Thanks for the technical info about BMS. I agree that there are many Enyaq owners who do not think that preheating is a problem. If you live in a mild climate or park in a heated garage, this is not a daily problem in winter. For me, into the 2nd winter with 80x, living in a cold climate, 6-7 month winter with large parts -10 to -15, also down to -25-30. Uses a lot of time charging, as it has a shorter range and takes longer to charge at home (car is parked outside). Starts with battery 0 degrees? but after an hour of driving in -10 -20 or driven and parked for a few hours, I assume the battery gets a little cold? On my 2014 BMW i3, it preheated to +10 degrees and I could see the battery temp while driving. Also found out that by "running the battery warm", to about +16 degrees, I got fast charging. Waited 16 months for the Enyaq and expected the promised preheating BMS to be better than a 2014 I3 with OTA upgrades for new or improved functions. The Enyaq is my private car and paid for out of my own pocket, as a software developer for 25 years and slightly above average interested in cars, so I hope we can soon get an answer to what is planned next in general with ME3.x

Hello Matthias, another great video, thank you very much! So it's actually just the software that's causing the problem. When we ordered our Enyaq in 2021, I was counting on the updates announced by VW & Skoda to come. That's why my opinion is that CARAID/VW/Skoda have to deliver these things as promised and not leave us alone with this beta software.

Yet another well considered video. Thank you for saying what all of us who use DC charging in winter are thinking. Cariad’s decision to reduce battery heating when they moved from ME2.0 was flawed and shows a lack of understanding of what their customers need in cold temperatures. Yes, the range reduction on short journeys under 2.0 when the battery was heating to 10 C was concerning, but explanation why this was needed would have been a better solution rather than what we have now.

You make my day. I'm disappointed by my recently bought October 2023, Enyaq with software ME3.5. Everything you described is in line with my daily feelings, shame ! Now, with a difference of a few months, i have to leave with knowing there is better version ME4 on the road... Keep pushing this unhappiness to the top. You are the best. My wife's car is BMW iX1. They constantly update and improve software that already fare a way from Enyaq in terms of user experience and afidability From Belgium !

Hello, we don't need preheating for fast charging only, but we need preheating also for high power output for driving. I've bought a car with some kW and most of the time car isn't able to provide me it during winter and that annoys me perhaps even more. So according me the easiest way is to use ME2.0 Ready (for driving) setting in Sport mode only in ME3.X cars (perhaps with higher values, for example ON below 18, OFF over 20). So in Normal, Eco, Comfort or Traction mode without any changes (less impact for homologation approvals) but in Sport mode it would be nice to have heating on for some occasions. And a while before fast charging drivers can choose a Sport mode instead of yoyo driving to preheat the battery and after charging it changes to Normal mode automatically. Usefull, no impact for normal driving, well known for manufacturer, easy to apply, without interface changes.

Good video with really painstaking explanations. It's obvious when you look at carscanner while dc charging that we have a ptc battery heater so why they still not let us trigger it manually is a mystery. Just so you know, in the UK "fast chargers" are AC chargers up to 22 kW and anything more is a "rapid" or "ultra rapid" (ie 150 kW plus) charger. Keep up the good work! 👍💪

@@Speicherelektrisiert no problem, the names made sense 5 years ago but now it's getting confusing. Some people are trying to use the names 'journey charger' and 'destination charger' for DC and AC chargers.

VAG basically only has to do one thing after doing some calculations. It’s basically pre-heating the battery to around 15 degrees Celsius before you drive off. (Pre-heat in the Skoda app) They only have to add an selection of what you want to heat, battery and interior, interior only, or battery only. Even better: add a temperature slider for the battery. This way you can choose if you don’t want heating (because of short distance for example) I want to avoid lithium plating as much as possible, and as much range as possible. And that is easier with lower internal resistance (which goes hand in hand with temperature.) On a long highway journey battery will get to 30 degrees, but for semi-long trips of around 50 km, it is better to have the battery already at 15 degrees C.

In the charts it shows in the column «AC Charing» that SW v.4.0 heats up the battery to 10˚C. Isn’t this a waste of energy or is the battery chemistry different and needs to be warmer to charge at AC power? I fully agree with you. It’s just up to VW / Škoda to decide if they care about existing customers or not. Don’t think I will by another VW brand car again. I have v.3.0 in my Enyaq since June 2022 when I bought the car. Also disappointed that they haven’t even provided v3.1, v3.2, v3.5 or 3.6 in the 18 months of ownership.

