This video was G O L D E N. Not that anyone cares, but I just had a baby, it’s cold asf out, and we almost broke down 3 times in the cold ever since the serpentine belt started slippin’. This video saved us money and ultimately from my newborn freezin’ in the car. BEFORE YOU THINK ITS YOUR BATTERY, CHECC YOUR SERPENTINE BELT! Also, QUICC TIP: When you go to tighten your belt, twist the belt with 2 fingers to determine wether it’s too loose, too tight or just right. For ex: if you can’t twist it at all, TOO TIGHT! If you can twist it from flat to standing straight up (90*), PERFECT! If you twist and it goes past 90*, TOO LOOSE! Hope this helps outside of your understanding of the video!

I've replaced the alternator myself on this engine a few times thanks to some how to videos on KZbin. Unfortunately about a 100k miles ago, I paid a shop $700 to replace the timing belt and water pump because I had always heard it required to a lot of labor. A lot of shops recommemd the water pump be replaced at the same time so that was done too. Thanks to your video popping in the recommended list, I will replace the belt myself since I already know how to drop the alternator and hope the old water pump doesn't leak anytime soon.
@expectedd35223 ай бұрын
This is NOT the timing belt. The timing belt is an internal component that keeps both sides of the motor "in time" with each other. The timing belt does require a lot of labor, this one (the accessory/serpentine belt) does not. If you're due for a timing belt/water pump replacement you should get that done by a professional. Timing jobs are sensitive and you have the potential to break a lot of things if you do something wrong

I'm 24 now, my father didn't have the patience to teach me anything. So since I've moved out I've slowly marked another thing off the list of maintenance. Recently I replaced the breaks in my ladies car including the front calipers. I was always nervous about those seeing as they are important. But turns out they are extremely easy, I did learn you have to bleed them😂luckily I didnt make it out of the driveway before realizing it hahah. I have an 82 s10 as a backup as well, things runs amazing and is easy to work on.

Agreed that too many home made vids do not explain fully what / how to do. ONE tool / trick that I would like to share: whether or not it is needed, always spray the bolts that are involved, with some type of spray loosening lubricant/ cleaning agent such as WD40, Liquid Wrench, or even motor or Wesson oil if nothing on hand etc., before starting the job. Wait at least 10 mins for it to penetrate thread spaces, then go for it. You'll be surprised how much less effort it takes to break the rust thread seal on the bolt, and how easier it may be to turn the bolt out using socket wrenches first when possible. If spaces are tight, then at least use the closed 'box' end of the wrench to break the bolt loose as to not strip the bolt head. Fundamentals. Thanks Dad! Is it possible to do this without loosening the adjustment bolt? It's practically impossible to reach and would NOT come loose no matter how hard I tried. Maybe a specific tool, like a long bar, could help?
@SKITZOpHISH3 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately not, you will have too loosen the bolt. Good news is there's always a tool for the job. Your local auto parts store should have a tool that will reach and give you the leverage you need to get it loose. just let them know and they should be able to help you pick the right tool.
@Kordziel3 ай бұрын
The only tools you need are a12mm socket, two extensions each about ten inches, and a 14mm socket for the bolt you can see that holds the alternator to the engine. Push the alternator down after loosening both bolts towards the front of the car.

Ok I got a question if the compressor is stuck can I completely miss the air conditioning with the belt and if so will it run good
@SKITZOpHISH3 жыл бұрын
When you say stuck are you talking about the wheel the belt wraps around for the compressor isn't spinning? Is the question asking about bypassing that wheel? I'm not sure that the car would run good as the belts are specific sizes and hold a specific tension. But I haven't really looked into. My advice is just to replace the compressor if need be, plenty of videos around on that as well. Good luck hope it all works out.

@notgiven31148 ай бұрын
It's great that you did this video. But I'd like to mention a couple of things. You used confusing terms for the bolts. First of all, in the case of the first bolt that you loosened, I recommend that you not say anything about "hydraulically locked" nor imply that there's anything different about how to loosen it compared to any other bolt. There's nothing special about it. Another thing, it doesn't require as many turns as you say. One turn (maybe two) should be enough to loosen it. As for the other bolts, the one on the left is there to "lock" the position of the alternator after you've installed and tightened the belt. I'd call that one a "position locking bolt" or something like that. Calling it "the adjustment bolt" is misleading. It's the other one that adjusts the position of the alternator in order to loosen and/or tighten the belt. As in the case of the first bolt that you loosened, the "position locking bolt" should be loosened only a turn or two. If you loosen these bolts more than a couple of turns, you run the risk of having them come completely out and falling into the engine compartment or under the car.

@doginu3 ай бұрын
There's a wheel here and a wheel there. to take it off there's this right here and then there's that one, you put your connection to it? WTF are you talking about? There's no hydraulic bolt. Break loose the 1st 12mm bolt , there another below the 12mm bolt on the adjustment bracket. break that loose . Then loose the bolt facing up until you can remove the belt. Educate yourself Pulley, Wrench, Ratchet.....
