Republic of Macedonia.
@chrismichal82424 жыл бұрын
lone wolf Nop, there is not that republic you said... The politicians named (under the pressure of Americans and Germans) that state (?) as "republic of North (fake)Macedonia".
@mellake70524 жыл бұрын
But the people in Macedonia and anywhere in the world are free to call it by its original name, Republic of Macedonia.
@chrismichal82424 жыл бұрын
Mel Lake The point is that "Macedonia" it isn't their original name! They're slavics (bulgarian and serbs) and some of them (35%) are Albanians. There is not Macedonian language (actually the ancient Macedonians were spoke Greek. In now days the slavic people of Skopje are speaking a Bulgarian dialect) also there was not historically a Macedonian nation (they were one of the Greek tribes). Macedonia is Greece. It is the northern part of Greece. They have not the right to steal our History and names. That's all...
@mellake70524 жыл бұрын
7. There is absolutely no evidence that the ancient Macedonian language was Greek so there is no solid foundation for modern Greek historians to draw such conclusions. There is plenty of evidence though, that the ancient Macedonian language could not be comprehended by the ancient Greeks. Alexander spoke both Greek and Macedonian - whatever that ancient Macedonian was like. Alexander’s Greek soldiers and his Macedonian soldiers could not understand each other and interpreters were required at the courts when both Greeks and Macedonians were in attendance. The evidence on this abounds. 8. The Macedonians of the Republic of Macedonia speak the (internationally recognised) Macedonian language (as do their now-minority-group blood relatives in what is now northern Greece - that ethnic group which was made a minority on their own land). The Bulgars arrived in Macedonia speaking Turkic tongues and incorporated the “Slavic” dialects as they assimilated and gradually dominated the region. The Bulgarian language still retains some Turkic elements but the Macedonian language does not - because it is the original language of the region. So technically, the Bulgarian language is a dialect of Macedonian, not the other way around. However, once languages become standardised, they are considered languages in their own right, not dialects, therefore modern Bulgarian is now a language in its own right. 9. It is interesting how Greece refers to the language spoken by the Macedonian minority in northern Greece (the native Macedonians of the land,- not the 1,000,000 Madjiri who were recently settled in the region and now call themselves “Macedonians”) as the “local” dialect or “dopi”, yet their blood relatives (brothers, sisters, grandparents, etc) who live north of the border and their fellow citizens who speak exactly the same language, apparently speak “Skopian”. 10. There was not historically a Greek nation. Modern Greece is a new nation. All modern nations are new. Some were formed later than the independent Republic of Macedonia. As you say, there were Hellenic tribes (who were multi-ethnic even then) but ancient Macedonians were not considered by the ancient historians nor by neutral historians today as being Greek but simply as having fallen under heavy Greek influence over time. Only Macedonian royalty and nobility were accepted into the Greek fold but the common Macedonian people were not. Even in today’s world, we grant special privileges to the rich/ famous/powerful. Macedonia is one of the few, if not only, names still existing from ancient times. All nations as we know them today were formed in the last two centuries so it is wondrous why some people single out the Republic Macedonia for special attention. Greece is less than 200 years old and the people residing there did not identify as Greek except in a religious sense as even the Albanians (the majority) were called Greeks just for being Christian. Greeks lost their sense of being “Hellenic” during the Roman Empire. The Greek language was revived during the formation of the Greek nation by western powers. The original choice of language was Albanian because it was already widely spoken in the land.
