the high temperature from the engine. It might be better to mark the rubber boot that connects to the ignition coil pack. If possible, I would recommend purchasing a spark plug wire set with the letters already marked by the manufacture. I hope this helps. Cheers!

@GarageDynamics3 жыл бұрын
Hello Source 1 News Untold Stories, I swapped out the dipstick because it's easy to break the handle while removing the air intake duct. The red cap is just a cover to prevent dirt from getting into the oil dipstick tube. When I check the oil level I use the OEM dipstick which I keep in my toolbox

Hello Vaughn Stapleton, Yes, the letters matter because you will need them to reference the wires to the correct plug in the cylinder which has to match up with the correct coil pack. I hope this helps. Cheers!

@GarageDynamics5 жыл бұрын
Hello Jcheng810! You're very welcome! I hope all went well over the weekend. I do not apply die-electric grease. If you decide to apply the grease only use a small amount. Whether you use it or not, it won't affect performance.

I have 2001 s430, CYL 1 misfire pending code. Should I just try to replace just the plugs? or is it more likely plug wires, or the coil itself causing it?
@mohadhady98624 жыл бұрын
I don't understand why the Mercedes Benz made this simple process as gruesome and difficult which is very easy and simple if they mark each coil in numerical order which go to either "A" or "B" spark plug. I have 2004 Mercedes Benz C240 and just plug the shortage cable to the top spark plug housing and the long one to the bottom housing and so far I have no miss fire and no problem at all.

if you want to restore performance ie. get some improvement... make sure the PCV system is not broken and leaking idle air because LEAN MISFIRES screw up the FUEL TRIMS! Take a look at that with ODB2 Scanner pointed at the ECM live data, engine running. 👍

Nice video. I do have a couple of questions and a couple of observations though. First of all, I am going to need to change my valve cover gaskets and spark plugs on my 2004 E500. It has leaked oil all over the coil pack and wires. What do you recommend to use to clean all of this oil off? Maybe brake clean? Second, your link to the Snap On spark plug socket did not work for me. Do you have a link for a good but less expensive spark plug socket on Amazon? Thank you. Tom
@GarageDynamics2 жыл бұрын
Hello Tom, Thank you for the kind words. As for cleaning the valve cover mating surface. I would recommend denatured alcohol or mild degreaser. Brake cleaner may get in unwanted areas and cause harm to sensitive parts. My apologies for the link. I will update the link. Also, here are some links for future reference: 5/8" Swivel Magnetic Spark Plug Socket, 3/8" Drive: amzn.to/3UwlF2I Mercedes Spark Plug Wrench Boot Puller 17mm: amzn.to/3zYJQPb Walker Ultra Spark Plug Wire Set: amzn.to/3UEUyT6 Bosch Platinum Spark Plug: amzn.to/34qJ4b2 These links are also in the description. Reading your description information about spark plug gap (0.010 +/- give or take depending on you driving habits). I recently received Bosch iridium plugs and the pre-gap on them are 0.044 = 1,1mm. Do you think they will work fine on my 04 Mercedes s430 base model? (I’m a “normal” driver type, not a “full throttle” kinda guy:)
@GarageDynamics3 жыл бұрын
Hello MaddHouse Audio and Visuals! My plugs came out of the box with a .04 gap. In the Mercedes manual it recommends 0.031 inches or 0.8mm gap. I'm a normal driver too, however I still gapped mine to 0.031 inches. This was right before I went on a 2,500 mile road trip with the car so I wanted maximum MPG and it delivered. I think my record was 39mpg. I would suggest gapping your plugs to Mercedes Spec for peace of mind. I hope this helps. Cheers!

Every Mercedes owner should have their spark plugs gapped. I have a workshop manual good to 2010 and it plainly says, "All Mercedes gas engines get an 0.8mm gap, fool." Now, all well and good, but what about the plugs that Mercedes takes off the shelf and stuffs in an engine? Are they gonna gap each plug during assembly? Oh, hell no. Those off the shelf plugs are factory gapped to 0.040 to 0.044 inches which is a bit over 0.8mm.
