Rock is such the domain of man, that women of the genre are few in comparison and any review, or comment about that female as a rock star invariably carries some form of the quantifier "for a woman" to remind you that she isn't as good as her male counterparts. Skin, for her part, added a couple of gimmicks to the 'women in rock' playbook, which she promptly ripped to pieces when she broke the biggest taboo of them all; sporting a skinhead, being black, wasn't the taboo: it was this rock band's figurehead, its 'frontman' would not be one, but a woman. A 'front-woman' was heading this band, in a genre that spoke of its men as 'Rock God's' and deified them as such. And they want to be taken seriously! And then Skin sang- she rocked, she had the attitude, she commanded everyone's attention. She wasn't the band's leader because she was the 'pretty, young-girl' but because she rightly belonged there. There would be no apologies, and there was no gimmick. Skin wasn't a great front-woman 'for a woman'. Nor was Skunk Anansie a good rock band 'for one led by a woman'She was, and they were, great simply because they were great. In the pantheon of British rock-God's stands a woman, not because she's a woman, but because she's Skin And surrounding Skin are a lot of rock God's who aren't half bad, considering 'they're not Skin'
