thanks for the info. i've looked into it more, and it seems like bedrock is still very closed off but not QUITE as closed off as i thought. - banning reverse engineered mods is still not great - those sites don't work on consoles, but tbf there's not much you can do about that - a lot of map creators still do prefer java, and point stands on how they were trying to convert creators to bedrock overall my point stands but i might choose to word it less harshly if i could go back and change it

I've been smelling the stench of marketplace since the day I returned to Minecraft after ten years, but have to play on a tablet, instead of a PC. And I'm devastated to hear creative projects are now gate kept. Most of the recent additions to the game wouldn't have happened without the creative influence of modders, map makers, etc. Hell, they even named a mob after Vechs! Hermitcraft just announced their new game is free on Java, but in marketplace for bedrock. Bill Gates buys all the farmland and I can't afford to craft bread! Eat the rich.

3:02 Correction, the change prevents any client modding, which was never part of the marketplace offerings or never will be. The players can, thankfully, still download addons made by the community and use them in a vanilla client without any modifications or extra steps. Source: I make marketplace addons for a living. I know it's all bad and everything, capitalism and such, absolutely, but it also prevents me from going hungry and work at a job while doing stuff that i enjoy (play minecraft and code), and just like me there are thousands of people whose jobs and livelyhood rely on the marketplace. I think the problem is that Microsoft/Mojang feels entitled to the work of modders for using their engine, and your solution does little to address this. Mods don't include Minecraft's original code, so their creators should be fully entitled to sell or freely distribute their work. I strongly disagree with Mojang moderating their own mod community as it allows for infinite abuse of power. Demand in and of itself is regulatory.

fair point. i think the community could regulate itself pretty well, but it's also a very drastic shift to allow everyone to monetize all at once and there'd be a ton of growing pains maybe a way to roll it out slowly, but eventually leave it as an open self-regulating system?

12:52 I feel a small need to note here that people buying plugins for servers are much more likely to count as "commercial" users, where the threat of actually getting sued for piracy is much higher than someone pirating software or games for personal usage. That's why even though it's possible to pirate server plugins, many servers are likely to get them legally instead of risking an actual lawsuit. They're more comparable to things like windows or office. Both of those are relatively easy to pirate, but most companies are probably still unwilling to risk pirating them.

13:46 I think the problem with the Bedrock Marketplace is that Microsoft doesn't actually check what people upload if it's copyrighted. Pretty sure somewhere it states that if you upload it, it's ASSUMED that you got permission, so they can avoid any legal trouble or checking. Plus many people or copyright owners don't care enough to deal with it.

You would be surprised, that once you start make mod people actually care about, people will start asking "where is donation link", I know it first hand. it's not full time job kinds of money, but it's also not only 50$ over the lifetime of the project. Paid mods go against what mods should be IMO, possibility of that creates a possibility for bad actors that profit from ideas someone made free for all. Faithful drama was loud example of that actually steeling, but every time I decide to check the marketplace it's like if I'm watching java mods from 10 years ago but with modern clickbait thumbnails and 5$ price tag, technically different, but nothing new.

12:29 yup. As a plugin developer myself.. the only premium plugin I've put on the marketplace sits at $5, barely any purchases. My next, much BIGGER project, is just gonna be free and open source, with maybe a patreon or other way to donate if people want. Purely because I don't want to deal with anyone trying to refund or leak the code. If it's free and open source, why would anyone leak it, or why would anyone download it elsewhere? Plus, when open source, it's good for a portfolio, and allows other people to help out by contributing.

8:16 - What if Java is that? Like from the point of view of a shareholder Minecraft Java and Bedrock aren’t different, it’s just Minecraft. So Bedrock is the solution to keeping the two visions of the game in tact and allowing creators to “flourish”. Bedrock gets crossplay, incentives for creators, and the bad marketing practises. Then Java keeps it’s community, it’s free modding space and essentially eyes off it to allow this smaller and more tightly- knit community. In an ideal world mod and map creators would have more ways to profit from there creation, but would could also get a much worse alternative.

Paid Mods are a thing that most people despise. Look at Bethesda's Creation Club for example, and the whole fiasco with Steam cancelling paid mods. Plus, Java lets people mod... FOR FREE, so why should I pay for them for the Bedrock version? Also a large chunk of the Marketplace assets are STOLEN because people want to make a quick buck with little to no way of properly moderating it. Corporations do not care about the bad actors when they get a cut of that money. The best solution is removing the Marketplace altogether.

marketplace creator here!! your solution sounds great but yes, is very idealistic. a big problem w/ the current marketplace is the AMOUNT of content that gets published. youre right when you discussed the heaps of low quality items. their review system takes MONTHS to get through because theres just so much content. that's probably a reason why there isn't a java marketplace as well- they just dont dedicate enough staff/time into review and that would double the already-long wait times- never mind taking the time to review and approve non marketplace mods! that's why they've cracked down more recently on who can actually publish, and force creators to partner with 3rd parties rather than get approved as a direct creator themselves (so the knowledgable 3rd parties can do the review work for them before any content gets submitted to Microsoft for the final approval). all this is from a skin creator's perspective btw :)

I dont know where he got the "roblox takes 75%" from. I work with roblox game developement and they usually take 30% with exeption of selling external gamepasses in a game, in which case the 30% cut goes to the creator of the experience.

If I were Microsoft, I'd make everyone do a one time 20-40 dollar payment to access that 'Mods' page on the Java main menu, and leave it at that. Then, allow people to charge for mods if they really want to. Ideally, this should NEVER happen, but hypothetically, it isn't too far out there. Also, sorry guys if I just gave Microsoft any ideas.

When did Minecraft become $30? I got mine for $15 & the Bedrock edition was free if I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10. Hats off to Microsoft's "terribly performing CEO." Those were the days when most people still respected Microsoft. I heard a rumor on Reddit that Notch & Jeb forced a clause when they sold Mojang that Microsoft could not shut down Java ever. Cannot back this up though.
