The plane on the ground would have enough thermal signature for it. It is a movie so they had to go for the refuel truck.

@@petergreenson Definitely not, fox 2s are designed to track targets that are super hot, like a jet engine on afterburners. The jet on the ground would not have been nearly hot enough for it to track

@@cykalandon8635 they can target jet engines on idle. After all the seeker head is not very much different to an TV/IR air-to-ground missile. Since the nearby mirage was preparing to go it would be putting out enough heat for the seeker to discern it from the ground clutter.
