About rabies, it's just that it's still very common in wildlife and strays animals in less developed areas of the globe. Even I ran the severe risk of getting rabies when I got bit by a strayish dog on my university campus here in my country, in a completely urban area, in one of the global megalopolises. The dog was believed to be sort of cared by some security guards on the dorms area, and it always was sort of aggressive to students but it got worse with time, and it nipped me on my fingertip as I passed by the building it slept at, and I had to rush to the hospital and start taking the prophylaxis shots. Not even two weeks after the biting incident the peeps at the university group announced that dog suddenly started convulsing and foaming at the mouth and died a weird death where it went rigid, and I knew atm that I had made the right decision to rush to the hospital instead of brushing it off.

rabies can also be transmitted when the bodies of an infected animal are eaten. Opossums are GOATs though, because if they consume an infected animal, their internal body temperatures are almost always too low for the virus to take hold. that on top of eating a massive amount of ticks which statistically decreases rates of lyme disease in an area, opossums are one of natures janitors.
@davidwilliams377 Жыл бұрын
The tick thing is a myth likely and a claim made on a terrible “study” based on assumptions by bad scientists. No evidence they consume ticks especially on such a major level.

i think one reason ppl contract rabies ( aside from encountering animals in the hyper-aggressive mode) is bc in movies/cartoon you always see the animals foaming at the mouth, never the "drunk/delirious" state, so i think many ppl just see a injured or sick animal and try to help it, without suspecting rabies bc no foaming.

@Vincisomething Жыл бұрын
@@potitishogun2961997 no, they are not. It's a common misconceptions for some reason to think they are though. Cetaceans include dolphins and whales, but they are further divided. Cetacean is the order, but dolphins belong to the family odontocetes and whales belong to the family mystecetes. Both families are under the order cetacean as separate groups. Orcas belong to odontocetes, which means "teethed whale". But don't let that trip you up. Odontocetes refers to dolphins. Mysticetes are whales, the ones with baleen. Saying orcas are whales because both are cetaceans is like sort of like saying dogs and cats are the same because they both belong to the order Carnivora. When they actually belong to different families under the carnivora order. I'm a biology major and I've taken marine biology where we were taught this exact thing. Cetacean just refers to all mammals in the ocean. Dolphins and whales are mammals but don't belong in the same family. Orcas belong in the dolphin family. They're not called killer whales because they're whales, they were known to kill whales. It's like saying dogs and cats are the same for being carnivores. Did you know dolphins and porpoises are not the same, either? They belong to a separated family called phocoenidae. All three are cetaceans, but that's sort of like saying dogs, cats, and bears are carnivores.
@Vincisomething Жыл бұрын
@@potitishogun2961997 it gives the same energy as people that think any bug they see is an insect, so they end up naming a spider an insect. Which also includes families phocoenidae and mysticetes

Rabies is exactly why, if ever bitten by an animal, you immediately go to the hospital to get treated. Because it's better to be safe and have a false alarm than be buried six feet under because you assumed the animal isn't infected.

I was researching about rabies after a my neighbor dog bit me over a year ago, (didn't make direct skin contact and the bite was dry)I didn't even know what rabies was until months later when I was researching dog bite symptoms because I didn't go to the hospital and just brushed it off because it wasnt bad. Here's what I learned: 1) If an animal bites you pet or wildlife call the police and go to hospital even if it is small, make sure to get as much information as possible about the animal 2) Rabies can't travel through Clothes (unless the saliva gets through Clothes)and is killed by soap/ alcoholic, etc 3)It's is preventable as long symptoms haven't started, so usually within 3-6 months but it can be a years later, if you think it's rabies get the shots 4) During the incubation period rabies can't get transmitted to you if an animal bites you because the virus hasn't hit the brain yet so it's not in the saliva yet 5)The shots are extremely expensive, even with insurance, so if it's someone's pet SUE them! Needless to say I got very lucky and my mom got very mad at me when she found out, I'm also paranoid so that didn't help either and now I every once in awhile I worry I might have it although I don't because if I did I would be dead because I didn't get any shots and other health officials have told I would be dead by now. It was a scary learning experience but I'm great full to be alive and well.

Only 1 person has ever survived after symptoms appeared and she was in a coma for a while, while they supported her bodies needs and required extensive rehab just to walk and talk.

Crazy thing about prions is that the protein naturally exists in your body. When the protein folds correctly, it's no issue. It performs the function it's supposed to. It also denatures (unfolds / "dies") much more easily to heat when folded in the correct shape. The disease, seen in humans as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, only comes about when the protein folds itself incorrectly. For some reason, this also causes the prions of neighboring cells to re-fold themselves into this incorrect shape, which is how the disease spreads. Something about this wrong shape also makes it extremely heat resistant, which is why it takes such extreme heat to get it to finally denature. Now, it's been more than a decade since my college microbiology class where we studied this, so they may have changed some of the terminology since then. This is what I remember from that class, though.

What makes rabies so dangerous is that it is one that have lot of uncertainty factors coming with it. The average is that it can take 20-90 days before symptoms appear, but there has been cases where symptoms have appeared as soon as 4 days or several years after an infection. And once the symptoms have set in, it's either to lease a casket or try the Milwaukee Protocol(a medically induced coma, with 14% survival rate). it depends where you get it and where get bitten. Anything near your spine or brain, like neck is to be treaded as possibble scenario. And if you were bitten by a bat, then that should be treated as imminent danger. Bats have such robust immune system that they can withstand lots of punishment from diseases without losing their lives. Which is a bad news for humans, as whatever is unpleasant for bats could be certainly deadly for humans. This doesn't just stop with rabies and bats can survive as dreadfull diseases as Ebola and even dreaded Marburg-virus.