Once again really nice explanation :) it makes it clear that if the VAG group wanted this we would get it. Sadly it more appers they dont care about their costumors which will be bad for the next gen of buyers as many Enyaq and ID owners for this reasson would rather buy a chineese car as it seems like they deliver whats promised. theryre even cheaper and by so you might be ok be a lees as comfy car as Enyaq as long as you know they will update it so it does not loose alot of value

Hi Matthias, again a video straight to the point. Luckily I am using ABRP for long (holiday) trips, which gives nowadays battery temperature in the app when you use OBD-dongle. May be someone could develop an BMS-companion app which can be used to see optimal charging calculation in a better way than VAG does (by algorithm taking into account the condition of the battery. Actually what ABRP does for range calculations but now we should have this for DC-charging. I think ABRP is party which could deliver this as charging is a major part of your EV trip and affecting ETA significantly in addition to navigation and traffic. Other topic slightly touched by you but similar discussion as preheating is bi-directional charging 😀

@Matthias, do you understand the "departure timer" function at depth? I believe to see the same behavior as you describe with departure timer by simply starting the "Climate control" in the app without setting a concrete departure time. I believe to observe a battery heating of the car (ambience) AND the battery (via OBD2) when below 0 degC. This appears to be the case regardless of AC charging or OFF grid. For me this is like if the "Start" button in the Climate Control Section of the App is an instant battery pre-heating for driving - even though I haven't heard this mentioned somewhere. Wished we had a similar button for pre-heating for charging. This is on a 80X FE 2022 - observations at -10 to -20 degC outside temp.

Hi. Thank you very much for this video. I got Enyaq 2 months ago and if you use your car for work-related driving and you need to charge your car fast during the drive to a customer then preheating is a must. And afterall, you decide if you want to use preheating or would you like to use that energy for longer range. So, it should be there anyhow if the HW supports this. I really don't get why it is still not implemented... Also, what does it say about VW and Skoda if they promise something and then they don't deliver? And also, the infotainment Skoda has is years behind what it could be done these days... It is not that hard to add some additional info to the HMI and also being able to limit the charging by selecting the current and not only having 100% or 50% possibilities for 11kW charging... c'mon...

As someone who has worked with control systems for more than 15 years, to fix this takes a programmer half a day, so yes, this seems like a lack of interest to fix. I agree that you don't need it all the time, and yes there is a trade off in range, but a warmer battery will probably get you further than a cold one, so some heating is actually beneficial, but at som point you tip over and its a loss. The driving style you refer to is often called "yoyo driving", those spinning play things that spin up and down. I tried it on my RS and within 20km I got the temperature from 0,5C to 9C. But 9C did not help much on charging speed, I got 68kW which increased to 83kW at 16C/26%SOC. Looking at my RS battery after 13.000km, I can only charge it to 69kWh, so there seems to be some degradation as well, I seem to have lost around 3kW since the car was new. I had a look at the BMW i5 and MB EQE SUV yesterday, I think I will replace the RS in the next 6-8 months.

Thanx for the video, if you have and can share some details about temperature details would appreciate a lot. I guess my Coupe 80X has a similar battery your car has. I bought an OBD2 unit (15€) to control the battery temp. On a daily basis, I'm parking a car in a garage which usually is not lower than 7°C, but during the city commute (~15km @20km/h) I have never seen a battery temp higher than 11°C and for charging on the public AC I don't care much. Another thing is a long trip. For my first long trip which will be in total ~ 3000 km (writing this in the middle of it) only once I got amazing charging speed : it was the second DC charging from 3% SOC and my charging power immediately reached 155kW. On the second day I tried so called Jo-Jo and increased temp from 13 to 22°C, but I managed to get only 65kW having 40% SOC, maybe due to increased difference between min and max battery temp (I saw ~3°C), maybe for this SOC it was good enough as 65kW lasted almost till 80%.
@RicoD5
@RicoD5 Жыл бұрын
In cold weather, when I start a high power charging session with an SOC above 20%, the maximum charging power doesn’t exceed 65kW also. When temperature is higher (SOC higher than 20%) about 95kW is the max. Oh, and I drive an Enyaq 60 with ME 3.0

Thank you! Interesting information, how is this collected? Curiously, ME3.x row indicates that the battery "target" temperature at departure was chosen to be 0 ... 2 degrees when not plugged in, but -5 ... 0 when plugged into AC charger. I wonder what could be the logic there? I would have thought one would want to spend a bit more on heating while plugged in, not less.

Hello, I have an observation that on the small display the blue line where the car displays the recupertion intensity, in cold days the background is shorter. I think the length of the light blue background line depends on the battery temperature as if I travel on country road or highway the background (ligh blue line) lenght is not really changing after ~100km, but in city driving where I accelerate and brake a lot the lenght of the ligth blue background line growing and after about 1 hour city driving it reach the original size. Could you check in your car that what is the correlation of the line to the battery temp? I do not have OBD device and have not found any info about it on the internet. I think it woudl worth a short video.

Your observation is partly true but the bars do not indicate temperature directly but power in kilowatts available. The bars indicate the amount of possible accelaration and regeneration in kilowatts. If they are greyed out a bit this means you have a limited amount of power available. This limitation is due to temperature and soc. If you charge your ENYAQ to 100% in summer the blue bar gets limited as well because the battery is nearly full so less regen possible. I did a whole video about this but it was before the relaunch so it is only available in german with english subtitles: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fau1pmibaLqbhtE

Bulls eye Matthias! There is no rational reason for not implementing battery pre-heating. The irrational reasons why we will suffer a third ‘Coldgate’ winter are contempt and greed. VAG indeed doesn’t care about existing customers since the earnings are already in the bank. Investing in a useful software update won’t generate extra revenue for VAG.