@mellake70524 жыл бұрын
11. Macedonia was brutally divided after the Balkan Wars and Greece received a huge slice of the spoils of war. Macedonia was never part of Greece prior to that time. Your authorities went on a mission to Hellenise all the people living in the part of Macedonia which became Northern Greece when you took control of the “occupied lands”. Fortunately, what remains of Macedonia is now an independent nation (just a little over 100 years later than Greece becoming an independent nation). To quote the words of one of your more honest politicians in a recent speech in Greek parliament, the part that now falls under Greek borders was MADE Greek when Greek authorities systematically changed the ethnic composition of the north by bringing in and settling into Macedonian and Turkish villages, over 1,000,000 Turkish Pontians (who had to be taught to speak Greek), Albanians, Georgians and other Madjiri. I didn’t catch whether he also mentioned that tens of thousands of the native (Slav-speaking) Macedonians of the land were banished from their homes and forced into Bulgaria, Yugoslavia (as it was then) and other European countries, and the many who were murdered. Prior to this atrocity, the region was Macedonian-majority, with a large Turkish and Vlach population, whilst the capital (of what was Macedonia prior to 1913 and not within Greek borders), Salonika, was Jewish-majority. 12. No-one stole your name, nor your history. Macedonia and Greece have shared history, from antiquity through to modern days - just as ALL neighbours have a shared history. The residents of Macedonia have the right to call themselves Macedonian just as the Albanian/SlavicMacedonian/Vlach/Turk population (plus dozens of minorities) of modern Greece have the right to call themselves Greek. These people have no more claim to any ancient connections than anyone else in the Balkans. If you claim that Macedonians have “stolen” history, then logically, the multi-ethnic population of modern Greece which is not Hellenic have “stolen” Hellenic history. Apply the same logic. Many people in Macedonia have come from elsewhere, just as the majority of the people in Greece have come from elsewhere. As neutral historians say, there may be people in Macedonia who are descended from the ancient peoples as much as anyone else in the Balkans. When Greece took control of a part of Macedonian land, they named their portion “Northern Greece”. They were not interested in the name Macedonia. In fact, they actively schemed to rid the land of any such thing. It is only since Macedonia became independent (after the dissolution of Yugoslavia) that Greek authorities began to tremble. Whilst Macedonia was under control of Yugoslavia, Greece was not the slightest bit interested in claiming the name Macedonia. Some politicians have periodically admitted the reason for Greece’s fear but mostly they have concocted the new narrative that Macedonia is Greece because by doing so, they believe they cannot be accused of having anyone else’s land if it is “Greek”. In every document, including the bible, Greece and Macedonia are referred to as two separate entities. It’s all documented - but really, you have nothing to fear from a small nation which has already formally declared they have no irredentist aspirations.) There are over 20 places in the world (the majority in the USA) with the name Macedonia. You have nothing to fear. Relax and learn to be a good neighbour. What a foolish thing to be fretting about and for your country to be spending multi-millions (of the EU’s) money on. Macedonia was known as Macedonia even whilst under Yugoslavia and no harm came to Greece because of this, just like no harm is coming to them now. There was no chanting of 3-word slogans then (“Macedonia is Greece”) - even though it had the name Macedonia. In fact, Greece even acknowledged Macedonia by its name on Greek atlases. Northern Greece is the one which changed names. Funny it took close to 200 years to realise that Macedonia is “Greek”. 13. That’s not all, but that’s enough.

We were supposed to have travelled to North Macedonia 2 years ago as it was on route on our hitchhiking journey from Thailand to Spain. But instead we choose to go straight to the Albanian riviera and skip North Macedonia. This place seem a bit over crowded for our liking but we've heard amazing things about North Macedonia as a country so we'd love to go there at some point. Will you go back and explore more in the future? Really recommend Albania if you haven't been. We only did the coast but the mountains are supposed to be really nice. Thanks for sharing guys! 😘

36 deg. way too hot for me, that's almost body temp, those back packs don't help, the sweat on Alex's back was noticeable, surely a military type belt that has pockets for everything would be better. Haggling with cabbies is always the way to go, used to be one and i always managed to haggle a price that was a few pound above the meter price but run the meter anyway so the passenger should have let me use the meter in the first place, cash or card up front, often saying "it's on the meter" scares them into haggling. If they then complained, "we agreed a price" was the answer and at 3 AM they were not in the mood to argue the toss.
@tonys16365 жыл бұрын
This sounds confusing, agree a price, get the fare to pay upfront by cash or card, if the metered price is above the amount agreed fare gained, if below I gained.
